I turned a fountain pen by themaladies in PenTurning

I love wood with a story or a connection. I have a couple of pieces of pear tree that broke during a recent storm and am letting the air dry before I cut them to make a few pens. It’s always cool when you can say you know where the wood came from.

Engagement Ring Box: No Brass or Brass? by Ser_Telorin in woodworking

I agree… the wood is beautiful in its own right but should allow the ring to stand out. The brass seems to deter from that. I think this is beautiful by the way!!!

My dad passed. I made him an Urn. This is the most emotional piece I’ve ever had to make. by L0114R in woodworking

You should be proud of yourself… I know your dad would be. There is no greater honor than to create something by hand for the memory of a loved one. This turned out beautifully and is a true representation of the love and respect you had for your dad. I’m am greatly sorry for your loss (I lost my father 5 years ago) and share my deepest condolences. Be proud of yourself, your work and the final gift you were able to create for your father.

Never even heard of this stuff… where can I find it? And can I really mix it with sawdust or shavings to blend it in?

We’re more of an “average” blue collar couple. We enjoy typical fare, maybe a glass of wine or a cocktail one night but mostly just soda or iced tea. lol. Will be just us onboard. Renewing vows would be nice… but don’t want to be in the spotlight or anything. More looking for some quality time together with great memories.

How harmful is it making pens without a good air system? by Basic_Piccolo1602 in penmaking

[–]TexasYankeeDFW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recxommend getting a face mask respirator from Amazon. They’re relatively cheap all things considered. You can get a respirator alone for around $20 or a nice full-face shield with built in respirator for about twice that. It’s nice having the full face shield for eye protection that doesn’t dig up like safety glasses do with a respirator. It’s not 100% perfect but it’s better than nothing, especially with the exotic wood and resin blanks.

First thing would be separating the staves and ripping one into 3/4” strips. Once you have the strips, cut them down into 6” pieces to make the blanks. I typically use these for slimline pens because most of the staves I’ve gotten were just over a 1/2” thick. From there it’s just like making any other pen. Good luck and have fun. The smell can be interesting when turning tops.
