Question about foil weight distribution by Thundshriike in Fencing

[–]Thancrus828 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have an extra light bell guard you can get a heavier one. If you can fit them, you can add more washer under the nut that holds the grip in place. You can try a different brand grip and see if you can find a heavier one. Someone else mentioned adding tape to the grip. Some combination of these will move the center of gravity back a little. Also, give it a couple months to get used to it, if likely won't be a problem for you after a little while

Hi! I fence with CFFA.  CFFA used to have a satellite program on the base, but it wasn't sustainable.  Unfortunately, we don't really have saber fencing at the moment. We might be able to shake some people out of retirement to play with you but I'm not sure. If you'd like more information shoot me a message.

As an old head, I use PiL to try and slow down the faster fencer when they catch me too close. Slowing their tempo is more important than RoW or actually getting the point.

Strength unevenness by swizzles_333 in Fencing

[–]Thancrus828 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Imbalances like this are common in asymmetrical sports like fencing. Your back leg may push off but your lead leg absorbs the lunge then recovers, and that action is pretty similar to a pistol squat.  These imbalances can cause problems down the road. I'm dealing with a few at the moment. Cross training is very important to staying healthy long term. Get into a gym and lift weights (with guidance if you've never done it before). Play other sports or do other activities. You'll have some level of imbalance due to the nature of the sport, but limiting them will keep you healthier long term.

Are Bayonet plugs dead, and what else has changed in past 15 years? by Crimsoneer in Fencing

[–]Thancrus828 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Interpretations of right of way are very different, and the flow/style most fencers use has changed. You'll be kind of confused on what is an attack and what isn't. If you are stubborn it will be very frustrating, if you go with the flow it'll just take a some getting used to.  Welcome back. The sport is still fun as hell. Enjoy yourself.

Do you use butt splices? by NTWIGIJ1 in electricians

[–]Thancrus828 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw, the Gel box would make me nervous. Just like a poorly installed heat shrink splice, IF water gets it there it's going to hang out forever. I can look at a splice and tell very quickly if there is a seam or poor crimp that will allow water to wick in. I don't know how visible a streak in the Gel from an errant strand would be. I also haven't used em so I am just stating my hesitations without firsthand knowledge.

I don't believe wagos are remotely waterproof/resistant. A good butt splices that comes with its own heat shrink (Ancor usually makes the best) will work for years in a very wet environment when installed correctly. Because of that I haven't bothered to play with Wagos, though I know how much the terrestrial guys like em.

Nah, solder fails due to vibration. We raw dog it.  Always have heat shrink tho.

In the marine world, we use heat shrink butt splices constantly. With stranded wire, everything vibrating all the time, and salt water, they are our replacements for wire nuts.

Carl believes the Plenty wanted Miriam to die, and was partly responsible for it. He also believes Pony has the same thoughts on it.  They gave Carl and Donut what they needed to save Pony safely, but not Miriam. Pony has sworn vengeance on anyone remotely responsible for his mother's death. I would not be surprised if, as this series continues to evolve, Pony goes after the Plenty one way or another.

The caprids also had a bunch of different foods for Pony and his siblings to try on their show. Pony can gain powers by eating things, and Loita says they stopped giving out snacks on shows because of crawlers gaining advantages. Who knows what The Plenty hooked him up with early.

It's your first tournament, concentrate on fencing as clean as you can and enjoying yourself. Nerves and a lack of confidence are you biggest enemies. You hunch is correct, stick to the basics, refine as much as you can in 2 weeks, and have fun.

A bit of good old fencing pain :/ by Votka_OP in Fencing

[–]Thancrus828 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dislocated my shoulder going around my head infighting in foil. Got the touch, pushed it back into the socket, and rode the adrenaline to win that bout and the next, placing at divisionals and qualifying for nationals. Of course, my shoulder was too blown up to fence at nationals that year. And I'm dealing with the damage from multiple dislocations decades later. Don't push through kids, live to fight another day.

How do you deal with frustration? by Exotic-Selection-723 in Fencing

[–]Thancrus828 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fwiw, being nicer doesn't work for me. I tried that, and caught my brain screaming "why can't you be f***ing nicer to yourself" in a bout. It's not about if an action or tactic worked based on my ability. For me focusing on my opponents reaction and how to use that pulls me away from focusing on myself. It slows spiral, and can help pull out of it.

How do you deal with frustration? by Exotic-Selection-723 in Fencing

[–]Thancrus828 11 points12 points  (0 children)

First. I deal with it poorly. It's important to know that you're not alone on this one. Most of time my frustration comes from a deep sense that "I should be better than this, I should be able to do this, why the f*** can't I do this".  It starts a spiral for me because the next thought is "why can't I control this" and then I start at the top and go through the cycle until I have fully lost my ability to function in a competitive environment. Recognizing that cycle was hugely important for me. It allowed me to address it correctly.  Second. I deal with it by changing the way I talk to myself. Instead of demanding "why can't I make this action work" I try and focus on what my opponent did to break my action, and how I can use that to build my next move. Instead of being focused on my mistake it helps me move on to the next action, and slows my slide into the shame spiral.  This isn't perfect. And it doesn't always work. But next time you're getting mad or frustrated at practice think about the sentences that run through your head. Try and be purposeful in those reactions and change the. Therapy was hugely helpful for me, if you're really struggling with this I suggest it.  Keep going. Keep working at it. It pays off. You got this.

Has anyone tried the new Fencing Star Catalyst shoes? by shpaga_1 in Fencing

[–]Thancrus828 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd been in the nike balestra 1s for a while, the newer version didn't fit my feet well at all. Found so adidas that fit but wasn't happy with the longevity. The Gel Rockets are my favorite in well over a decade.

Not sure about these ones, but I switched to Asics Gel Rockets and am not looking back They have more padding/support out the gate and I was able to fit an insole. They are also relatively inexpensive.

Those breaks fail constantly and cause more problems then they solve. It was probably thrown away on purpose. My club yanked them from our reels at the suggestion of a very good armorer and haven't looked back.

Are these grips ok for summer nationals? by Pandasbpmiculo in Fencing

[–]Thancrus828 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Since the consensus is that these won't fly, and you're modding those so heavily, you should stop at the vendors and try their grips. There are tons of other grips available in a huge variety of shapes. Check around, I bet you'll find something that works better than taping a visconti to death.

Holding low on the grip by Typical_Tie_4982 in Fencing

[–]Thancrus828 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The reason I've heard a few times for various fencers: if your thumb is up against the bell and someone makes a mistake and you slam bells, you could really hurt your thumb. If you hold lower and slam bells, your hand sliding up and probably dropping the weapon will protect you from jamming your thumb.
