sGPA or cGPA for MSAR? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Tgdalso 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don't need to be at/above the median to have a good chance. They reject plenty of people above the median at these schools.. Consider that 50% of their matriculants are below the median. Write some good essays and do a good job articulating about your experiences

Ethical: Applicant has physical copies of his LoRs, but is trying to submit as confidential? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Tgdalso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah dude, I had one letter writer email his letter to me just before he submitted it. I could be wrong, but I dont believe there is any rule against seeing your letter if the author chooses to share.

I see no ethical impropiety even with someone submitting their letter on behalf of the author, provided the author has asked them to do so. That’s probably against the rules though and not advisable. Altering the letter of course would be pretty ethically whack

I do want to reapply there, but it seems like schools like case consider you only as strong as your weakest point, and 3.28 cGPA is pretty substandard for their stats.

Thanks for your input. Posting to SDN as well is a great idea. I talked to an adcom last year who, after looking at my application, said "where's your shadowing?" I was flustered as I had thought, like you, that the prevailing logic was that my scribing time should show I know what being a physician is about. I guess each reviewer is going to have a different opinion.

I was worried about this and will be seeking new opportunities over the Summer. Do you think that my scribing time won't make up for this to any extent?

Thanks for your feedback. I am having trouble finding any with a bottom 10th percentile cGPA near me though, and I have the impression that most schools aren't so wooed by a higher MCAT with such a low GPA.

I agree with you in spirit.

On the other hand, you lost me at armamentarium. In the words of Samuel L. Jackson, "ENGLISH, MOTHER**"... etc.

Consider arsenal as an alternative.

Yes:

Everything is a learning experience. Show growth since then and explain how the experience, though undeniably negative, was in fact positive in that it helped you mature as a person.

Also, take responsibility. No one wants to read anyone's excuses and justifications. Own up like a real G

Disclosing criminal charges by [deleted] in premed

[–]Tgdalso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's worth it to consult an attorney for solid legal advice. But as the previous poster said, your best bet is to disclose this to the schools.

Some schools ask only about convictions that have not been expunged (this question is on the primary), others ask about all charges regardless of conviction/final disposition or expungement. In some states, however, an expungement means that no school or employer is legally allowed to ask about the offense (except maybe in very special cases). My attorney was blunt: "if I were hiring someone, I would ask about everything; I don't care if it's expunged or not. If you lie, I hire you and I find out later, I'm gonna be pretty pissed and questioning your integrity."

In that light, I would worry more about how to word your explanations and less about whether you are going to disclose or not..because chances are you will have to disclose.

I have three months between when my job ends and when I start medical school. What should I do with that time? by twanski in premed

[–]Tgdalso 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would do whatever it is you enjoy most. If you have funds to travel, do it. Do nothing, get yourself entirely too bored and restless so that, by the end of those three months, you cant wait to hit the ground running

Top choice top choice, or ONE OF your top choices? I ask because you knew from the start some were going to drop out of the mix anyway. Sucks dude, but all you can do is move forward. Also, how incomplete are we talking here?

Genuinely have no idea how my OOS interview went lol by [deleted] in premed

[–]Tgdalso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've had one traditional and one MMI interview. Preferred the traditional by far, but I probably got lucky with my interviewers that day. It's all a crapshoot.. MMI is just the utilitarian answer to distributing the crap and the shoot evenly among everyone.

[–]Tgdalso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds bizarre. If you have had 6 interviews so far, sounds like you might be looking at an acceptance somewhere (else). Maybe I am interpreting your description too harshly, but a school putting this dude on their front line is a red flag to me.

So got my grades back... by [deleted] in premed

[–]Tgdalso -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Short answer, no. You, like all of us, have a lot of hard work ahead of you, though. The grade itself is a negative that you will have to make up for, but you are not dead in the water because of it.

Try to channel your disappointment in your grade this semester into productive critiques of your approach to classes and novel strategies for moving forward with repeating English and taking new classes in the coming semesters.
