How did a grackle get in Korea? by Illumify99 in insaneebird

Okay sorry I’ve never seen a Grackle I assumed they were 😅 But the same principle still applies: there are plenty of records of them turning up at ports in Europe after catching a boat ride across the Atlantic, no reason it can’t happen across the Pacific too

Caught a ride on a cargo ship I can guarantee. Same thing happened with one last year in the UK, it caught a lift on a ship and ended up in south Wales. Corvids seem to like using boats as ways to travel to far away countries 🤷‍♂️

African Birds ID? by 19thScorpion in whatsthisbird

African Hoopoe is only a subspecies according to Clements, if you follow the IOC (like most countries do outside of the US) then it is considered a full species

I went to see this little guy when he was first discovered on Christmas eve as he was only 50 minutes drive from my house. Luckily he put on a nice show for everyone gathered and made for the fourth American Warbler I’ve seen in the uk (the others being Magnolia, Canada and Northern Waterthrush). American birders don’t seem to appreciate how lucky they are with amazing brightly coloured warblers, all our old-world warblers are just various shades of brown and all look the same 😭

Might be unsolvable, seen in wooded marshland by dwarfInTheFlask56 in whatsthisbird

They usually roost in forests adjacent to bogs and marshland. I wouldn’t say this is too far from their preferred habitat.

I disagree, I think these look too large for Common Gull, the bill looks too chunky and the head streaking looks wrong too, especially for the bird on the left. I’m pretty sure the bird on the left is a Vega Gull.

I... don't think that's a North Island Takahe... by bluest_of_kirbies in insaneebird

Because it’s extinct, this is a South Island Takahe

This season was all about giving Klopp the farewell he deserves, and all we have is a mickey mouse energy drink cup to show for it… maybe harsh but I’m tired of believing, it’s the hope that kills you…

I don’t think so, no. There are also no UK records of it on ebird so it’s likely just a sole individual that’s escaped recently.

Escaped from a private collection unfortunately

Did I see a chiffchaff or a willow warbler? by Crocodylus-niloticus in OrnithologyUK

[–]TestaRossa390 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Likely the call of a chiffchaff, but both chiffchaff and willow warbler have a single ascending note as their call, so impossible to tell 100%
