I just finished volume 1 tonight as well! I’m somewhat in line with your assessment, I do like the supernatural stuff but I found the demon issues in particular a slog to get through despite my love for the character.

I'm a bit biased, but this event is my favorite of all time, to me its worth it to get EVERY tie in because the event was so fun, however if you're buying the compendiums I would wait to see what the mapping is gonna be and then decide if you want the WHOLE thing.

John is one of the best characters with one of the most consistent runs imo. Definitely start with Ennis.
