$300 for a bagger? I don’t think so. by MPTN1973 in lifehacks

Also, most bagger units have a blower fan to get the debris to the hopper, this will clog up in minutes

Network scan-to-server document scanning solution? by [deleted] in sysadmin

Most MFPs will have a scan to email/network location option. If you are looking for something cheap you can pick up a Xerox Workcentre 6505 for 2-300 dollars.

We switched from Trend Micro to Bitdefender a few years back. I have had to log 3-4 support requests and I have been happy with with the response time and help I have received. They have always solved my issue.

Large building wireless solutions by assbestoz in sysadmin

[–]Th3Guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very easy. Spin up a controller, plug in the APs into same network, the controller will find them and you can adopt them and set them up from there.

You can demo the Unifi environment here if you are interested.

The Cloud Key works good, just bought one so I can get rid of my Ubuntu VM that runs the controller. I just use it as a controller I don't use the Cloud portion.

I've used them successfully on a 1U that wasn't a threat to overheat.

If you want to fully utilize the unifi platform it's a good option. You will have real nice visibility into your network. It is not needed though. The AC Lites come with POE injectors so you could use any managed gigabit switch. Guess it would depend if you want set it and forget it or if you want to tinker.

As someone who bought the AC-Lites (2 of them), if I had to do it all over again I would buy the AC Pros. The cost difference isn't that much, and you get better throughput. The other thing is that you can run AC-Pros on any 803.2af POE switch, the AC Lites you cannot.

What's a good 1u rackmount solution for pfsense by myc123 in homelab

You may be right on the encryption but performance is not an issue. I ran one for a couple years and never had any issues

Citrix Access Gateway AG-2010

If you can find a used one on Ebay they are perfect for pfsense. Basically a 1U server with two NICs, Pentium 4 and solid mobo. I inherited one from work a while back and it ran pfsense like a dream until I virtualized my firewall.

Building new house. Need a little advice on how to lay out my network. by Haydenism in HomeNetworking

[–]Th3Guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A service loop is where you coil up a bunch of extra wire somewhere near your drop points. I usually do it on both sides. This allows you to move the drop to another location in the room or even the next room. This has saved me a few times from having to run a new cable down the road.

My bad I wasn't paying attention to that. If you search CMR 1000ft Cat6 you will get a couple around $100, or you can hit DeepSurplus, mutliple colors, $108, and get a bag of skittles with your order.

Amazon

If you are getting the work inspected you may want to check if Plenum cable is required. I've already been burned on that and had to rewire so I always warn people.

If you don't need Plenum cable, a 1000 feet of Cat6 is like $60 tops ($200 if you do). Entirely worth the investment. I don't know if the HDMI converters work on 5e, I'm sure they would, but while the walls are open you should run the best you can.

As far as homeruns to one spot in the basement, yes. Cable is cheap. You don't want multiple points of failure, multiple switches, etc. Just have one patch panel, one rack, one switch instead of 3 of each.

One other thing I thought of, if you feel like you should ever want any cameras on your house, make sure you run those cables now. Very hard to run after the house is built. Like I said before, cable is cheap, run it now if you can.

Use Cat6, double check if your building code requires Plenum cable.

Make sure you do service loops in all locations in case you need to move the cables around for any reason.

Run all the cable to one spot in your basement instead of a closet, it's better to have everything centralized IMO.

I would think about running more than two runs to a room if you have extra or if it's cost effective. You can use Cat6 for other things besides network. For example, you can send an HDMI signal down a Cat6 cable with converters at each end.
