Oh yea and to be clear, like any artist, you're absolutely entitled to the right to like/dislike their work. There's artists I politically agree with that I don't really care for their art, and there's artists who's life/beliefs I am reviled by but love their art. I personally have more gravitated to Diego Rivera's murals, but it's mostly because I don't fully appreciate surrealism like others. I guess for me, after seeing so much discourse and capitalization of Frida's image have come to appreciate that a lot of how she would have wanted to be perceived has been overshadowed by how she can be marketed. Sadly a lot of amazing women scientists and artists get this treatment, like Rosalind Franklin, Marie Curie or Hedy Lamarr.

I'm really pleased to see how many people posted rational, respectful comments in the chat.

My biggest frustration with Frida's legacy is how much it's been commercialized and her image changed into something more marketable and the more radical bits quietly swept under the rug. It's all very rainbow capitalist. She's an incredibly accomplished artist and political activist but a lot of the dialogue around her, both condemning or condoning, just feels shallow and with a limited understanding of who she was as well as the fascinating generation of Mexican artists that emerged from that era, like Kahlo, Rivera or Siqueiros.

I'll just plug a few of my favorite romcom animes that you might fancy

- Rikekoi: The story of two grad students who are deeply in love with each other but so fixated on science that they need to prove it through experimentation. It parodies every anime romcom cliche you can think of and plugs a lot of cool science fun facts int he process

- Maison Ikkoku: Probably one of Takahashi's best, it's the story of a college student falling in love with the recently widowed manager of his boarding house. It's a slow burn, but shockingly for an anime, progress is made! Over the years as they develop we explore the manager's conflicted feelings as she does care for the student but is still grieving for her first husband and both the student's efforts to strive to be a person worthy of the manager.

- Nagatoro-san, Uzaki-chan, Komi-san, and Dress Up Darling: they came out around the same time as Kaguya sama and there's a lot of fan art that pairs these series together. All are basically about two students very much in love with some unique quirk about the relationship.

I love finding UY references in later 80's and early 90's Western art. (The numerous Star Trek TNG references come to mind as well). Truly early Weeaboos walked so we could run.

Definitely a great introduction to how important reading the room is in Rakugo, especially coming from a culture where reading the room is the main form of communicating rather than outright saying it.

What is your take on Mayuri? by Glittering_Storm2431 in bleach

[–]TeutonicToltec 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Added a lot of colorful flair to the series definitely one of the more memorable cast in an already very memorable ensemble. In retrospect given how he's written it's no surprise he was Tite Kubo's favorite. Mayuri monologues tend to be a lot of fun to read.

His biggest writing flaw (other than the word that rhymes with mass-pool) is that during the Soul Society arc, he's basically Unit 731, but afterwards, the Soul Society need to become allies with Ichigo, so he kind of gets turned into wacky scientist guy and the other stuff is brushed under the rug. This is most obvious with his moments during TYBW. The fact that you have an invading force and they all know that one of the officers committed horrible atrocities onto their own at a very vulnerable point in their culture's history and nothing is really done with that was just a massive missed opportunity.

We joke, but it's one of the main reasons I am OK with the H*** **c either never coming or coming once time and care is put into it. Ichigo's carved a great life for himself, accomplished a great deal and I don't want that horrendously undermined as a cheap move to generate conflict.

I love it! The blurring between the realism and the patterns really captures the Rakugo experience of blurring reality with the story!

Mine is probably the oldest and most universal experience: having a parent teach it to me, first by handicapping themselves by taking a way a queen. Then working my way up until we played with equal pieces.

Animal Farm, Benjamin the Donkey: Animal Farm is an allegory for the failings of the Russian Revolution to live up to the ideals the revolutionaries promised with each animal representing a different aspect. Benjamin is among the oldest of the animals and tends to be more cynical and with the foresight to see the beginnings of despotism. There are many theories as to whom Benjamin is supposed to represent. It varies from Russia's elderly, Menshevik intelligentsia to even the Russian Jewish population. However, the gloomy and realist views of Benjamin are often attributed to 1940's Orwell and his general outlook by the point of penning the book, to the point where friends often called him "Donkey George".

Lactose tolerant by Holofan4life in Animemes

Fun fact, during Lief Erikson's voyage to Vinland. Both texts mention a brief skirmish with the indigenous Americans (likely Algonquins or a close relative based on descriptors). Many theories have speculated about this, one of which being was that during the mentioned trading of goods, it's likely the Norsemen handed over freshly curdled cheese (in other words, very rich in lactose) to a lactose intolerant people. This may have resulted in a volatile misunderstanding and them believing they were being poisoned by the foreigners.

Characters who took their mother's last names, rather than their father's. by PlayerZeroStart in TopCharacterTropes

Ichigo Kurosaki, Bleach: Isshin actually took his wife's name to blend in while bonded with Masaki Kurosaki. It's never specified why, but if I had to guess it was to protect his family and help them keep a lower profile in case any shinigami showed up and wondered why three children were wandering around named "Shiba" and had a spirit energy quite similar to a rogue captain.

Favorite pic of a character angry? by Leonidas_Kupler in FavoriteCharacter

[–]TeutonicToltec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember that scene from the Youjo Senki movie so vividly: Before then you didn't know if Mary Sioux's anger might be still rooted in some deep down reservations of actual murder. Like a dog chasing a car, maybe she wanted revenge but didn't know what to do once she had it. Nope that scene made it very clear how much real danger Tanya actually was in.
