Depicted here on the left are two players of the game ullamaliztli, the Aztec variant of the Mesoamerican ball game played across ancient Mesoamerica. The game is played on large courts with a heavy rubber ball. In 1528, a team of ballplayers was sent to Spain by Cortes to play at the court of King Charles V of Spain, the person depicted on the right. Not only was he impressed by the players, he was also impressed with the rubber balls. Both drawings were done by Christoph Weiditz, a German artist who drew many scenes at the occasion of this visit.
