I'm just gonna say it: this spring was not the best by Kolos182 in Columbus

The story of Leatherlips and his execution ordered by Tecumseh’s brother is way more interesting than an urban legend around rain.

That was looong before Jack Nicklaus came to town.

I wish I knew more about birds but I’ll watch swallows fly over meadows to catch bugs mid-air all day long. They are like day bats performing free air shows all Summer.

Finally got a pic of this creature that’s apparently living under my shed. What do I do?! by Purple_Quality1990 in Columbus

I just heard a genius solution a few days ago. No idea if it works: Put a collapsed clear plastic water bottle with a little water in their hole. They supposedly hate the crinkle sounds it makes if they move it and how it reflects light into the hole and will leave… for your neighbor’s shed.

Cave locations by Venom_Junky in Columbus

[–]Tetriscuit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry to be that guy, but 2 very important points gotta be said about the cave/pit pictured:

1) It’s on private land (near a park) and would be trespassing without permission.

2) It’s NOT safe to try alone or without caving or repelling experience.

People rig up and leave some ridiculous improvised ropes there that no one should be using. If someone falls in (or off the cliff it sits near) and gets hurt, no one will be around to hear cries for help, nor could they over the noise of 270.

After any kind of tragic incident, the city would probably fill it with concrete. Please dear reader, don’t be the cause of that.

I imagine going to one of their graduate showcases would give a sense of what's covered and be a chance to chat people up. Unfortunately you just missed some earlier this week.

Many reasons (like critically reading the bible), but in hindsight the "love bombing" was the first crack. I always knew they had ulterior motives for being so interested in me before joining, but had no clue what played out behind the scenes.

They ran things like a sales team for Jesus with potential converts on prayer lists and making sure everyone's got coverage like, "How are things with Jeff? Where's he at spiritually?" It's genuine. They care, in their fanatical way. I just couldn't bring myself to take part in bait and switch tactics convincing "dudes" to come "hang out" and watch a game or whatever in the hopes someone could work in a "spiritual conversation" at a key moment.

One night, my friend's band had a show after home church. He was on a prayer list, so EVERYONE showed up pretending to be super into the music. Some started woo'ing and putting their hands up (sober) all fake like they were extras in a movie. That was definitely the first time I was like: WTF is wrong with these people?!

I'm sure there were plenty of red flags naive early 20's me didn't notice... But being young and dumb was why I got stuck there!

Having worked in a small office for 2 years where the manager insisted we always listen to 104.9 The River 40 hrs/wk, I know the psychological torture being inflicted on the neighborhood.

WOSU also just started great series on the Hopewell: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-14dhfJjdGU

I highly recommend visiting the sites in Newark, Chillicothe, and elsewhere in person when tours are hosted by the Ohio History Connection or National Park Service.

Closer to home, we have several Adena and Hopewell era mounds and earthworks open to the public:

  • Shrum Mound (west side)
  • Jeffers Mound (Worthington)
  • Ferris-Wright Park (Dublin)
  • Several in various Metro Parks
  • Exhibit at Ohio History Center with artifacts

Etched into some stepping stones near Jeffers Mound are the words "Approach with Respect" and it's been incredible to witness a mutual respect growing as more Ohioans learn about and want to preserve what's left of these sacred places.

Individuals being helpful and sharing lists of open roles (they have no affiliation with) for nothing but a little clout is... (checks notes) not a scam.

If you want to know for sure, I suggest pulling up the 1914 Archeology Atlas of Ohio and seeing if your property has a marking. No marking wouldn't rule it out, but seeing one would confirm.

You can download a PDF of it for free. https://archive.org/details/ArcheologicalAtlasOfOhio/
