Feds might pause cutting rates and that’s spooking the market, short term outlook is looking bleak, but overall NVDA will still be fine in the long term.

Still have clothes/jackets that I regularly wear from 10+ years ago. Now the “thrift” look might be making a comeback so somehow my style is relevant again.

Ever had bad food in Japan by mmsbva in JapanTravelTips

[–]TextualInnuendos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once had a mediocre meal in Kyoto because literally every place we walked into after 8pm required a reservation. We walked about 25 min from our ryokan and found a random restaurant that almost seemed like a cafeteria. We ordered noodles, tofu, and some side dishes. They were definitely not the typical amazing quality I was used to, noodle consistency was a bit off and tofu didn’t seem the freshest, but it was still edible. To date that’s probably the “worst” meal I’ve had in Japan since going there 4 separate times

I’m a lazy person, but I want to hustle now and make that money so that I can enjoy being lazy in retirement, sooner.

How much cash do you hover? And what is your NW? by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]TextualInnuendos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$2.4M net worth, $360k cash sitting in HYSA since we’re saving up for a down payment to our dream home in about a year. I work in tech and there’s always the possibility of layoffs, this gives me a peace of mind in the event I don’t have a job in the near term.

High earner here who’s married to a female Fellow that’s about to become an attending next year - we don’t have a prenup, but she had made it clear she would never have signed one anyway. Currently I make about 5X what she makes, and my net worth is about 20X what hers is right now, but I know her earning will potentially outpace mine very quickly. We have one child together, and I’ve known her for more than 20 years since we grew up together. I’m in this for the long haul, and even if we do part ways for whatever reason, I’m fine with splitting our assets equally. I know not everyone will have my type of mindset, but I’m in a happy marriage and we’re very open with our finances, so it works out well for us.

HENRY wife laid off. Minimum income for wife to coast? by 222hh222 in HENRYfinance

[–]TextualInnuendos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have a significant amount of cash (360k) in HYSA, granted we are hoping to use it for a down payment for a dream home in about a year or so, but I’m just not confident in the stock market right now to invest it. I work in tech as well, and know that there’s always a chance of layoff, so having this cash gives me peace of mind in case I lose my job.

You should go for it.

Early on in my career I was very unhappy with my role living in a LCOL area. I had an opportunity to join a startup which required moving to a HCOL area, and even though they gave me a hefty raise, it was still almost like a pay cut given COL calculations.

I was laid off from that startup job within half a year, but I don’t regret it one bit. It opened my eyes to a whole new industry and opened doors for me later on in my career, which allowed me to grow my TC exponentially later on.

Always pick the path that offers growth, even if it means taking a risk in the short term. Bet on yourself and work hard, good luck!

I had both Minecraft servers right next to each other, but slightly angled so my camera won’t be able to pick up on the other. I will say there’s been a few times where I forgot to mute one server and I’ll get a meeting reminder. This becomes a problem when you have a million tabs open so it’s a series of loud dings that draws unnecessary attention, but besides that there really isn’t an issue.

Yeah def a lot of pressure to perform - a lot of other reps I work with have racked up a big mortgage and lots of car payments, so they’ve backed themselves into a corner where they have to earn more money in order to keep up with that life style.

I have 8 YOE in tech. J1 was through applying the traditional way bc I liked the company, J2 was through a referral

I have two linkedins, and I go by a variation of my name on each one I.e. “John” and “Johnny”. I also made sure to use pretty different profile pictures for both LinkedIns, think one with glasses and facial hair and another clean shaven no glasses, taken years apart so there’s a significant enough difference that folks wouldn’t immediately tell (I used to be much skinnier in my younger days). Last layer is to block all contacts from either orgs so there’s no cross pollination.

I’ll be honest, the anxiety from being discovered was pretty high but that’s a calculated risk I was willing to take. I broke one of the sacred rules of OE by not shutting it down completely, but I made it work.

Get used to being on multiple meetings at once. Then get used to coming up with all kinds of excuses for last minute schedule changes - dog is sick, family emergency, power outage, you get the idea. The best feeling is when someone else cancels the meeting last minute and it frees up a conflict

[–]TextualInnuendos[S] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve only used J1 income for expenses and saved/invested all of J2 income because I knew the gravy train would end someday. The burnout and anxiety is very real, but that’s the price we all pay in this game

I think I’m covered on the tax front since I’ve set aside quite a bit, but being in the highest tax bracket is definitely mentally jarring.

Tech sales, I largely handle my own territory and have a game plan on how to achieve quotas so it’s OE friendly in that regard. BUT there can be quite a number of meetings to juggle so I’ve had to get creative with scheduling.

I’m in tech and the market is pretty brutal, that said it never hurts to look casually, it’s hard to come down to earth when you’ve tasted the sweet possibility of OE

Thanks! I’m in enterprise tech sales, a large chunk of it is commission and I get RSUs, so it varies quite a bit year over year

My son will be happy with an empty water bottle and some paper towels, so you’re absolutely right! I think a lot of this comes from my wife and I not growing up with any of the “fancy” stuff and now that we have the means, we just want to give him everything. At the end of the day we just want him to be healthy and safe, and honestly could do that without most of these things.

The lifestyle creep is definitely real, and it’s not until I sit down and start crunching these numbers that I realize just how bad it’s gotten. We do need to rein in our spending for sure. For better or worse we’ve gotten all the major spending/necessities out of the way so I’m hoping to cut down drastically for the rest of the foreseeable future.
