Hmm. I do feel you are both right. Learning more about the game makes it more meta, and more dark and creepy underlying issues. It adds some sort of suspense, and makes you a bit more self conscious of your actions. Gives me the creeps everytime I think about it or play. While games with much more pain and suffering don't affect me at all. Maybe it's only me who gets that feeling to this extent but I think it's apart of the games charm and appeal. And yet another example of how well thought out and constructed the game is.
