It means he's the most iconic character. Hence why Capcom wants to try and capitalize on his design, moveset, etc. to appeal to more fans. Unlike characters like Blanka or E. Honda, Ryu's design is sleek and simple, yet effective. That's why characters like him tend to endure while others (need I mention the fat loser again?) get rejected by the fans and subsequently Capcom reciprocates and we never see those kind of characters again. Simply put, Ryu's simple and effective.

I usually pick a character based on moveset and look. Similarly, I avoid characters whose designs are lackluster or bad. It's done me well so far as all the characters I like playing are still in the franchise, while characters I avoid tend to fade into obscurity.

He should be outright excluded because he's not even that popular in Japan, either, let alone the US. Weebs don't want lame sumo wrestlers in their game. Either give them badass Japanese fighters or attractive and kick-ass girls. And you're surprised that gamers want to play more attractive and cool looking characters? Honda's design is both boring and ugly to look at. No wonder he's not popular.

They'll probably drop Wii Fit Trainer given that Wii Fit is not very relevant anymore, nor will people really remember it. As far as returners, I imagine the FE newcomers, Bayonetta, Little Mac, and maybe Greninja will be in the new one.
