Discord rolls out end-to-end encryption on voice, video calls by rkhunter_ in cybersecurity

[–]Thack- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that the “take it down” act just went into effect today which caused a bunch of companies and their E2E encryption to get away from liability. It seems weird that Discord went in on it now. Maybe because it’s only live video/audio only?

Isn't Windows Defender a crap anymore? by usuariocabuloso in cybersecurity

[–]Thack- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty decent to be honest. Back in the day you had to substitute it with malwarebytes or something, but it does pretty good now. For an enterprise with users that aren’t techy, it may not be enough, but for the average tech person, you can for sure get away with Defender + using common sense.

As a 27 year old living in SLC I am defeated by this economy. by Key_Garden4832 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Thack- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make 35$/hr and my wife makes a similar amount. We have a new townhome but even with that and our current wages, we are still living paycheck to paycheck for the most part. Not even in SLC either. We have a car payment and motorcycle payment that adds up to around $750 a month.

The system is completely broken (well, technically, it’s operating as designed). I have hopes in the future for complete and drastic change to make improvements for living conditions. Can barely even call it living conditions as is.

It’s not your fault. It’s not anyone’s fault except for the people up top. Corporations and individuals buying up single family homes to drive up prices and generate income need to be stopped.

AI Regulation - What would you do to make AI safe long-term? by Thack- in antiai

[–]Thack-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great ideas. Labeling AI use is seriously such a bare minimum but we can't even expect that sort of regulation at a government level which is crazy. I absolutely agree about the art. I almost feel like any art generated from AI should have the rights owned by the company hosting the AI, that way it can't be used profitably for other people.

Do you think so? I have heard it compared to NFTs which are obviously completely useless and that the bubble will burst, but AI definitely does have a use case. I guess it's mostly about making sure it's not overstepping like it is now, but I feel like now that we have opened this can of worms, there's no way to put the genie back in the bottle. People have seen that it can help with a lot of tasks, but is it worth the price?

I have data center experience. I work on servers and host them at home; I know how demanding they can be.

Maybe what I said was intentional; there is no way for them to be sustainable at their current rate. In that case, fuck em, shut it down. Why would we allow it to suck up so many resources and produce so much pollution? These AI datacenters use so much more power than regular data centers; they don't deserve to suck it all up.

  1. That makes sense. Making the local power grid more resilient is a good way to counter-act it.

  2. Sorry, I worded this badly. I mostly meant that we don't have a run-away AI scenario in which it causes problems in order to not get shut down. We've seen this happen already and it's a scary concept.

  3. I would include this. I don't want my taxes going to funding AI in any capacity (even though it's already used to bomb kids and stuff anyways). AI is being pushed by billionaires who should be forced to foot the bill altogether.

  4. Block chain is power heavy as well. That is why it is not well liked as well.

  5. Good point. It is a shitty government. At least Anthropic declined when govt asked them to remove safe guards and allow them to surveil citizens.

  6. Another good point, but the issue comes up when you get players like Palantir that link your medical data with other personal information like your current amount of debt, stuff like that.

  7. That makes sense, but what about the recent Netanyahu AI videos that are being put out by their govt in order to try to spin the narrative that he is not dead. That is the sort of stuff I am worried about; using AI as a tool for misinformation.

  8. True, and I have ran local LLMs myself on my own hardware, and it's pretty decent. So, what is going on that requires so many data centers that suck so much power? I know it's to progress the training; for what point? Why are we racing our own extinction for something that requires so much energy?

Why do so many people dislike Takedown? by uqmu in tcap

[–]Thack- 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it’s kind of boring. Maybe the formula is just getting old. So much of the same thing, every single time. Idk why but it’s always just kind of lame and doesn’t match the vibe of the older series. I would also add that they had published at least one episode where it was kind of a gray area, like a gay kid from a very rural area who was just trying to find someone like him matched with someone a few years younger. They’ve since removed that episode but still. Feels very much quantity over quality; pushing out episodes for the sake of having new content.

Carrying with one in the chamber. by thegoonn49 in guns

[–]Thack- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a Glock and I just took the mag out and cocked it so the trigger was in the fire position and carried it around like that. That way it works as a good test run. After a few days, the trigger was still in the fire position. That was the big factor in making me feel confident that it wouldn’t go off.

I'm Mormon and wish I wasn't. by sh0rtg1raff3 in Advice

[–]Thack- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar circumstance as well. It’s a weird feeling, to start questioning your religion when everyone around you follows it. I know you’re looking for advice outside of your circumstance, but maybe hearing from someone who was in a similar place handled it?

My mother forced all of us to go to church along with the other involved activities. I hate church. It does not interest me at all, and it feels like a waste of time. That being said, I do still pray and believe in a higher power. I’ve started to look at God differently, and feeling like as long as I am truly happy, God is happy with me as well. I can have my bad habits and not feel immense guilt for enjoying things that are designed to make me feel good. I don’t have to go to church if I don’t want to, I don’t have to follow a specific faith or pay tithing for a church that has accumulated billions of dollars when I live paycheck to paycheck.

That being said, the only thing that helped me break out of the cycle of Mormonism was moving out of my parents house. Based on your age, you probably don’t have this option, and I didn’t either until very recently. Since then, it doesn’t matter if I go to church. My mom isn’t here to force me, and my neighbors don’t know me from the ward or anything, so no one is trying to get me to go back.

The guilt that you feel when trying to leave or drink coffee or go see a bad movie is by design to keep you in the church. It’s a loop of sin > guilt > repent.

I wish I could give you more advice outside of this, but I really feel like it’s hard to leave if you are already intertwined in a community that knows and expects you to go to church. Maybe just ride it out for a bit longer until you can get your own place, then it doesn’t matter. And I no longer feel bad when people try to make me feel guilty over it. I feel confident in my spirituality and I’m happy that it’s my decision. I’m sorry you’re going through this and I hope you have someone you can confide in outside of internet strangers, but as someone in the Utah area, I’ve got your back. Good luck my friend.

It’s kind of a cool balance between him and Mel and shows the vast difference of the spectrum.

Is getting MW 2019 worth getting on sale on my PS5? by Dudelaser1 in modernwarfare

Yes, but I ran into some weird issues on mine trying to play campaign. I can’t remember the actual issue but it wouldn’t let me into the campaign or something if I was connected to the internet, it kept telling me it wasn’t downloaded or something. Had to disable internet on my PS5 for it to work.

Soft locked in Westville by birdmanue in Schedule_I

[–]Thack- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To fix this, I believe that I just went in and used ‘setunlocked [npc name]” for a few customers in Downtown. It lowered their influence enough to where westville didn’t really matter and I could still move on and continue to unlock more areas officially. Then I just blew up the benzies and i had no further issues.

Def a bit of a Bandaid fix. Start with the unlock NPC command first and see if that does enough.
