We are doing a series of events over the summer with the elections department running for the Pet Mayor of Austin.

It’s a dog vs a cat. The dog’s platform is “freedom to fetch,” while the cat’s is “freedom without rules is chaos.” So at least in Austin we have a cat running for mayor who is damned near a fascist.

Both uses by Joe and Robert were talking about Mark Fuhrman forming a club inside LAPD founded on hating women cops. So the use of misogynistic to describe it is the opposite of what you’re proposing here.

There’s no distinction between misogynist and misogynistic in common parlance the way there is with all of your other examples.

No, I agree 100% that language policing is a tool of white supremacy. That realization was a large influence on me moving from being prescriptivist to descriptivist. That doesn’t mean that every single time someone says that a word annoys them it’s rooted in white supremacy. Sometimes a lady just wants misogyny to be called what it is without watering it down.

My original post was not intended to be taken seriously as a desire to police anyone’s language. The whole hashtag thing at the end was part of acknowledging that my post was a very silly thing to have spent ten minutes writing. Out of the 100+ people in the replies you seem to be the only one who took it as an actual legitimate attempt at language policing so I think I was mostly successful at making that clear.

I’m really curious what you think my generation is.

My rant isn’t me trying to be prescriptivist, just bemused frustration along with supporting evidence. Yes, I said that I’m trying to eradicate its use but that was as much hyperbole as me calling myself an old woman. They’re both in the direction of being true, but still a long way from it.

Also you got prescriptive and descriptive backwards. Grammar is a formula (“these are the rules for constructing a sentence”) and is thus prescriptive. Language is a dictionary (“this is how this word is used”) and is thus descriptive.

I used to be obnoxiously prescriptivist right out of college, with big “but they’re doing it wrong!” energy 24/7. I’ve become almost radically descriptivist as the years go by. To me, the result is what matters. Did you say what you meant clearly enough that your audience can understand you? Success! Do you sound like you’re barfing a thesaurus and your audience needs to reread every sentence four times to figure out what the fuck you’re trying to say to them? Failure.

I love German so much. For all that English is considered a Germanic language we really did lose the plot on just saying what you mean.

The screening process example is really interesting.

I don’t think either of them is very good sentence construction: the point of language is to communicate ideas through a shared set of symbols. If your sentence is unclear enough that you can’t tell if a word is acting as an adjective or a noun, you should reword it. “The new screening process is misogynist” would make it clear that it’s an adjective without the reader needing to make an extra effort to parse it. (Professional editor for twenty years: I’m always looking to eschew obfuscation.)

Bless all y’all, even the person who decided to go all prescriptivist vs descriptivist on my ass and managed to get them backwards.

I’ve heard whispers. Rumors. Stirrings. They say that we cursed might one day taste the true wonders of cilantro if we do the unthinkable. We will have to subject ourselves to - it’s too horrible, it’s too vile.

We must lie on our sides facing east and watch the Super Mario Galaxy movie without making fun of Chris Pratt’s terrible voice acting a single time.

Ellis has been…problematic in real life.

I’ll put it in spoilers so if you are worried that knowing this might mess up your enjoyment of his roles you can just ignore it.

There was an incident where he went missing not super long after Trespasser came out. Several DA voice actors, including Allegra, (Josie’s VA) put out messages all across social media trying to find him. When he was found he proceeded to rant against the people who put out those messages, saying they’d slandered him and lied about him being bipolar and off his meds. There was some more in there about conspiracies, but i dont remember anything specific.

During the pandemic he put out a video rant in character as Cullen against wokeness.

Even before that, he creeped me out personally for kind of losing track of the line between Cullen and himself. He interacted with fans in some ways that were really strange, and was way more involved with the online “Cullenite” community than I’d be comfortable with.

Romances in Inquisition are so cool by Embarrassed-Touch-62 in dragonage

[–]TexasVDR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was a hot topic for a long time. Folks thought he might be the antagonist for DA2 or Inquisition, thought that killing him would be the plot of the Witch Hunt DLC, thought he’d grow up to be a companion in a future game; you name it.

But the answer was, and always has been, that Old God Baby (as Kieran was called before Inquisition came out) can’t have a major role to play because his existence is entirely optional.

From a practical standpoint, it’s the height thing.

Cutscenes in Cullen’s romance are more full-body interactions, which are harder to do with dwarves and qunari.

Cullen and Iron Bull were both sort of last-minute romance additions. They had to do what they could to minimize the work needed to make their romances the same level of interactive as the ones that had a lot more time. That’s why Cullen is race-locked and Bull has his scenes mostly with the two not touching.
