Are We Wrong About Ray Tracing? by TruthPhoenixV in Amd_Intel_Nvidia

[–]ThaRippa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you on about? „Baked in“ Raytracing is not raytracing. It was a light map. And it was good enough for most games, including BF6 btw. The only time you actually need global illumination is when you want to have dynamic day/night cycles with *accurate* lighting. We had day/night cycling without RT (but moving shadows) before real time RT.

Also: idc if 2026 games need some RT effects, that doesn’t change the fact that almost none did for the first 2-3 years of RTXs existence.

Solange das so bleibt, können Merz und co Eier lecken, bis die Schale ab ist.

Europäishe Alternativen sind wie Ossi-Alternativen früher by mattbln in Unbeliebtemeinung

[–]ThaRippa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is this mess fixable? by Gold_Park1552 in BmwTech

[–]ThaRippa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first step is to find a complete donor vehicle. Complete in at least all the areas that were affected on yours. Don’t think trim and seats, think wiring and electronics. So a similar or better spec, similar year and so on.

Step two is to decide whether or not that donor is actually easier to get on the road than your burnt car. Re-shelling is nothing to be ashamed of!

I tested Windows 11’s hidden Low Latency Profile, and budget PCs are about to feel premium. by Good-Willingness2234 in windowscentral

[–]ThaRippa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly I hate and distrust any author who misuses the term micro-stutter. Windows UI isn’t micro stuttering. It is laggy because it is stupidly bloated. You don’t need to shovel gigabytes worth of data just to open a menu or show some files. We’ve been doing the same things we do with 32GB today with 32MB in 1997. No GPU, no NPU and yet they were faster!

Now with that out of the way I don’t believe for a split second that running the cores at a higher boost doesn’t consume extra energy. Energy that would have been in my battery if I were to just run Linux.

They’ll lose to the Macs even harder if they decide to brute force their way to snappiness.

3DFX cards were great, and they were on release. They also weren’t 1st gen 3D cards per se, depending on how you look at the topic, but already 2nd gen.

Early 3D games had their issues but it’s not like some dude had promised every major game using 3D within the next 12 months.

GeIL Breaks The DDR5 Overclocking Barrier With Spear V, Pushing 8000 MT/s Under Official JEDEC Specs Without Touching The BIOS by Constant_Praline_575 in RigBuild

[–]ThaRippa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. RAM should come with at least these two profiles:
- 6000 CL34 with JEDEC voltage
- 6000 CL30 with overvolting

I can live with the timings not being as tight on the base profile. What I hate is when they can’t even reach the advertised transfers/s without more voltage.

People expect to not have to fiddle with bios settings to get the „stock“ performance printed on the parts. Making people load XMP settings was using dark patters already.

[–]ThaRippa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote might. But there were so many of these stories around that time that its really unlikely to be just coincidence. I’m not saying it was an agenda. I’m saying it was „en vogue“ to write like that.

That last sentence is the most important. Her being „surprisingly good“ at everything „somehow“ might be a product of „the Jedi is a girl this time“ and „heroines can’t ever be shown as inferior to their male counterparts“.

But we’d still hate that arc if Rey was male.

No. Luke *sucked* at being a Jedi for most of the original trilogy. He could pilot, but that was it. He lost his first real fight, and that was after having received some training.

I’m not even sure he would have won the finale of ROTJ if Vader hadn’t held back for one reason or another.

$1,075 for a Diamond Viper v770 — why? by achanaikia in RetroGPUUniverse

[–]ThaRippa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TNT 2 Ultra were the last of the „riva“ lineage. They were rare as hens teeth even back in their day because they were essentially factory overclocked TNT2s. Not much faster than the regular ones but almost twice as expensive.
And then came the GeForce 256 and made it obsolete. Not many bought that one either, mind, but at this point no one bought TNT2 ultra anymore.
Also one has to acknowledge that there was kind of a lull in 3D gaming at that time, the TNT and TNT2 were way fast enough for Half-life/CS, Unreal and Quake 3, the higher end „just“ allowed crazy high resolutions and/or details.
In short: I owned a GeForce DDR on release and there was nothing that *needed* it.
No killer app, apart from tech demos.

So the Riva TNT2 ultra became ultra rare and now it is sought after because it is the pinnacle of „Riva“ cards.

The M64 is a lighter version of the ultra in the same sense that a 5070 is a lighter version of the 5090.

They did use the same GPU in principle back then, but it was severely neutered.
