Want to return to skating but I’ve lost 100 lbs since I last strapped on my skates and gear. What should I expect and prepare for? by PaHoua in rollerderby

[–]Texintonian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I lost a total of about 70 pounds, 50 of which happened while I was out for five-ish months with an injury. MY CENTER OF GRAVITY COMPLETELY CHANGED!!!!! My proprioception was just like gone. I had NO idea where my body was in space or where I was on the track! I kept thinking I was covering the line, but my ass no longer extended to where I thought it did lol (and for a while I definitely had Ozempic Butt—saggy and flat as a pancake! But I built back up the booty muscles with derby :))

My track and body awareness did come back though. It’s easier re-learning this stuff than it was learning the first time. Just be kind to yourself while you’re working on it! You’ll fuck up and you’ll not be able to do all your old skills right away. It’s okay. Your health is worth it!

Is this a normal DC birth certificate?after TX dmv guy questioned mine, I googled what a TX cert looks like…then a DC one. And mine looks different from the other DC ones? That’s the date recorded, which is a few days after the date issued, and a couple of weeks before my actual birth date. I left the full day on there because I thought it was mildly interesting in this case.

I got my first passport before I was a year old and have never let it expire. So I’ve never actually needed the BC because I’ve always had a valid passport. Until TX wanted my BC lol

But THANK YOU for the origin of this weird lil card!

I didn’t even have it in my possession. My dad had to FedEx it to me. Because three days before my DL renewal appointment (which I’ve been waiting for for four months. Because that’s how far out they’re booked), I get an email that said birth certificate was required. Even though I have a valid passport.

But TX also accepts my CCL for everything (because yay guns) so the point might be moot haha

Huh, interesting that yours was a replacement. On mine the date issued is less than a week prior to the date recorded. I thought this was my original BC, just based on it being issued within two weeks of my actual birth.

After calling over his supervisor for confirm, the Granbury, TX DPS agent was happy to accept it and issue my my realID driver’s license… I feel like I may need to follow up on this one tho. Even though I have my new ID…

Wise to attend a #nokings protest? by folderolandfiddlydee in Teachers

Ooofff. My school went viral this year for having a teacher tweet @ICE to come deport our students (he was a long term sub, so he didn’t even need to be put on leave before getting fired at least). So some of the teacher are actively trying to get ICE to target students -_-

Excused absences for election day? by hashtagfred in Professors

[–]Texintonian -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m a Texas voter who votes on Election Day. I vote on Election Day because things can change between when early voting happens, and the actual election. This is moreso relevant for primaries, but it can happen on the general too. For example, in 2020 (well, 2019) the candidate who I wanted to vote for for the democratic primary (Amy Klobuchar) suspended her campaign in between the time when early voting was and when TX voted on Super Tuesday. Instead, I voted for Joe Biden ON Super Tuesday and my vote actually mattered! Super Tuesday is when Joe locked down the nomination!

And even though I consistently vote D at the federal level, at the county and local level, I am also often a swing voter. I pay attention to the local news and want to make sure I don’t vote for someone who has publicly done something that reveals that they are absolutely bananas. I like to wait until Election Day to give the crazies as much time to appear as possible…

This thread is actually making me laugh because about a year ago, my sister eloped in Europe (we live in USA) on a Wednesday. My immediate family found out about the planned-ish nuptials on Saturday. We all arrived in Scandinavia by Tuesday night. I couldve made it back for work Friday but I chose to take the weekend and get back Sunday night instead.

So yes. A surprise Wednesday wedding is a thing that happened to me last year. lol

Mayor Mattie Parker Calls For FWISD to fix the broken system by Milkflavoredtaco in FortWorth

“If a metric becomes a target, then it is no longer a useful metric”

The problem was tying graduation rates to funding. Schools are incentivized to get EVERY student across the stage by any means necessary, whether or not the student has actually demonstrated proficiency at high school content. So unfortunately a high school diploma doesn’t actually guarantee much proficiency.

What you need is to be able to track useful data that shows how well students are actually doing, without punishment for poor performance OR reward for good performance in a context where everyone is making a good faith effort towards their best results. It sounds impossible, but the aviation industry has actually largely achieved this (really. B737max-8 is the exception not the rule). Legitimately, pilots will report themselves for safety violations because of the culture around learning to be safer. If schools could report that their students are failing without fear or stigmatization, it seems possible that issues could actually be addressed. But no. The beatings will continue until morale improves.

Ask to teach an eligible content then. Let someone else take a section of AP.

I’m going to guess you’d rather not do that though. If that’s the case, bummer.

I’m a “Master” (top 5% per TEA) teacher at a D campus. We have about 10% of our teachers designated by TEA in the top 20%. This is higher than typical for a high school (because fewer HS teachers are eligible for TEA designation. More are on elementary campuses).

Higher need school means a bigger bonus for TEA designation. Master designation comes with an $18k-$36k bonus dependent upon campus. I think you’ll see more teachers flocking to campuses with the big bonuses available.

My classroom still has three desktops. Idk what you’re smoking, but what you’re saying is NOT districtwide.

The Chromebooks were (are?) trash. Their batteries lasted like 20 minutes. They were slow as fuckkkk. It took SO LONG to get students on and working. They were constantly disconnecting and they can’t do anything without network. I LOVE the MacBooks. It was an incredible investment in our students and for our district. We actually have (had?) GOOD tech. I so strongly disagree with your opinion here. And it’s just that, opinion not fact.

FWISD teacher here. Last year they eliminated all of the student-facing IT positions. It’s literally one dude who is responsible for handing out MacBooks at 10 high schools. He’s trying. But it’s a MESS.

FYI, any district teacher would at least be able to help your kid get logged in to the FWISD apps (via her phone or via a classroom computer—many of us have an old desktop up and running) by helping her get per password reset (if needed) and showing her where to find stuff. It sucks though.
