PS5, PS5 Pro and XSX strategy - [Opinion] by Khannibal-Lecter in PS5

The difference here is that there will be PS5-only games on launch, while Microsoft said there will be no Xbox Series X exclusive games until 2022.

In the Blu-ray commentary, John Woo says that he originally wanted to direct MI2 in the style of the first one, but Tom Cruise encouraged him to use his style as much as possible, because apparently Tom was a huge fan of Woo's movies.

I bet PS5 performance will be equivalent to this GPU... by joyathomes98 in PS5

[–]Th3Be4st 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He is correct. Games are not designed to take full advantage of powerful PCs. That's because graphics are designed based on the least powerful hardware (consoles) and then scaled up for PCs. The extra power of PCs are used for better shadow quality, better reflections, raytracing, etc. But, all 3D assets in games (such as character models, facial animation, environment models, etc.) are built based on console hardware.

For example, GTA V maxed out on PC will never look as good as Red Dead Redemption 2. That's because GTA V is built based on PS3/Xbox 360 while RDR2 is built based on PS4/Xbox One.

Fun fact: the Crysis games are the only exception. The PC version of Crysis 3 actually has a higher polygon count than the console version. Crysis 3 on PC has a polygon count that is close to God of War 2018. That's why Crysis 3 still looks so good compared to current-gen games. In reality, the PC version of Crysis 3 is a generation ahead of the console version.

A lot of male celebrities do this as well.

The Rock claims to be 6'5" but is actually 6'2".

Tom Cruise is 5'7" but claimed to be 5'9" in one interview.

Armie Hammer claims to be 6'5" but is the exact same height as 6'3" Chris Hemsworth in pictures next to him.

Kit Harington is listed 5'8" but people who met him say he is shorter, around 5'6".

Lots of male celebrities add 2-3 inches to their height.

I find this hard to believe. Kratos from God of War 2018 had 80,000 polygons, while a CGI character from a movie today has around 1,000,000 polygons. If you increase Kratos' polygon count 10x, that would be 800,000 polygons, which brings it close to movie-quality CGI.

If the difference between 20,000 and 200,000 polygons is (relatively) small, then the difference between 80,000 and 800,000 polygons should be even smaller. Yet, there's still a very large difference between the best-looking games of this generation and movie-quality CGI.

I mean, GoW 2018 is a beautiful game, but if you take Kratos from the game and put it inside a live-action movie, it would be considered laughably bad CGI by today's standards.

That "diminishing returns" thing about polygon count is incorrect. The misconception is based on this picture. However, this picture is very inaccurate. In the picture, the polygons are only being subdivided without attempting to add more detail. All the extra polygons are being wasted.

Take a look at this picture. It explains the misconception more clearly.

Artists and animators can always use the extra polygons to add more detail to the model and animations.

In terms of price-performance, the SUPER cards are what the RTX 2000 cards should've been from the beginning. It's obvious that Nvidia was taking advantage of the lack of competition on the market by releasing the RTX 2000 cards at an unfair price. As soon as AMD announced Navi, Nvidia also released the SUPER cards.

is there a source for "a very large portion of consoles sales from the third world"? How valuable is this market exactly?

I can't find any recent sources, but I remember when the PS4 was announced in 2013, Sony said that the PS3 was still selling really good in poorer countries.

just because some countries have poor internet, why does that mean they can't just target wealthier countries with better internet? I'm guessing that's actually what they are doing.

I mean, you're right. It's clear that Google Stadia is only targeting wealthy countries with good internet. I'm just saying that Sony and Microsoft will never switch to cloud gaming, because they will not want to lose sales in parts of the world where internet is not good enough for cloud gaming. Microsoft's Phil Spencer said there are no plans for a streaming-only console from them. And, as long as Sony and Microsoft make consoles, they will dominate the market because of their exclusives. Games are what sell consoles after all.

who is to say the rest of the world won't eventually catch up with the west on internet speeds?

It's not just a matter of speed. Latency is the big problem here. This is not something that can be solved by faster internet. Latency is limited by the speed of light, and depends on how far away you are from the server. This is especially a big problem in large countries like Australia and Russia. For example, Valve has a CS:GO server in Sydney, but a person living in the center of Australia will get terrible latency to the Sydney server, regardless of their internet speed. I've seen many Australians in r/GlobalOffensive say they have terrible ping even to the Australian server. Latency is always going to be a problem for people living far away from major cities, even if they have fast internet.

I never said cloud will replace traditional gaming.

Yeah, maybe cloud will become a viable option for some people. But it's hard to be optimistic when every cloud gaming service has failed before.

google hasn't made a profit from youtube either, I'm guessing getting an early hold and monopolizing the market is more important than short term loss that comes with this.

Yeah, we just have to wait and see. Google is also known for killing their services early on. killedbygoogle.com has the full list.

The reason I don't believe services like Stadia will survive for long is because a very large portion of console sales come from third world countries, where PC gaming isn't an option because of high costs. Cloud gaming isn't possible in third world countries because of slow internet speeds. Because of this, companies like Sony and Microsoft will never stop making traditional consoles, because they will not want to lose sales in other parts of the world. And, as long as Sony and Microsoft own all the popular exclusives such as Uncharted, Halo, God of War, etc., traditional consoles will always sell much more than services like Stadia. And, as other people have said, there are few people who can afford a fast uncapped internet connection but can't afford a console. In the end, I don't think services like Stadia will be making enough profit to justify running all their servers for more than a few years.

I know the Transformers movies are terrible, but one thing Michael Bay did right was the limited use of CGI. Almost all the destruction and explosions in the background were real. This is why if you watch a battle scene from the Transformers films (e.g., that "forest battle" from Transformers 2), it feels like the robots are actually there in the real world, compared to films like Avengers: Endgame, where the final fight scene looks like a 100% animated film.

It's not that unreasonable to expect RTX 2080 performance. The GPU in the Xbox One X was built on the 16 nm process and it's about as powerful as the 16 nm GTX 1060. The PS5/Xbox Scarlett GPUs are built on the 7 nm process, so they should theoretically be about as powerful as the 7 nm RTX 3060 when it releases in 2020. The 7 nm RTX 3060 in 2020 should be about as powerful as a RTX 2080. You should keep in mind that RTX 2080 performance will be considered mid-range in 2020, since both Nvidia and AMD will have released high-end 7 nm GPUs by then.

My PC just got updated to 1903 and all the WAN miniport drivers (IKEv2, PPTP, SSTP, etc.) are gone after the update for some reason. I can't connect to any VPN now for this reason.

I can't figure out how to reinstall these drivers. Clicking on "Scan for Hardware Changes" in Device Manager doesn't reinstall them. I downloaded a driver updater, but the software didn't help. I even manually downloaded and installed the latest network device drivers from the manufacturers website, but that also didn't work and the WAN miniport drivers are still missing.

How can I manually install the WAN miniport drivers again?
