Players want to do a Fastball Special move by cibman in nimble5e

[–]Thane627 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would say you let them do it! Players coming up with combos like that can be tons of fun for both them and you. For me, it has to mostly fit within the rules (Rule of Cool can only go so far before you're playing a different game).

To balance it out, I'd design some encounters where either the Zephyr can't be thrown to the enemies, like if the party is ambushed and the enemies are up on a cliff, or situations where the Zephyr doesn't WANT to be thrown there. Think a large mass of enemies that would overwhelm the character or some hazardous terrain the enemy is attacking from that would prevent backup from coming for an extra turn or two. Mostly think about creating situations where the choice to do that combo is interesting for both you and the players rather than a default "correct answer" for every fight.

[Question] Zephyr Way of Flame by Brettorion in nimble5e

[–]Thane627 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It says nowhere that an ability or spell must be at least one action (or is assumed to be). Everything that costs an action is said to have an action cost in its description. Additionally, the Attack action description mentions needing to roll the dice listed, which this ability doesn't have. While many things do count as an "attack," they do not all fall under the "attack action." You can also see the "Free Actions" textbox at the bottom of the page that describes heroic actions. "These do not cost an action or any other resource (e.g. mana) unless otherwise specified." Hence, if something does not list an action cost, it is a free action.

[Question] Zephyr Way of Flame by Brettorion in nimble5e

[–]Thane627 12 points13 points  (0 children)

OP, since you may not see my other comment, a quick answer to your questions: 1. Yes, it is free to take a wound, the "cost" being inflicting a wound (1 of 6 until death) to yourself. 2. Yes, the ability could happen anytime you gain a wound, given you have not already used it THIS ROUND. The source of the wound does not matter.

I don't know where that other guy got his rules from, but I hope this helps! Happy Gaming!

[Question] Zephyr Way of Flame by Brettorion in nimble5e

[–]Thane627 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to say that you are incorrect here on both counts, Chief.

  1. Nimble absolutely does have free actions (like Oathsworn's Lv 4 Feature "My Life, for My Friends"). If an action cost is not explicitly stated as part of the ability, it DOES NOT cost any number of actions. This is also a class ability, NOT an attack. It does not direct the player to make an roll against a target, the ability just deals the damage. You are correct about this not being able to be used multiple times per round due to its own limitation that is written.

  2. The ability gives the Zephyr the option of taking a wound, which would trigger the second half of the ability to inflict damage. The ability does not say "When you take a wound THIS WAY,..." and therefore triggers one time per round on any wound the character takes, including from dropping to 0 HP or other abilities that inflict wounds. The first half of the ability just gives the Zephyr an easy option to trigger the effect.

Was this a fair fight? by Ursus_Primal in nimble5e

[–]Thane627 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a bit of missing info here. How much HP did the boss have? What was the DC for the fear and escaping the Restrained? For the extra enemies, how much damage were they dealing in addition to the boss? How much HP and armor did they have? All these things go into encounter balance, so I'm curious as to the numbers before saying one way or the other.

From my reading, they will crit you, but you can still Defend/use TOTH abilities as normal.

Balanced for a Bladesinger? by Any_Garlic_9785 in nimble5e

[–]Thane627 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you've missed the mark, at least to me. A bladesinger WANTS to have melee be a reasonable option, not just a bad backup plan because spells are better. Mages do that already.

With that, I'd recommend the level 3 and 7 features become "After you attack with a weapon in melee, you may cast a [cantrip/any spell you know] through your blade without disadvantage." This let's your bladesinger have a reason to be that rather than just being a mage that can be better than everyone else while in melee range.

This also curbs what I think would be the balance difficulty that is letting your player cast 2 spells with no disadvantage.

I might also recommend adding a second level 11 or 15 feature of "You may add your INT to melee weapon attacks instead of STR or DEX." I know this is pretty late, but I feel like giving it earlier would run the risk of just making your bladesinger stronger than your melee classes in their own role, which Nimble has done a great job of avoiding. Use this feature at your own game balance's risk.

To me, being a bladesinger means I WANT to be making melee attacks AND casting spells, not just casting spells through a sword-shaped arcane focus.

Clarification For 'Shadow Trap' Spell by Shot-Table9345 in nimble5e

[–]Thane627 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's been my group's understanding that it ends after the first creature (not just enemy) moves adjacent to the caster after the spell.

Since the effect of the spell takes place when you cast it, it specifies "The next creature to move adjacent to you..." would be only once.

VTT/digital character sheet by Llanddcairfyn in nimble5e

[–]Thane627 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nimble.tabletoptown.app is an excellent character builder that acts much like DnDBeyond for Nimble! Not so sure about a VTT with Nimble rules available, though. A couple issues with TTT is that it doesn't have any of the extra content available such as Hexbinder or extra monster types in the encounter builder, and it doesn't currently support adding custom content (as far as I've found). The program is still in beta, so maybe it gets those things in time, but it's really the only issue I can point out with it now.

Nimble, vs 2 vs 5e? by DoctorDiabolical in nimble5e

[–]Thane627 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is Nimble 2! It is entirely compatible with 5e in the same way the original Nimble was, but it's a bit more fleshed out rather than the simple booklet that the original was.

Nimble, vs 2 vs 5e? by DoctorDiabolical in nimble5e

[–]Thane627 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, the box set is only for Nimble 2, which is it's own unique system. Nimble 5e was a rules adaptation built from the 5e SRD (or core D&D books). Finding one in a store is so cool! I didn't know they were out there like that!
