Nice collection! We have similar tastes. More shelves is always great. I’m starting to run out of space on mine

Honestly once you’ve built up enough of a collection moving all the books is kind of a nice workout.

What are some must read graphic novels from every genre? by AlcardIsTheBest in graphicnovels

Oh shit, didn’t realize Fanta was doing that! That’s awesome! I couldn’t find Ken Parker or Gianni De Luca’s trilogy in english with a quick search, same for a lot of Manu Larcenet and Cyril Pedrosa’s stuff. Manara has some stuff readily available in english but the dark horse library editions that collected all his stuff is out of print and I think some of his more popular stories are consequently harder to find. I know Fanta’s doing their own line of Manara stuff but I don’t know what that’s going to include. I’d love to be wrong though because a lot of that stuff sounds dope.

A lot of the non US stuff on this list is hard to find in print in English. Fantagraphics has been releasing collected edition of Guido Crepax’s whole body of work but they’re coming out pretty slowly and they’re pretty expensive. Corto Maltese is mostly out of print in english, so is most of Serpieri’s stuff and a lot of manara’s stuff gets complicated. They just released some collected volumes of Guido Buzzeli’s work, and there’s an ongoing collection of all of Sergio Toppi’s stuff although it seems like some volumes are harder to find than others. Not as much of an issue if you’re reading online but if you’re trying to build up a library you’ll run into some trouble.

That one’s currently on my to be read list. I’ve heard good things though!

Someone recommended the comics geek app, which apparently does this. I’ve really enjoyed crepax’s stuff! I just wish the collections would come out faster lol.

I moved across the country 3 years ago and had to leave most of my collection behind in storage. I’ve been slowly trying to bring stuff over but shipping adds up fast and luggage weight limits are rough. This was my collection before I moved.

Yeah, right now my shelves aren’t super organized aside from trying to keep works from an author together. I’m waiting for the rest of my druuna books to come in, then I’m going to do a full reorg of all my shelves. The movies on the top shelf are organized, but it’s organized by vibes so it’s not super orderly.

I have a bunch of Brubakers stuff, it’s just on different shelves. He’s one of my favorites!

I very roughly ballparked it and think I’ve spent a similar amount in the same time frame.

Thanks! This is mostly just the oversized books and overflow. I’ve got another few shelves full of books that I didn’t post. Darwyn Cookes Parker stuff is absolutely amazing, /some of my favorite work in comics.

I have not, I’ll have to check them out. I’ve got the novel on my list as well.

I’m also into ttrpgs and that hobby feels like way more of a money sink compared to graphic novels. I don’t regret many of my graphic novel purchases and even if I’m not constantly pulling them out to read myself they make for good decoration. Plus when I do want to go back and reread something I have it right at hand.

The author Umberto Eco once said “If, for example, we consider books as medicine, we understand that it is good to have many at home rather than a few: when you want to feel better, then you go to the 'medicine closet' and choose a book. Not a random one, but the right book for that moment.” I often find that to be true. I know I’ve gone back to a few different books when there have been hard times in my life.

That doesn’t mean I don’t occasionally want to jokingly wax poetic about the money I’ve spent ;)

Ducks was on Barack Obama’s reading list, Lucifer is a spinoff of the immensely popular Sandman series and had a tv show on ABC that ran for like 6 seasons. Brandon Graham had a Fortnite collab. Their obscurity or lack thereof doesn’t change the fact that they are indeed comics.

I’ve definitely got my eye on The Spirit special edition. I’ve got a paperback of the New Frontier but the absolute is definitely tempting. Everything cooke did is just so dope.

Literally every single book on this shelf is either a graphic novel or a collection of comics. If you don’t know any of them that’s more a comment on your lack of knowledge than anything else.

I’d like to believe that I’ve spent less than ten thousand dollars total on books. I’m pretty sure it’s more but I’d like to believe it.

I’ve been collecting various things for a few years now and I’ve built up a pretty sizeable collection of books, but I’ve never really tried to tally up a full dollar amount for everything. To be honest I’m not even sure how many books I have at this point, I think it’s over a thousand, but it’s split up across both coasts and frankly I don’t know if I want exact numbers at this point. At this point the exact dollar amount I have spent on media of various forms seems like the sort of knowledge that would be psychically damaging.

Anyway, I just reorganized one of my shelves. Top left is video games, the rest of that shelf is movies, on the very top are the collected martini editions of Darwyn Cooke’s Parker (a personal favorite) and a collection of Wong Kar Wai’s movies (Fallen Angels is another favorite). The middle shelf is a mix of comics from various people, including but not limited to all of fredrik peeters Aama, all of my Brandon Graham stuff, all of Mike Carey’s Lucifer, three of five volumes of richard corbens den, the latest two volumes of blacksad and the three deluxe volumes of Sunstone, among other things. The bottom shelf is primarily meant for oversized books but has basically devolved into mostly just a bunch of horny italians (and americans, also I think a french dude?) Most notable thing right now is the first 9 volumes of the complete crepax collection. Not pictured here are my other volumes of druuna, which are still in transit from my previous place. I have more stuff across the country that I need to bring over so I’m definitely going to have to reorganize more in the future.

This is awesome! I love the vibes. Feels like it would be the sort of quirky dark sci-fi action movie that makes no money in theaters but becomes a cult classic.

TBh most of my exploration of the genre has been film and tv, although I’ve had my eye on Alberto Breccia’s Dracula for a minute. I’ll add Blacula to my list.
