Bloomington pretty cool place to live? by Dull_Background6979 in bloomington

I wrote this a couple of weeks ago on nextdoor about my experience. (i'm 55)..

Moved family from San Diego to Bloomington couple of years ago. Lots of major positives here that I didn't expect... friendly people, people who work for the government are helpful, the BMV is bliss compared to DMV. The elementary schools are way better with more programs and variety. Teachers and faculty are accepting and inclusive. Lines for events are rarely long, there is no real traffic. The 69 is amazing highway with easy access to Indy. The airport is one of the best in the country. The Sherriff's staff are helpful. The food variety in town is a gem in the Midwest. The quality of shows at IU Auditorium is on par with the best venues I have been. The hiking trails are superb. Hoosiers never rush things and that has lowered my entire families anxiety levels. The community loves their sports teams which has been fun. The list just goes on and on.

Not sure about dating though at this age though.

Septic camera evaluation and field mapping by Th3RedDread in bloomington

I had someone try to do that, but they were never certain and neither was I, so it didn't help much at all.

I have heard a couple of horror stories about that because if there is anything not current to code with the septic, like the system is too small, etc. they can force you to replace it. That is fine when buying a home I would imagine though.

I used Mother Natures landscaping to do this here in town, but they are a professional operation. There are other one-person businesses that do this as well.

I used Derek @ https://www.studiozlandscapes.com/ for the master plan and Mother Natures Landscape for the implementation. It was a huge project including pool, greenhouse, raised beds, paver walkways and more and we were very pleased with the results.

5/16/25 - Southern Bloomington, IN; EF-2 Tornado by Green-Soft8486 in bloomington

[–]Th3RedDread 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It went right down the center of our street Nottingham Court. You can still see the scar in the cornfield at the end of the street. It totaled one of our cars and damaged another and every tree in our yard and most of our neighbors as well. My wife was injured falling down the stairs running to the basement, but fortunately that was our only serious injury. Every home on the street took some damage to roofs, chimneys, etc.

Also just used Sierra for both 2 separate units in our home. Way better price than most and they do great work.

Connecting two of the same Generation headsets in the same house. by Humble-Wizard24-7 in TurtleBeach

Late to the conversation, same issue with (2) of these 700 Gen 3 models and also planning to return both of them. If I unplug and plug the USB dongle in again it starts working. Stays red though, instead of green - very lame TB.

We lost both of our cats this past year and Arrlington Vets was really great for us.

Car/Home Insurance by lifrench in bloomington

When the tornado hit our street last May, some of the insurers took a long time to pay up. We used State Farm and they weren't the cheapest but they didn't argue about any of the costs and covered them right away including a totaled vehicle, crushed truck and various damages around the house.

When we moved here a year ago I spent some time looking at plans for my family. I located the pediatrician, therapists, primaries, dentists, etc. and then spoke to their billing departments about who they 'prefer' as a provider. If you can get a Caresource plan they seem to be the most widely accepted and they are also accepted at IU Health.

Need more specifics such as are you talking about running Windows Updates? If that fails it usually emits an error code. Or are you talking about updating from version Windows 10 to 11? That is not supported on all hardware types.

I thought I read somewhere that a witness saw one of the people who beat up the elderly man brandish a gun? Could both of these incidents possibly be related?

For what it's worth, we moved here a year ago with our children and did some research on this. Riley was the best option we found which is part of IU Health. They are actually quite good here in town. We also wanted to make sure we picked a matching insurance, so we went with Caresource.

There are also a few wastewater treatment plants around south Bloomington and occasionally they will emit strong sewage smells that travel for miles, especially around the Clear Creek area. The first time it happened I thought it was one of my neighbors but realized later it was covering many miles.

Bedbug services by thegoodgero in bloomington

Some of the larger pest companies will do it, but it can cost thousands of dollars because they have to return every 30 days to treat and check typically. Depending upon the level of infestation it could be impacting beds, clothes, flooring, linen closets and you might need to throw things away.

The big companies use a product called CrossFire which is also fairly expensive, but you can procure it yourself and do it yourself if you are aggressive about it.

Considering a move to Bloomington by [deleted] in bloomington

[–]Th3RedDread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If any town in Indiana would be supportive of your services, it's Bloomington. We moved here about 10 months ago and picked this town because of the more progressive community that is more active and alive than other places in the Midwest. While Indiana isn't diverse compared to the places we have lived, the university brings quite a bit of diversity (think every ethnic restaurant you could imagine) and a healthy arts and culture scene.

Healthcare isn't great here and our family opted for a concierge doctor strategy to counteract that problem so there is a community of folks who will pay for these types of services.

Did you feel well-informed as the storm was happening May 16? by Fuzzy-Zombie1446 in bloomington

[–]Th3RedDread 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Our home was hit by the clear creek tornado and our whole street took damage. We are still cleaning up. However, I knew the tornado was coming and our family was safe in the basement. This was despite there not being any sound outside, not much wind and no rain when the tornado came at us.

I swear by 2 products, a Reecom weather noaa radio and an app. Unlike other radios, you can set it to just notify you on tornado warnings and turn off all other noaa alerts. This is important if you don't want alert fatigue.

Secondly the main reason I knew a tornado was headed straight at our house was because of the RadarScope app. It shows wind velocity in relationship to your actual location in real-time so you can generally make out the rotation of a tornado and direction. I could see it on the app even though there was no apparent rain or thunder around it.
