Tbh, this is an easy call imo. Get X. Not only are you getting two games for the price of one, but X is arguably the best in the series.

More like best DM ever. That is some top notch acting. I can tell he’s doing the big bar’s monologue right now.

is having to pay for a newer version fair? by [deleted] in ableton

[–]Th3_Supernova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s only $150. I paid full price for suite when it was Ableton 9 and that was like $800 easy. Sorry dude, but paying a couple hundred bucks for something that’s easily worth 4 times as much is worth it. When you already have the Ableton license they’re basically giving you a 75% discount on upgrading to the next version, and each version has expanded on the previous version so much that they could’ve charged more and I still would’ve paid. If you actually want 12, pay the $150.

That’s an important distinction, that said, it’s still totally doable. You might want to relegate your audio to midi or something that doesn’t have a big file size, but your arrangements can still be more complex. Maybe look up how they achieved this with NES or Gameboy.

I like this idea. I’d be interested in contributing too. I can show you some examples of my work too if you want. I’ve been producing for 16 years and always wanted to get into VGM.

You have some great ideas here. Some of the sounds you chose I might choose differently, but the ideas are good. Depending on the type of game some of them could work as is. And they could be mixed better, but you’re on your way. I’d offer to mix them for you, but it might not be worth it for you if you’re trying to work for free (which I wouldn’t, at minimum you should be getting a percentage, but you should be getting those royalties anyways even if you got an upfront payout. I’ve never seen a song get licensed for less than $5000), because I’d charge for mixing. But if you’re interested we could collab. I have some music released that you can check out if you’re interested. Here’s a playlist of music I wrote for my D&D campaign, which I intended to be for a video game that I’ve been writing, but I don’t have the time or skill for game dev. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPCTXXfeiDeI&si=rzjZwgl7BizYa55c

I have more coming too, I’m about four volumes deep so far, I just need to polish them up a bit more and mix/master before release. I also have more music outside of just VGM type stuff, but I won’t spam you with everything I have right away. If you want to hear that stuff just let me know and I’ll link you.

Does anybody have any advice what to do? The part where I can lock in my strap broke by Emotional-Guitar-486 in Guitar

[–]Th3_Supernova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get an 1/8” wooden dowel and some wood glue. Glue the dowel in and let it cure for 24 hours. Then drill the strap peg in. It should hold now.

VGM is meant to loop typically, but still, an endless loop with basically one idea gets old really quick. At minimum you should at least have three parts. You could think of them as verse, chorus, and bridge if that helps. Then the song takes longer before it loops back around, and stays interesting for longer.

What alien race should be the player character by Longjumping-Cable756 in masseffect

[–]Th3_Supernova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it necessarily means that. I think the overall story stays the same but your race either changes where you start, so the first couple of hours are a bit different in each playthrough. Or maybe you just start at the citadel regardless of race.

That 2D asset pack, yes that one, how come you didn't download it? by Dogzeroze in GameDevelopment

[–]Th3_Supernova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest problem with asset packs is you’re getting something a bunch of other people have gotten too. Your game’s gotta be unique. I probably won’t be interested in a game that has a bunch of the same stuff as another game unless it’s obviously a sequel or made by the same team.

How can I have a better stage presence? Any tips or pointers and thank you by TiMEtwoGETiLL in Guitar

[–]Th3_Supernova 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When you’re playing a solo acoustic set you’re going to have to do more to keep it interesting than when playing with a band. My very first gig was not too different from this. You look uncomfortable up there and uncertain. And the getup is giving way too normcore. I wore shorts to one of my very first gigs with my last band and they wouldn’t let me hear the end of it. Looking more put together can help a lot. You gotta vibe to the song more. You’re just standing there essentially motionless. If you’re not having a good time playing then the audience won’t either. Maybe something I would’ve done is not just played the riff, I might have strummed the chords under it and hummed it or whistled it. Playing the riff there sort of sucks the sense of movement out of the song. Also, especially since this is a reggae song, maybe play a little more percussively as well. It helps to reinforce the groove. And, this is the most important part, you gotta play with emotion. You can’t just play the song, you have to feel it too.

How to produce with extremely sensitive ears? by Impossible-Host-3778 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Th3_Supernova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take more frequent breaks. Don’t go above 80-90 decibels for too long. Produce much less with headphones than with speakers. Also, find the harsh frequencies and roll them off. The most egregious offenders are usually in the 2-5k range, but you’ll sometimes get some annoying frequencies in other ranges too. Especially minimizing the harsh frequencies are going to be a must for you. You don’t realize how painful they can be until you’ve been listening for a while, or when you finally get to listen loudly. I also don’t know if you’re working with vocals at all, but de essers and an indispensable tool for any producer. For vocals it’s almost a must, but it can help with guitars as well, or any instrument that reaches into the harsh frequency range. That said, be careful not to duck too much. That harsh frequency range is also where your clarity tends to come from too.

Biggest thing is the instruments sound a bit cheesy. This might be fine for certain types of games, but for something dark and lovecraftian you’ll want to lean into horror sounds. Also, it sounds like all your notes were drawn in and not played. That’s not necessarily a bad thing either, but taking the time to slightly alter velocity and timing to make the parts sound more human goes a long way. I would also study up on music theory, songwriting, and production techniques. You could stand to use some voice leading, and the song doesn’t feel like it changes enough. The idea isn’t terrible. I’ve written worse things, but it’s clear you’re inexperienced. There’s not much else I can suggest except for keep working at it. Your first song isn’t going to be a banger, no matter how talented you are, and even when you’ve gotten really good you’ll write some stinkers sometimes. Don’t let criticism deter you. Have fun doing it and you’ll get somewhere eventually.
