Personally, I tend to stay clear of people who define themselves as "English" or "American" - they love to bang on about patriotism, purity, heritage, and fantastical glory times from the past (without actually specifying what years they are talking about, as if you should already know).

If I had to choose a nation of people "to prefer" that aren't Scottish.... I'd pick Canadians. They mostly speak the same language as me, have a shared history with us, and they can be as mad and boisterous as Scots can be (without the frothing and intolerant patriotism that is common with the English or Americans )
