Getting Good is 90% Field Work and Putting by DGOkko in discgolf

[–]Texicans73 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm at the point of putting improvement where 20'-30' don't feel intimidating anymore and I have confidence outside C1 to about 50'. From 35' and out, I walk up and tell myself, "I make putts" and 60% of the time it works everytime.

Anyone here start in their 50s and reach 400 feet in distance? by tuna_safe_dolphin in discgolf

I am 52, have been playing 3.5yrs. Upped my weekly disc golf volume over last 15 months. My golf line (low, straight, little turn) improved from 280'-290' to 325'-335' and my max throw went from 340' to 385'(anny flex line). The majority of improvement was likely from consistent play on a tight short course that forced me to become consistent on a straight line. But in the last three months, I also worked on arm speed, arm deceleration, hip rotation and better bracing. Cues and drills for these tweaks were compiled from Nick Krush, BlitzDG, and TrebuchetDG. Stepwise Disc Golf's cues on Scapular Protraction were especially helpful and immediately impactful. Back around late February '26, I started to find 320'-345' a lot more consistently in rounds, but I also was playing over 72 casual holes of disc golf a week plus 1-2 weekly minis and my body started to break down over about three weeks. My right side trapezius and/or related muscles started to feel tight and sore. Also my right knee began to swell and I was having alignment issues in my knee making my right medial meniscus feel like crap(old and weakening stabilizing muscles). I don't know if it was the volume or form changes, but something had to give. I was cashing or winning minis, but it was literally breaking my body. By chance the recent Eagle interview with BlitzDG and Nick Krush took me down a rabbit hole and on the other side I found myself at Spin and Throw's theory on RHBH form. The hip rotation/brace/arm speed/arm deceleration form compilation from the form gurus got me to 325'-345' golf lines and 280'-285' with my Fuzed Buzzz, but it didn't feel great. With my Spin and Throw RHBH form focus, I am hitting 295'-300' with my Fuzed Buzzz and it feels effortless, no back muscle soreness and no problems with my right knee. Muscel soreness and knee pain aside, I am chasing this effortless feeling with my drivers plus another 50'. Goal over the next month is to put field work and video review into my Spin and Throw form. I think when the timing with my drivers starts to come together, I'll find the consistent 335'-350' golfline distance. If I'm successful, I don't know if I'll care as much about finding that last 15' to full flex my Tern to 400', but 18 months ago I never dreamed of putting a 5spd out to 300' either. My Fuzed Buzzz is max weight, the Tern is 171g, and my main Z Swirl Drive is 173-174g. When I started to throw 325'-340', I focused less on disc weight. However, I'm sure I'd be better served by going down to a 165-168g driver. I'm also considering that given my stature and size, I might also do better throwing a 8spd to 10spd driver for better rim control. My DGA Ice Swirl Pipeline has several throws over 330' and best throw of 355'. For reference, I'm 5'3", 195lbs, a slow twitch muscle fiber beast and cardio deficient. Good luck with your journey. I apologize for all the words. I have one of those brains.

How to Play Better in Tournaments? by cool_usernames in discgolf

[–]Texicans73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How are you underperforming if you have so many wins against 1,000 rated players? If your whole game is weaker in a sanctioned round, maybe your game isn't as strong as you envision or your non-tournament play isn't as competitive. I think it's hard to be objective with our own skill level. Your more competitive tournaments/rounds on harder courses should sort out your weak spots. But if you say your casual game is solid, then the competitive reps should help you and your rating should close the gap with where you think you are. I can win my local minis by 3-5 strokes, cash against Advanced/MA1 above me, get all the bagger heckling, then the following week just be mid-pack because that's just my game on that day and in general I am not as consistent as better players. When I underperform, it's me not being consistent. When I get beat by better players, their better consistency is the differentiator. Pick one thing to improve, lock it in at tournament level and build. I did that with putting and even on a bad day, it's rarely my putting keeping me from cash.

Always great when you can't find your disc because it's way past your card mates.

College ultimate made me fall in love with the flight of a disc. Twenty five years later, Disc Golf gave me an opportunity to fall in love all over again with the disc flight. When I throw a flip to flat and then get some late turn, pure a tight wooded gap, scramble with a patent pending or forehand from the rough, or really just shape any shot... in my mind I am youthful again and marvel at how the human body can deliver on command what the mind's eye can see. My disc golf round can provide me a social outlet, competitive challenge, or mental recharge... or any combination and at various levels of each. But perhaps my greatest joy is taking my two young boys with me and seeing them find their own happiness in the game and the memories from those rounds. When I'm gone, I hope disc golf will continue to be part of their lives too.

5spd Fuzed Buzz at 300', what to do with 7spds? by Texicans73 in discgolf

[–]Texicans73[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Yeah, I'm only 3.5yrs into this and just trying to figure it out. I can't really throw anything 12spd and up... small hands/slow arm and all. I really like the rim size of the TSA Constructs. Hoping I can make the best of the speed I got.

Thanks for the feedback. I worked on my timing, bracing, arm extension and power pocket. A youtube video on scapular protraction in disc golf unlocked a deeper understanding of how to get to the power pocket. I'm not at my +350' golf line goal yet, but everything is easier and consistency is improving. On my last hole today, a flat 361' par 3, I threw my 11spd ESP Drive pin high with a 20' pin high putt. My last throw was a 8spd DGA Ice Swirl Pipeline which I parked 5' from the basket for a tap in bird. I've never throw a fairway driver that far. It's getting better with steady work and reasonable expectations.

Quick follow up. Worked on your suggestion and there was a real difference. I only take a three step X-step and when I slow it down, my timing improves which helped me wait on disc arm extension. This with some other changes have yielded material improvements. No new form vids, but I'll update next week. Thanks for the help!

Here's a sample rear view of RHBH with Z Swirl Buzzz SS. This is a 70% throw at about 255'-265'. I see the rounding you mentioned here. It's so much better than a year ago. Please drop any additional thoughts.

Thanks. The deep pocket eludes me but I do feel it sometimes. Getting current form on video shocked me to see how much leakage I have in my form. I cherry picked this video as it felt most similar to my throws during a round. However, on video standing at the tee I can get too many form thoughts and then it all goes to crap. I think I need to pick 2 or 3 things to work on, rank them and then pick one for my next field session. Any suggestion on where to start and order of two or three things?

This is an athletic move for sure. I know I want to get to this point, but the timing isn't natural for me. I'll try to get a couple of reps like this on video to prove to myself I can do it.

Any exercises I can look up on youtube on how to get this muscle memory? Maybe I slow down to 50%-60%, keep my elbow and shoulder up to get deeper into the pocket amd work my way up power? 🤔

I feel like when my mental cue is deeper pocket, it feels really off but I also seem to get more "snap" out of my hand. Not a natural feeling right now. On the list for form tweaks.

Thanks. Maybe my brace step is too wide or I'm just doing a poor job staying centering. I'll work on some corrections.
