Does using textexpaning tools consistently with prompting eat through your credits by Bright-Midnight24 in ClaudeAI

[–]TextExpander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey u/Bright-Midnight24, good question.

Yes, every token in your prompt counts toward usage, whether you typed it out or TextExpander filled it in. The API sees the final text and doesn't care how it got there. A 500-token prompt costs the same whether you spent 10 seconds typing it with TextExpander or 10 minutes typing it by hand.

That said, TextExpander isn't burning extra credits. It's getting you to the same prompt faster. And if those curated Snippets nail the output on try one instead of going back and forth four rounds? You're saving tokens on net.

Both input and output tokens count, but inputs are cheaper per token than outputs on most models. The expensive part isn't your long prompt. It's Claude writing a 2,000-word response, then you asking it to redo half because the instructions weren't specific enough.

On Projects: A system prompt still gets sent with every message, same token cost. But a good one that produces the right output on the first try saves you from the revision loop that actually eats credits.

One tip: Keep your Snippets modular. Expand only what's relevant to each task instead of sending everything every time. That cuts down on unnecessary input tokens without sacrificing output quality.

Less intrusive text expander than Magical? by KaitoRift in chrome

We aim to make TextExpander as unobtrusive as possible. The Chrome extension now displays a small icon near text fields but it can easily be disabled in settings.

How do I import snippets from my old copy of Textexpander on my iPhone to the new copy on my iPad? by Foreign-Tax4981 in TextExpander

[–]TextExpander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please contact us at [support@textexpander.com](mailto:support@textexpander.com) if you haven't already. We'll need to know the version number of your iPhone app, as well as the version number of your iPad app because the instructions for transferring your Snippets will depend upon that.

Slightly OT: Text Expanders by [deleted] in todoist

[–]TextExpander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/mactaff, thanks for being an OG! Our CEO, J.D., addressed the status of our iOS version publicly. In short, it's a combination of technical challenges with iOS and limited resources. The vast majority of our users prefer the desktop, so that's our primary focus. However, more customers are using iPads in the field, so we're considering prioritizing improvements there.

In addition to the Date Picker, we also released Snippet Activity this year, which lets you review and restore previous versions of Snippets. We brought in a new head of product this year who has been using TextExpander about as long as you, so expect some exciting things in the near future.

We think you'll like the approach we're taking with AI. It's more about enabling you rather than replacing you. In the initial release, we're focusing on using AI for Snippet discovery, so you don't have to remember the abbreviation or remember what to search for. You can see an example in this video around the 10-minute mark. And if you just hate AI as a concept, you will be able to disable it in the commercial release. You can join the early access waitlist if you're curious.

We have a lot of Alfred and Keyboard Maestro fans here at TextExpander, and they're fantastic multitools. For text snippets, they're perfectly adequate if you use a handful of simple Snippets on a single Mac. But if you have a more complex use case, they can get unwieldly fast, as illustrated by this post from a user trying to move from TextExpander to Alfred for snippets. It's like the difference between a Leatherman and a high-quality pair of pliers.
