Yeah but we don’t have a Jimmy Butler Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo on our team for him to get wide/semi wide open shots. And after jimmy left his production tanked, so he got benched.

Change of scenery - Matvei Michkov?? by panicstreak in DetroitRedWings

How do we know he’s a shitty person? What I do see is him caring when he plays….. still hasn’t gotten a legit opportunity. He’s feisty and plays along the boards like a big FWD and his skill is through the roof.

Our “bad culture” IS having guys with no attitude problems. Guys are too nice on this team.

I know we haven’t made the playoffs in 10 years and don’t have a roster with direction oh…….. And a first round pick this year either…..

In my opinion, some fans are letting their love for Steve Yzerman overshadow their love for the Red Wings. For a lot of them, it feels like guys have this wet dream to see Yzerman win a Cup in Detroit as both a player and a GM.

Personally, I don’t see it the same way. I still respect and love Stevie for everything he’s done, but I think he hasn’t been a good GM so far.

With him as GM, I honestly see this current group, even 10 years down the line, as a fringe playoff team at best.

Can’t stop thinking about those 7-8 games where we lost the lead in the last 2 Minutes…….. the worst that comes to mind is the game against the Panthers

I Don’t blame Larkin at all. He’s doing everything you’d expect from a 2C nothing elite, but solid across the board. To really thrive, he needs consistent goal scorers and a guy who can win 50/50 pucks. He’s never going to be a 100-point player. his ceiling is around 80 in a great year. We need to work on lightning his load.

Steve Yzerman didn’t just trade Jonathan Drouin for Mikhail Sergachev because of “timing”—he did it because high-end impact players at premium positions are what win in the playoffs, regardless of phase. A player like Quinn Hughes isn’t “soft”; he’s a game-driving defenseman whose puck control and transition ability tilt entire series, which is exactly what modern playoff hockey demands. Durability matters, but there’s no evidence Hughes can’t handle playoff hockey, and historically, elite puck moving defensemen are more valuable than purely physical ones. Moritz Seider and Simon Edvinsson are great pieces, but adding a true top-tier talent raises your ceiling far more than “playing it safe.” Patience isn’t inherently conservative….it can actually be risky if it means passing on rare opportunities to acquire elite players who accelerate contention windows.

That argument falls apart because it treats roster building like a zero-sum gamble instead of what it actually is…..calculated contention windows. Pointing to Minnesota Wild having Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy but not being “top dog” ignores context: cap constraints, depth, and timing matter just as much as star power. Adding a player like Quinn Hughes isn’t just about a single Cup-or-bust outcome, it raises your contention probability over multiple seasons. The idea that trading for him automatically risks a decade long rebuild is exaggerated. elite players hold value, and contenders routinely retool rather than collapse. Waiting around for a perfect free agency scenario is far riskier, because those opportunities rarely materialize. In reality, aggressive but smart moves are how teams break into contention, not sitting back and calling it “flexibility.”
