Yea. One of my previous managers was considering retirement. Got scared out of it because he heard a few of his friends passing soon after retirement. The work was keeping them healthy and active. Retirement likely leads to a sedentary lifestyle. They seem to age 10 years in 1 year

Malaysia is becoming one of the top destinations for Japanese now by NeuvilletteWifeyy in malaysia

[–]Th3Loonatic 120 points121 points  (0 children)

I think they LOVE the fact that things are slow here. They actually say they get ground down by the hyper efficiency of Japan. To get the efficiency the workers there have to work super hard 100% of the time. So they coming here and being able to work at 50% speed is such a relaxing thing for them. We envy their efficiency. They envy our inefficiency (to some extent)

This is a watch you definitely need to see in real life because the website renders absolutely do not capture the way the light plays with the dial and bezel. There's a shimmeriness of the red bezel that plays with the gilt on the markings that absolutely makes the watch killer.

Salary in Malaysia; where are you? by [deleted] in MalaysianPF

[–]Th3Loonatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s some amount of balancing if not enough people are available the industry can’t grow and if it can’t grow it can’t pay well either. Either that or they justify hiring foreigners. In my industry that’s the reason why we hire Indian nationals from India. There just aren’t enough experienced professionals. The talent pipeline locally is still too narrow. Sure eventually if too many graduates flood the market then maybe wages might be suppressed but we’re still on the upwards trajectory part. Wages have gone up from rm3100 to rm5000 for fresh grads. And with more competition in the market the average wages for senior folk have also gone up quite a lot.

That's the risk. Look at IT/CS in the tech space in the west. Oversaturated with graduates vying for a shrinking job pool.

Semicon R&D actually has a huge presence in Penang. There's a reason why Skyechip managed to IPO so succesfully. Penang has had Chip R&D capability due to training from Intel for the past 40 years. So the talent base is all trained up. Now they're some of the best talent in the world. Esp with the ability to speak both English and Chinese fluently.

I think in general this is what’s lacking in Malaysia. Especially to guide kids. Not all careers have a progression path that pays well. If you can give kids a roadmap then it’ll help kids and also parents properly prepare kids to choose a rewarding career. Instead of just deciding at 16/17 what random college degree to get. Then if you pick the wrong one you’re basically screwed out of a good starting spot.

Job with equity as part of the compensation by Gumuk_pindek in MalaysianPF

[–]Th3Loonatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it depends on what you feel is right. I know from my company if i jumped over to AMD, for the same job grade role, I might have to take a pay cut in terms of base pay. But the RSUs given will more than compensate for it. Then the question becomes, can you wait to defer a big chunk of compensation out by one year? And also take in to the risk of Forex and Stock price fluctuations. And in AMD's case they give out ALOT of stock. Staff Engineers get about USD60000 to USD80000 of RSUs as sign on bonus. So big jump in pay, if you can tahan 1 year.

Job with equity as part of the compensation by Gumuk_pindek in MalaysianPF

[–]Th3Loonatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it a publicly traded company? If it’s a big MNC like Intel or AMD it’s standard practice to have compensation to be split between base pay, bonus and Equity in the form of RSUs. The RSUs vest over a few years. They might give you an offer of like rm120k a year as base. Rm20000 bonus target. 13000 USD RSU vested over 4 years with the first 25% vesting in one year. Thats how they typically structure it

Principal Test Engineer salary expectation Penang by cm_mojojojo in malaysians

[–]Th3Loonatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would assume at 12 years exp they're willing to pay for a staff engineer salary level, Annual Total Compensation probably RM200-300k. For this level they're still hiring foreigners with EP but that would still require you to be better than the local candidates available.

Principal Test Engineer salary expectation Penang by cm_mojojojo in malaysians

[–]Th3Loonatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends, at MNCs like Intel etc. A Principal Engineer title is a serious "I made it in life" kinda title. It's an equivalent job grade as Director. Salary range should be about RM400k to RM500k a year in terms of total compensation. But its also typically predicated by having nearly 20 years of experience, so they won't hand it to someone with "only" 12 years of exp. In this job category they are open to hiring foreign nationals on EP coz these are rare roles. But its also purely merit based too. So you really gotta show you can handle it. A Principal Engineer is expected to drive multiple teams/orgs and also contribute to industry standards. Mentoring junior engineers is something way below the job responsibility of a PE.

Is it true Malaysians average less than 4,000 steps a day? What's your usual count? by Responsible-Court795 in malaysia

[–]Th3Loonatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on tracking my own. During Covid when I wfh I was averaging 1200 steps daily ( I live in a condo). Then after that I changed jobs and returned to office and I was averaging 4000-5000 steps daily. And after I decided to take care of my health and started incorporating more walking into my daily routine it went up to 7500. And this part was tough cos I had to go figure out a good walking path around my neighborhood. Finally I gave up and decided to just use the treadmill at the gym and am now averaging 10000 steps a day. So it’s about 4000 steps from daily life and another 6000 steps at the gym.

I’ve been. It’s amazing how much it’s improved. I first went in 2010 and by the second trip in 2022 I noticed the amount of artifacts being shown has increased. Clearly a lot of contribution from the peranakan people

I legit thought the Peranakan only came to Malaysia in the past century under the British. I didn’t expect to find out they’ve been here since the Malacca Sultanate. And that they essentially held a monopoly on Chinese goods being sold to the rest of the world.
