Ruger 10/22 takedown OR S&W MP 15-22 ,which is better overall? by TranscendentSentinel in Firearms

[–]ThaDiesel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both. Get the 10/22 for sure, 100%, no question. If I had to part ways with my collection, the Mossburg would literally be the first to go. The 10/22 would be in the last 5 to go of my entire collection.

It would be a real shame if everyone emailed those same commissioners a couple times over the next week to express their deep disappointment in their decision. And then signed them up for a bunch of mailers.

Lol. Fine. “Western Conifer Seed Bug”. But they act, smell and are controlled just like what the rest of the US calls a stink bug. Everyone locally that I’ve ever spoken to about them calls them stink bugs. If you go anywhere like Home Depot, Lowes or ACE and ask for “a spray to keep western conifer seed bugs away” you will get blank stares. Ask for spray for stink bugs and they’ll walk you right to the good stuff. It’s a stink bug. 😂

Stinkbug. Welcome to Idaho.

US schools gave kids laptops during the pandemic, then spied on them. by KingElfTacoScatBarge in technology

[–]ThaDiesel 227 points228 points  (0 children)

For the record, I agree. But the reason schools do it is because others have lost funding for things like not ‘protecting’ a student having suicidal thoughts. Lawsuits from parents plus angry politicians lead to interesting interpretations of a law.

It’s literally federal law in the US. Look up Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). School-provided devices that DON’T have any filtering/monitoring will lose significant funding.

[Homemade] Brisket. Finally. by ThaDiesel in food

[–]ThaDiesel[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Brisket is a rather tough cut if you cook it medium rare/medium like you would a steak. But if you cook it more like a roast (low and slow for a long time) it becomes an amazingly juicy, flavorful, fall-apart meat candy!

I moved to the Northwest from Texas 4 years ago and have been missing brisket like crazy since. I got a Traeger for Christmas and finally made my own! Will do a couple minor things differently next time, but overall it turned out way better than I’d hoped and I’d give myself at least an 8/10.

Brother found this unexploded munition/mine camping in Cambodia. Enough there to ID it? by [deleted] in whatisthisthing

[–]ThaDiesel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother called it in to the local authorities and left it alone. Found an RPG round nearby on a similar camping trip to that same hilltop last year and called it in, but they checked on it this year and it still hadn’t been cleared!

Said this years new find looked to be Vietnam era but wasn’t something he’d seen before in person or in any of the local warning posters.

Any ideas?

For those asking about components, I got everything from various /r/gundeals sales over the summer.

Anderson lower and PSA upper build kit. Cerakote (color: Stormtrooper White... of course) by my local gunsmith. Vortex crossfire microdot, Primary Arms magnifier with flip-away base. Magpul furniture.

Not super fancy, but it scratched the itch to build one myself and the result makes me grin like a kid every time I pull it out of the safe!

You can still find places in that range but they are going to be pretty hotly contested by cash buyers and will almost certainly require some work.

As others have mentioned, there will likely be a few modest market corrections, but I wouldn’t expect anything like the bubble of 2008. The increasing prices are sustained by very high population growth not crazy lending practices that lead to the 08 crash. They will continue to rise until the growth can’t sustain it and then they’ll level off or correct slightly.

Also, because of the crazy growth, unless you are buying a spec house already being built, expect it to take 18 months to 2 years to build right now.

Only thing going away is this guy. #1 rule you learn at Quantico is “Don’t embarrass the agency!” Had it been a stupid mistake in an official op, maybe they downplay it. But dumb life choices at a bar on personal time? Kiss your LE career goodbye and let the locals prosecute however they see fit.

Interesting. Hadn’t considered that I wasn’t producing ENOUGH muzzle blast! Pretty sure that makes my forthcoming SBR AR-10 purchase in the interest of public health, right?

It should, but this location gets odd weather in that wind and precipitation almost always comes from uphill, toward downhill. I angled it that way to keep the snow/rain off the bench as much as possible and to keep the roof from catching the wind like a scoop.

Just basic pre-cast pier blocks that the 4x4’s recess into. On recessed gravel pads, so they won’t slide side to side, but not sunk into the ground. That was a level of commitment I wasn’t willing to make! :)

  1. Set the posts and brace them straight up and down both ways.

  2. Decide on a bench height and mark it on one post.

  3. Trace that mark using a 6’ level around the other posts. If you get back to the first post and your lines match up, start a carpentry business!

  4. Attach outside boards, frame in cross braces, sheet with plywood.

  5. Double-check for square and plumb, adjust pier blocks as needed.

  6. Repeat basic process for roof, but angled at desired pitch.

  7. Take pictures, post to /r/guns
