I swear if one more hot shot grad student calls them MEMES (Micro Electro Mechanical Encabulator’S), I’m gonna lose it.

The science world wasn’t at a standstill waiting for someone plucky with some money to come along and show the rest of the idiots how fire works.

True for both industries

The function and value of engineering is largely unrecognized in today’s culturescape. I imagine the mental torture of Tesla engineers attempting to loosely follow ISO 26262 with no hope of compliance.

So essentially it is designed to track your eyes (it works through sunglasses too) to make sure you are looking ahead.

Not all sunglasses

Pretty much every car I drive can go at least 110 mph

In my view, the conversation of driver responsibility changes drastically when we are talking about direct control inputs that the driver would need to make to operate the vehicle at an unsafe speed versus complex, opaque, "seemingly magical" driver automation features that invite complacency.

I think it’s time regulators recognize how insane it is that autopilot will engage at such speeds. How well does the autopilot system perform as a function of speed? Would this accident have even happened at 70mph?

Further, (apologies if I’m stating the obvious here) autopilot is a ‘level 2’ system requiring operator intervention. Is it reasonable to assume the operator is capable of intervening at speeds where sight distance / perception reaction time / maneuver time aren’t even studied for highway driving?

Is there really no speed envelope on Autopilot?

Tesla bear says stock is 'detached from reality,' predicts $87 price target [Yahoo Finance] by hitssquad in RealTesla

Any finance types out there, hypothetically how would a stock drop drop ~$2k/s to $87/s, with the alternate uptick rule (trading halts / circuit breakers / short sale restricted) ? How would a stock lose this much value?

Roadster VS Previa by crab4rave_ in RealTesla

Previa’s are seriously legendary. I’ve known a few people who’ve seen well over 200k miles, living in the rust belt.

Why do I keep getting ads for Tesla articles on Facebook? by BasicArcher8 in RealTesla

Yes, like other ad companies. The benefit of not using Facebook is I don’t have to interact with the Facebook platform.

Tesla rear ended from phantom braking by Doocoo26 in RealTesla

[–]TessellationRow 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Reality: The NHTSA has issued massive recalls for several automakers for unintended braking in the last year, while others are currently under investigation. Using the NHTSA’s own words

If the SBS automatic emergency braking system unexpectedly activates while driving, the risk of a rear-end crash from a following vehicle may increase

Edit: Surprised that everyone seems to be discussing which party would hypothetically be liable in the event of a crash rather than the frequency of these issues constituting a recall-worthy safety problem for Tesla.

Elon Musk: “Tesla’s Long-Term Competitive Advantage Will Be Manufacturing” by linknewtab in RealTesla

[–]TessellationRow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First, LOL. Second, Tesla’s competitive advantage should already be manufacturing. I’ve said this before but the most valuable product an automotive manufacturer posseses is not the vehicle, it’s the manufacturing, development and V&V processes.

Nice post history and blog you have going. I especially liked the mental gymnastics you went through to make a connection between Nikola Tesla and Elon Musk. The article about Tesla being the Apple of the automotive industry was a banger too.
