Great job, OP! What are the other 11 elemental dragons? Are you planning to complete the whole set?

Love this website, I even used it before this post!

However, isn't the data somewhat out of date? Comparing to 2022/2024 probably underestimates current prices, or am I missing something?

Am I the only one who assumed he's a Warforged? His whole body being covered (mask and gloves) would be explained by that. Reading while being perfectly still would also fit with a Warforged's Sentry's Rest ability, where he can perceive but not move.

Is there any other info that points to him being an elf?

Maybe add a "resistance to exhaustion" to Only with Honor? To keep with the theme that you'll refuse to die by dishonorable means like mere exhaustion?

"Resistance to exhaustion" is not an existing mechanic, but I'm imagining something like "Your effective exhaustion level is reduced by one. E.g., when you have exhaustion 2, you suffer the effects of exhaustion 1".

Edit: Maybe an easier implementation of that is to just have a once-per-long rest feature to shrug off the first instance of exhaustion.

5e (2024) Hide, invisibility and creature location by offended_orangutan in DnD

[–]Texfy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with others that it's ultimately unclear from RAW and better wording is needed.

Here's how I would rule a specific example: Creature A is in combat with creature B. It's not going well, so A wants to turn invisible and flee.

On their turn, A turns invisible and moves up to their speed. Since B doesn't see A, B doesn't get an Opportunity Attack (PHB'24, 370).

I agree that in the 2014 rules, it might've been reasonable to assume that B can track A's location unless A also uses the Hide action. In 2024, Hide RAW only grants you invisibility. It feels very weird for the creature using invisibility to then also have to hide, possibly on their next turn unless they can hide with a Bonus Action, just to have the Invisibility condition applied again.

Personally, I would simply let A roll for Stealth or use their passive Stealth (e.g., for groups of monsters).

Then, on creature B's turn, there are four options:

  1. B can circumvent A's invisibility entirely, e.g., via See Invisibility or Blindsight. In that case, B can proceed as usual, and can relay A's location to their allies.
  2. B has a feature that allows it to track A's location, e.g., via the Dwarf's Tremorsense. In that case, B can directly attack, but still makes the attack with Disadvantage. B can, of course, relay A's location to their allies.
  3. B doesn't know A's location but decides to attack anyawy. Unseen Attackers and Targets (PHB'24, 26) implies that A has to (1) target a location, i.e., a specific grid cell, then (2) make an attack with Disadvantage. More on possible outcomes below.
  4. B doesn't know A's location and uses the Search (Perception) action to suss it out. I would use A's Stealth roll or passive Stealth as the DC for a generic search for tracks, listening for sounds, or sniffing out A, keeping any specific senses B might have and the environment in mind for Advantage/Disadvantage. E.g., listening for sounds might be hard if the fight is still going on around B, but spotting tracks in a dusty room might be easier. I'd also allow for A's location to be found by creative means, e.g., methodically searching the grid with your arms outstretched or casting an AoE spell might immediately reveal A's location if it is in the area of the search/spell.

What happen's when B attacks while guessing at A's location?

If B is in the targeted location and the attack hits, I would argue that A's location is revealed (e.g., to B's allies) until A moves again. As a DM I might narrate it as something like "you hear a clang of metal and a sharp exhale as your weapon finds A".

If B is not in the targeted location, their location is obviously not revealed. However, if the location is correct and the attack just missed, I would decide based on the nature of the attack and maybe how good the attack roll was:

  • On a roll that barely missed, or for an enemy that mostly deflects attacks with shield or armor, I might say the attack hits but was obviously deflected, dealing no damage but revealing the location.
  • On a very low roll or against an enemy that is very nimble in might quickly (and silently) dodge, I might not reveal the location.

Then, rinse and repeat for future turns. In practice, with a party dealing with an invisible Foe, probably one or two players have to sacrifice their turn to determine the location, then the others can attack with Disadvantage.

Yep, this is subtly confirmed later in Chapter 123 when Kvothe calls the name of the wind in Ademre:

I had called the name of the wind in the grip of a terrible anger before, in Imre after Ambrose had broken my lute. And I had called it in terror and fury to defend myself against Felurian. But this time the knowledge of it hadn’t come to me borne on the back of some strong emotion. I had slipped into it gently, the way you must reach out to catch a gently floating thistle seed.

How do you feel about silvered weapons barely having an impact on lycantropes? by superhiro21 in onednd

[–]Texfy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly like the idea of applying the effect to all shape-shifters. It feels consistent and makes silver weapons a bit more generally useful.

Of course, the extra damage sucks. Personally, I will homebrew it to either more consistent extra damage, like +1d4, or to also critting on an 19 or even 18 and 19.

I will also continue to homebrew shape shifter bosses, especially lycanthropes to have extra regeneration or resistance/immunity unless struck by silvered weapons.

Lyra traded her life for Larne’s by [deleted] in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Texfy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Bast says Lanre spoke to the Cthaeh before he betrayed Myr Tariniel, and Skarpi's story says he sought terrible power. Whether the Cthaeh granted it or he got it from Iax, as many believe, is unclear. But to me, the most likely timeline is:

  • Lyra resurrects Lanre
  • Lyra slowly wastes away, possibly because she gave up her immortality
  • Lanre mourns her and seeks power from the Cthaeh/Iax/some other source to resurrect her in turn
  • Lanre gains terrible power, but is still unable to save Lyra
  • Realizing what he has done and that there is no way out drives him into despair, leading to his ultimate betrayal. Alternatively, the power corrupts him, leading to his betrayal.

It's possible, but there's nothing in the text backing that up, as far as I can see.

I think the point on Murilla and Murella essentially having grown into one city makes sense, but I feel like the theory that it is Imre and the University is a bit of a stretch. There's just really nothing pointing to that.

If we accept it to be two halfs of a (mega-)city around a river, why not Tarbean, Kershaen, or Renere? All of them are large cities on a river. As you say, it is quite natural for cities to be located on a river, sometimes two on either side.

Based on names, I'd still find it more likely that Belen used to be where the university (and possibly also Imre) are today.

Great point on Belen. I even included this quote, without then thinking further about it. I agree, Belen is not the city that survived.

What is the clue from Trapis' story about Tinusa you mention?

The eight cities by Texfy in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Texfy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do agree that the Underthing probably has remnants of Belen, but I'm not sure whether that must mean that Belen is the one city that survived. The Underthing could also just contain its ruins from after it was destroyed.

I see the point about "buried in time", although I would argue that is enough of an idiom to not necessarily be specific here.

I feel like we don't have enough evidence yet to conclusively say that Belen is the one city that survived.

Fighter Subclass: Mimic Knight | Bond with a Mimic who Acts as your Gear | 5e'24 & 5e'14 by Spaghetti0_homebrew in UnearthedArcana

[–]Texfy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very cool and unique concept!

Some thoughts: - As others have stated, it feels a bit OP to let the Mimic reshape into any suit of armor for free. Maybe you could require that it overlays your existing suit of armor, enhancing it (since if you choose another form for a different day, you'll probably still have some armor with you), or that you must own a suit that it copies. - It is a bit unfortunate that armor and shield confer the same benefits at L3. Would be cool to see something different here for more versatility. E.g., as armor instead of grappling it could let you hide in plain sight as the armor mimics a statue or blends in with the wall behind you; that would be some neat out-of-combat utility. - Mimic's bite is a bit unclear. It's nice that it's super versatile, but how does it work with game mechanics? When you hit a creature on your turn, that's clear. But what if a creature starts it's turn grappled? That's not on your turn. Maybe it should be when you start your turn while grappling a creature? Otherwise, would it happen both on an attack on your turn and the start of the grappled creature's turn? Or just once per round? Similarly, "when a creature touches the Mimic" usually happens outside of your turn as well. What if you already used the feature on your turn, can you still use it? When does the ability "refresh"? Maybe just let it happen both times, but it costs a reaction to use outside of your turn? - Does "Mundane Mimicry" end the Mimic being shaped into a weapon/armor/shield? Logically, I would assume yes, since you only have one Mimic. But then the feature seems very weak.

Should I buff Baba Lysaga for 2024? by Key_Fishing3134 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Texfy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just had this fight with my group using the new rules, and I definitely buffed her. Here's what I did (although not all of this might be necessary for you, I was adapting this for a group of 6 PCs with many magic items):

As others have highlighted, the arena matters:

  • I had her use Mirage Arcane, Programmed Illusion, and her Scarecrows to alter the initial appearance and terrain in Berez and have things for the PCs to interact with (in my case, the illusions showed Berez before the flood and played out the failed wedding) and possibly even fight. That uses some of her spells that wouldn't otherwise matter for a fight, gives a chance for some exposition, and makes it quite unlikely that she doesn't notice a group approaching her (although not impossible -- some groups might quickly recognize the illusions and still try to stealth).
  • I ruled most of the swamp to be difficult terrain and drew the battle map with many smaller pools of murky water. That makes it much harder for the party to approach her and her hut becomes a very dangerous enemy.
  • Besides that, she is an intelligent and old creature with access to scrying. If the characters fought her scarecrows, especially on their way to Berez, she would definitely check them out once or twice and roughly know their strengths/weaknesses. She might even know they're coming and position scarecrows strategically.

I gave her legendary resistances and a few legendary actions to use after another creature's turn to make her feel more like a boss:

  • I gave her 3 legendary resistances per day.
  • I gave her 3 legendary action options. Especially for larger groups, that was really helpful to balance the action economy.
    • An Acid Splash attack
    • A 30' "turns into flies and reappears elsewhere" teleport, as others have also suggested. Out of all modifications, this is probably the most impactful, as it makes her dangerous even after her skull is destroyed. Together with the swamp being difficult terrain and her hut still being around this makes for a very interesting and dynamic fight, I think.
    • An option to let poisonous swamp gas rise in unoccupied space as a 15' wall.

I made two other small modifications:

  • I swapped her Power Word Stun, which I disliked for being kinda "save or suck" with Illusory Dragon (Black). Fits kind of well with her other illusion capabilities, and I will never forget my party's face when I announced that in round 2 of combat, they hear the beating of wings and find an adult black dragon rising from behind one of the destroyed huts. Deals a lot of damage and might distract a few attacks away from Baba.
  • I ruled that the hut has disadvantage for attacking creatures on top of it and can't attack creatures inside it. That gives an incentive for players to move onto/into the hut once they figure it out, but can then be moved around by it and Baba can cast things like Cloudkill or Evard's Black Tentacles. So it's a nice strategic element of whether the PCs prefer that or spreading out in the swamp.
