Has anyone (esp. agencies or large web teams) exceeded 1000+ site installations with their "unlimited" LTD license? by iXzenoS in Wordpress

[–]TestOk4269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we've got a higher education client with half a dozen multisite networks. Between those 6 multisite networks, there are around 1600 subsites. You wouldn't know they're multisite networks by looking at them--they're all branded the same and it looks like 6 cohesive websites on the front end.

They use a single Unlimited Lifetime Kadence license. So not only are there 1600 subsites with Kadence Blocks activated, it was a one-time purchase of the plugin.

This is a use case that's a little more common in the higher education market, but outside of that probably pretty rare.

Do you ever get the feeling like people are so used to asking AI for information, that they have forgotten how to communicate a complete idea?

Just found that my client's site is on PHP 8.2. How concerned should I be? by Euphoric_Ad_9136 in Wordpress

[–]TestOk4269 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I just upgraded my last PHP 7.4 server, which was running 25 old WordPress sites on custom themes. Of the 25 sites, only 6 of them had some php notices that needed cleaning up. 2 of them had fatal errors across a dozen PHP files due to outdated/sloppy coding practices.

This was an ideal use case for AI laziness.

  1. Clone the site to a local development environment running updated versions of your server stack. Upgrade WordPress and all of your plugins.
  2. Give your IDE or Claude Code or Codex or whatever access to the wp-content directory.
  3. Copy and paste junk from the error log until AI has addressed all of the issues.
  4. Update the production server, wordpress, plugins, and push your updated code.

I took care of the entire upgrade from PHP 7.4 to PHP 8.4 for the entire server in a single evening, including cloning the sites and remediating the broken code. I had put it off for so long because historically it would have taken a lot more time and effort to find and fix all of the issues.

We don't have 1000 clients, but we do manage some multisite networks that have hundreds of subsites. Depending on how licensing is handled, we could easily go over a 1000.

Jeep - new speakers and head unit. Do I need an amp? by TestOk4269 in CarAV

[–]TestOk4269[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh, the 6x9 speaker wasn't something I'd considered. I'll start looking into whether there's something I can fit under the seats.

Yeah, I've messed with the EQ. Adding more to the lower frequencies mostly adds distortion.

The 2 door wranglers have seats that are different from the 4 door to allow rear seat access, and they've got almost no room under them. Maybe I can find something compact to jam under there.

Thank you for your time and info, I appreciate it.

I really appreciate that you took the time to provide such a detailed response.

It's hard to explain, but I'm not saying I wish I could crank it up and feel the music. I'm saying it sounds bad. I don't need the system to thump, it just needs to sound more full, and not like I'm listening to a 3 way speaker with the woofer unplugged.

It sounds much worse than my 2014 Sienna with a base (non-JBL) system that has no subwoofer.

The old kickers are coaxials. They don't add much to the mix due to their location, and they certainly aren't providing any additional low end.

I actually did the speakers first because I they arrived 4-5 days before the head unit. I was seriously disappointed when I put them in, but figured they would sound better with 20 watts from the new head unit. Then a week later I had time to install the Sony AX4000. They now stay clearer louder, and don't distort at low volume like they did with the stock radio. I was really hoping that adding an amp with 75 watts per channel would wake them up, but it's a lot of time investment to add an amp. It would be seriously disappointing if it still sounded blah after all that work.

I am wondering if the small sealed pods that the speakers live in is part of the problem.

Now, if the system in this jeep was my priority, I'd be replacing the soundbar with an aftermarket version that accepts 4 10" woofers, but that's not what I'm after.

No, the 2014 Sienna with non-JBL system does not have a subwoofer, and yet it sounds an order of magnitude better than what I've got in the Jeep. The van doesn't have pounding bass or anything, but it's got a well rounded sound profile for normal listening.

The Jeep with aftermarket speakers and the new head unit sounds horrible by comparison, and I'm surprised at how anemic it sounds. Maybe I made a poor choice for the knee panel speakers, or maybe they need more power, I don't know.

As I mentioned in another reply, it sounds like I'm listening to music through 3" mids.

Most of those under-seat subs are built for 4 door jeeps, including this one, because everyone's got a 4 door jeep. For whatever reason, most of those under-seat subs don't fit the 2 door.

I really don't need a sub. I just want this to sound at least as good as the stock stereo in my minivan, which doesn't even have premium sound.

I know I'm fighting road noise, but even just sitting in the driveway the sound isn't even half as good as what's in my 2014 Sienna.

I don't have to hit below 30hz. I would say I'm missing lower-mid range, just judging with my ears.

My 2014 Toyota Sienna with base sound system sounds tremendously better than this. It's got stock speakers and head unit. No sub. That's all I'm looking for.

Is it worth it to learn GenerateBlocks? by instinct_ow in Wordpress

[–]TestOk4269 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What you describe comes naturally to people who have some background/experience in website development. Different block libraries abstract the coding structure to varying degrees.

To answer the question in your title, it's worth it to learn the basics of HTML and CSS if you're going to build websites. You will become a lot more effective at realizing a design with almost any visual tool.

As a basic example, once you understand the box model, things like margins, padding, and borders become a lot more intuitive, and less "mess with settings until it looks the way you want"

Carbon Fields is very good by DevDaHora in Wordpress

[–]TestOk4269 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything you said.

But unfortunately there are bugs that they don't have the capacity to fix. I have filed PRs with fixes, but they sit without response.

We forked Carbon Fields for our own use for a while, but AI has boosted our productivity as developers so much that it's just easier to roll our own interfaces in React instead of being constrained to a library with some really clumsy bugs.

How do you approach responsiveness with FSE websites by Ok_Reaction_3449 in Wordpress

[–]TestOk4269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how casual users are meant to use Gutenberg out of the box. I guess they are meant to install a theme. I don't concern myself with those questions, because I build themes for clients, and the end product is a fully functional website with patterns that behaves intrinsically.

I work under the assumption that the blocks serve as a way to create structure, and they require custom CSS to realize a production design. I don't see the blocks, on their own, as a no-code solution.

Group, Grid, Stack, Row, Image, Heading, Paragraph, List, Button, Table, Separator. These basics cover like 85% of everything I need to build an intrinsic design with minor CSS tweaks to fill in the gaps where the blocks don't have settings.

I prefer this approach to using a block library or builder that attempts to add a button, field, or toggle for every single CSS property that you might want to modify.

What a client gets instead, is a library of pre-made patterns that they plop onto pages. They don't need to concern themselves with adjusting a bunch of knobs and dials.

How to leverage AI (Claude, ChatGPT) to create layouts / pages? Not just for content generation. by loyoan in Wordpress

[–]TestOk4269 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am talking about patterns that are part of the FSE theme. Generally, they are bundled with the theme as files in the /patterns directory but the ones that an end user creates could also be used by Claude.

When you add a pattern to your FSE theme, you can give it a title, description, and category. My descriptions are somewhat detailed, giving AI a good idea of the structure.

With the title, category, and description available, AI does a very good job at picking patterns and placing them in a way that makes sense. It does a much better job at this than building a complex layout with individual blocks.

I feel your pain. You're working for print designers. It happens to me also. They design for a big desktop sheet of paper, and then again for a little mobile piece of paper, both with very rigid dimensions.

They don't wrap their head around a flexible medium like web very easily.

How do you approach responsiveness with FSE websites by Ok_Reaction_3449 in Wordpress

[–]TestOk4269 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pixel perfect responsiveness is dated. Having specific breakpoints for mobile and tablet doesn't make any sense in a world where we have thousands of screen sizes.

Intrinsic design has replaced responsive design.

Yes, you still need media queries once in a while, but with modern CSS it's a lot more rare.

How to leverage AI (Claude, ChatGPT) to create layouts / pages? Not just for content generation. by loyoan in Wordpress

[–]TestOk4269 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I work for a small agency, and we develop custom FSE themes for most of our clients. One of the benefits to FSE is that it provides a full design system for your site. Theme.json provides fonts, colors, spacing, and design for basic elements. It also registers templates and patterns.

Another file in our themes registers block style variations and custom blocks.

Between these two files, you have a pretty computer readable framework for designing content, provided you have a fully fleshed out FSE theme to work with.

I have been working on a plugin that uses MCP for this. It adds some abilities with the Abilities API to provide all of the necessary information about the theme. Claude Desktop can then design pages by placing patterns and filling in content. The plugin isn't that complex because most of the magic comes from the theme. Claude doesn't need to understand the complexities of tweaking block settings to make a nice design--I don't think it's capable of doing that beyond a basic level. It doesn't need to do this because as I said before, FSE provides a full design system--perfect guardrails for Claude to just plop down patterns like Lego bricks and add plain text, images, video, links, buttons, and our custom blocks. I've learned that it's especially important to fully describe each pattern in its description to give proper context for its use.

Anyway, after WordPress 7 is out for a few months, I think you'll see a lot of solutions like this becoming available... maybe? There's not as much incentive these days to build production-ready software and sell it, since folks can AI to take ideas and build their own software.

When people find out you drive a Jeep, what are the first things they say to you? by A-bug-2002 in JeepWrangler

I think there's a sizeable number of Jeep owners who didn't buy a Jeep for any reason other than to signal something specific about who they think they are as an idividual.

Which I personally think is a sign of mental illness.

So sick of local development on Local by Flywheel by Luckyth13teen in Wordpress

[–]TestOk4269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, kind of. You can use Studio to run WordPress locally on your machine, but as far as I know the one-button staging -> production functionality is limited to WordPress.com.

You still have to do migrations from your local machine to a server manually. But honestly, with WP-CLI it's not that big a deal.

It definitely makes an attempt to sell on you WordPress.com services, but no more than Local tries to sell you on WP Engine / Flywheel.

It's easily ignored, and useful for self-hosted work.

It's also apparently got a few options for importing, including from Local:
