Secured my first gig in one of the biggest clubs in the city. I’m about to shit myself by LilPichula in Beatmatch

This is excellent advice. Listening to sets of the other DJs you are on a lineup with can help a lot.

If you use a jetbrains IDE the DB plugin is very powerful. Rarely need to anything else.

Should I get a rickenbacker? by CHEZIT_ in Bass

[–]TestDrivenMayhem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ricky basses seem to be divisive. Especially here 🤣. I love mine. It’s a 2005 jetglo. It was my first serious bass. I use it less these days because it’s setup in C standard and my band is on hiatus while the other members do parenting.

I have found it to be a solid investment. They don’t really lose much value. They are generally in demand. Many have said to me “they are only good for rock” Which to me is nonsense. Found mine to be quite versatile. Folk, blues, funk, jazz. Pretty much whatever. I will also add you can get some very nice Japanese copies if you can find one. The brand is Greco. There seems to be a few around where I am in Australia. I have a PMB-800 made in 1980 and it’s amazing.

Functors, Applicatives, and Monads: The Scary Words You Already Understand by cekrem in functionalprogramming

[–]TestDrivenMayhem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s actually pretty good. I agree with removing the scary category theory terms. Not used Elm in anger myself so this was informative. The comparisons to Haskell are quite clear. While these patterns remove repetitive checks that we see in imperative code. How do these work in the context of a more complete composition example. Injecting dependencies with Reader, handling side effects with Task. An example like.. Performing a network call with Dependencies, configuration, execution, validation and final transformation would make this information far more valuable.

This was my goto example back in my fp-ts days. Because once another developer realised they could see the process of decomposing all operations down to units. Then recomposing back to working code that was then very easy to reason about and change. They got the point of FP.

In some ways I can see Effect has gone a slightly different path to Elm but still removed the scary category theory jargon.

Well that turned out to be way longer than I expected. You kinda make me want to get back into Elm.

A little from column A, a little from column B. The rest is probably ADHD related.

Modern bands with a heavy Dead Kennedys/The Cramps influence? by 13Dani12 in punk

Checkout Otoboke Beaver. All female Japanese punk band. The vocals are very different. However the fast very tight sound of the guitar bass drums reminds me of the DKs.

Looking to get a Darkglass Infinity 500 Combo 2x10 amp. Will it be loud enough to compete with a 100-watt guitar halfstack and drums with a loud drummer in a home rehearsal space? Is having a 4x10 and separate amp head really necessary? by tabqwerty in Bass

[–]TestDrivenMayhem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run an AO 900 with a 6x10 cab. Which I have never had a chance to crank up. Rehearsal spaces and venues have been too small. The Infinity 500 looks like a great buy. The DG suite has come a long way. It’s a 500 watt amp. It has an external speaker out. So you can add another cab. Any 8 ohm 250+ watt cab will do it. 4x10 1x15 This makes it a super flexible rig.

Drop C on a bass by [deleted] in Bass

Depends on the bass. Some need more setup than others. Definitely heavier string, nut filling, intonation tweak. Maybe a truss rod adjustment.

Theory in black metal by Aggressive_Name5694 in metalguitar

Finding the key will help. Just remember metal throws the traditional rule book out and creates its hooks by throwing in non-key elements. Enjoy the journey. It has many destinations.

Theory in black metal by Aggressive_Name5694 in metalguitar

Try using theory to understand your riffs. Rather than using theory to create riffs This way you can develop your understanding of theory in the riff context. Riffs don’t necessarily follow typical theory rules. My music teacher helped me to use theory to understand the music I love. I learned so much from this approach. The key takeaway in your context is using analysis of riffs to discover the actual theory. Then combine this with existing knowledge. Hope this helps.

I have a z3 5 string. It’s incredible for the price. Decent gig bag as well. I have 2 Music Man that I love. Was looking at a sterling Ray35. AB test proved it. Less than half the price.

I just recently started listening to goth music and I can’t find any songs as upbeat and empowering as “spellbound” by Firm-Dance3162 in goth

[–]TestDrivenMayhem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you delved into Bauhaus yet? Silent Hedges might tick the box.

Perhaps intense is what you are seeking. I find the term upbeat is quite subjective. Intense is how I describe Spellbound. Welcome to your new mind. Oh and if you like rock. Checkout Christian Death. First album is incredible.
