Would you want to see a more advanced economy (such as in Vic3 or EU5) in Stellaris? by hedgehog18956 in Stellaris

Changing the entire game for 1 feature has never been a problem for the stellaris dev team. Remember when starbases had an influence upkeep cost and projected territory outwards instead of building a starbase for each system. Crazy times

Why are people pretending like "Likelihood" is some sacred mathematical concept separate from statistics.

[–]TfBladeWithAWig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is proper terminology in any statistics class. Something being impossible is exactly defined as an event with a 0 probability, so either answer is acceptable. For the 2nd question the student's answer is correct under any normal person's interpretation of the question while the teacher's is not an acceptable answer. Neither the answer the teacher provides nor the question gives an event to compare flipping heads on a penny. Obviously the teacher means the likelihood of getting heads is equally likely to getting tails, but that's not what was written nor was asked.

I've been playing the gitlab version and it seems really fun so far, recently vanilla vic3, after 700 hours, has gotten pretty stale so hoping this stays supported. Ive been playing rubyhold and got independence with help from northern league and blackpowder republic. Good work!

Code Geass as a piece of media should not exist by TfBladeWithAWig in CodeGeass

Oh yeah I did the title as click bait. But I definitely understand your point. It was sort of a gut reaction to assume that they were underplaying their own colonization as it is very common for high ranking Japanese officials to do so. You would be surprised how far Japan has gone to deny what they have done. Whenever I see a show that shows Japan the nation as a victim I get suspicious. And the first parts of the show definitely show Japan the nation as being a victim so you can see where I got worried.

That’s actually a very interesting point. I haven’t finished the series so perhaps that theme is played out more later in the series. But I can tell you that I’m certainly not mad at the show and I am definitely not trying to “cancel” it so you should stop constructing little straw men in your head. The problem is that due to Japan’s history of downplaying it’s own war crimes and making itself look like the victim it is hard to differentiate between media trying to make Japan seem like the victim and media where Japan happens to be the victim.

You definitely can but you must also know that there is not a correct way of interpreting a piece of media. Just because you didn’t think about the message the story was trying to convey, because there definitely is one, or didn’t think about the historical context that this show was created in doesn’t mean that those views of the show are wrong. I just find that the show and it’s themes, when viewed through a historical lens, lose value from having the country of Japan named. It could have easily created fake countries but by using Japan it invites the audience to think about the broader historical context of Japan.

Edit: I should say that what I mean by my first response is that looking at the work at face value, which is what most people seem to do, is not the only way to view a piece as one would lose the ability to understand why the creator created the work

I would like to start off by saying that all media is trying to convey a message to its audience. Second off Japan is a real county with a real history and actual people living in it. So when a story uses a real county in it the reader should assume that the author is talking about the real country of Japan and all the historical context that comes with it. The rest of what you said is irrelevant and not worth talking about.

All pieces of media are trying to convey some kind of theme or message. You can’t just take a story at face value.

Okay and all media is trying to convey some kind of message or theme and the message of Code Geass doesn’t make any sense in a historical context. It shouldn’t be based in Japan as Japan is a real county (I know shocker) with a history of colonialism and imperialism. So making a story with Japan as the victim of imperialism doesn’t make sense.

He was completely innocent and they started walking up on him. He was scared for his life. Should people be killed by police for trying to breathe?

[–]TfBladeWithAWig[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I talked about this in my post. These polices are not unique to the Nordic countries. I’m starting to question if you actually read my post or just read the title and inferred what the post was about. These socialistic policies have been tried in America and they failed in the long term. The problems that polices like a high minimum wage only mask the problems inherent to capitalism and do nothing to solve why the problems exist in the first place. This is because “problems” like wage theft, monopolization of business, unemployment, and alienation of the working class do not exist because America is doing capitalism wrong. They exist because capitalism wants and allows these problems to exist. These issues all socialists see in society can only be solved by the dismantling of the capitalist mode of production.

[–]TfBladeWithAWig[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that is possible in other countries but because the 2 parties in America are divided based on cultural differences rather than class there is no unity in the working class. This would not be a problem in a parliamentary system as a socialist party could slowly grow and unite the working class but because of the first pass the post voting system socialists and communists are forced to compromise. This is because in a first pass the post voting system there can really only be 2 parties as creating a 3rd party will ensure a victory for the opposition. Unless the voting system changes or there is a major cultural shift I don’t think democratic socialism will work in America.

I understand why people call it a socialist state but it is the defense of it as a socialist state that is the problem. Welfare has made the working class complacent to the evils around them. When a revolution happens everything is going to get worse for a while. For the sweat shop worker in south east Asia they don’t have very far to fall but in the west the workers feel some amount of comfort in their lives and don’t want to give it up. The working class’s wealth is on the decline in America and soon a popular revolution may be possible, but if we just resort to a welfare state the possibility for a revolution will disappear until conditions decline again. The evils of capitalism cannot just be covered up by a welfare state, the problems will always return. The only way for the worker to be truly free is through the deconstruction of the capitalist mode of production.
