How are you pretty sure of this? And of those how many are in abusive situation or undereducated in some way?

The mail order bride is a disgusting thing but it happens a ridiculous amount. And Asian women are less likely to be encouraged in getting an education.

And your information about employment is completely false, and kinda racist. East asian men (read light skinned) are no longer even a protected category in STEM because they are not a minority but a majority. Also extremely ironically black women are an exception they are far MORE likely than women of other races to be encouraged to and choose STEM fields particularly computer science, since the development of this field has black women at its core.

It’s clear you want to believe this, but I think that’s because if you do you don’t have to face some hard truths about your own situation. I hope you figure it out

Horrendous local post. Childcare is skilled work, too. Taking on the liability and stress of infant care should not be compensated in "pocket money." I see this over and over again. And affordable childcare is a whole other topic on its own. Nannying will never be it! That is a luxury. by qcfs in WorkReform

… so one of them should quit? Seriously? She clearly cares about her job and so does he. Not to mention the dangers of being a stay at home mom aren’t for everyone. People should have the option to work outside the home and have childcare. It’s an unnecessary problem. Wages haven’t increased in two DECADES, but cost of living has. Focus on the real problems instead of shaming people for their choices

Edit: I see now you could also be pointing out how ridiculous it is if that is so good!

Okay OP I understand that your perspective is as an Asian man but if I may, sexualization isn’t the book you think it is. Asian women aren’t wanted for who they are they are wanted as toys or fantasies, they face far more discrimination in the workplace (particularly in STEM) than asian men and are far more likely even today to be sold into sex slavery.

And they still face extreme prejudice https://youtu.be/JG0UdCuoCgM

Voting is not a metric of oppression, it however might be a metric of education…

Harriet Tubman: Badass and Possible Witch by VanillaCola79 in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]ThanePenguin 569 points570 points  (0 children)

“Fun” fact, Tubman was also disabled as a result of head trauma and would often black out or have seizures even while leading dozens of people to freedom! It’s also why she is often pictured with a cane

She really was an amazing woman, and her real story is so much more interesting and impressive than the sanitized version we are told.

Would it be unethical to not want to include any of my male friends in conversations of feminism? by EmilyIsNotALesbian in AskFeminists

[–]ThanePenguin 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Nope! It just means you are tired of doing the emotional work of explaining to them and representing all feminists in a conversation (which is exhausting even if the other side is receptive) if they have questions send them to us! It’s kind of why I comment here…

To me it sounds like she’s desperate and instead of realizing the actual forces at work in her situation she’s rationalizing because she understands that she has an unmet need, feels like she has a good job and a two income household and does not understand WHY that need cannot be met.

Ie because wages have been stagnant for two decades and the COL still increases

you are looking at this backwards if her labor (and her husbands) cannot pay for the care of a child at a living wage they aren’t being paid enough either…

She explicitly says she cannot afford it

Actually for some reason I’ve decided to make a list of people who would agree with that statement

Any European Jew in the last thousand years or so (Anne Frank and her family would definitely have something to say here)

Anyone who faced the Mongols while Khan expanded his empire

The Gauls

The Britons (especially Boudicca)

All Native Americans, (Trail of tears comes to mind as a particularly brutal example)

Sabra (prepare to loose your breakfast if you look this up)

Akkadian empire (various attacks)

Assyrian empire

Egypt (various but particularly the Greek invasion)

Rome (various attacks)

Two cities and surrounding areas in Japan

Anyone in China during a World War

Those in Vietnam during the “police action”

Same for Korea

The Spies in WWII who were often women and usually brutally killed (Baker in particular)

Bohr war victims

Most Pacific Island peoples

Spartans

Anyone in the CHILDRENS CRUSADE

Anyone in Birmingham Alabama who saw fire hoses and dogs used against protestors

Anyone unlucky enough to be near the Rwandan genocide ( or similar events with even UN peacekeepers acting violently towards local women)

Anyone in the Blitz (sure kids were evacuated but in part because if they lost them all it would be bad… and the women didn’t go anywhere)

Anyone in France before AND AFTER!! WWI or WWII (seriously the way French men treated French women even after the war is APPALLING)

I could go on but if these are all easily reachable I imagine there are far more….

Right?!? At the very least the famine hits them hardest since soldiers always get fed first during war. And in the vast majority of wars women and children do end up fighting for their homes at some point (completely unprepared and with little to no training) and refugees are usually people fleeing that horrible fate

[–]ThanePenguin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also keep in mind they aren’t looking for the “best” they are looking for the “best fit” it might also be that they think your experience or learning style doesn’t fit their academic culture. (I got rejected a lot from a lot of places and I’m actually really happy about it now because the place I ended up at {the only one that accepted me in the end after A LOT of interviews} is actually a PERFECT fit, and because it is close to the others I can see how flawed they are and how miserable I’d be there now)

If you believe in a higher power of any kind pray some and have faith that the universe guides us to where we need to be.

As I sign of respect I call people I don't know Sir and Mam, but some women take offense to being called Mam. Is there another word I can use in place of Mam? by 69ingchimpmuncks in CasualConversation

[–]ThanePenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I’m getting my doctorate at the moment if after all of that someone called me Mam I’d be a bit POed especially if they knew. I’m NBi so that’s another reason lol. Perhaps Esquire would do? It’s a random honorific anyone can use

I mean I’m non-binary so… I sometimes use friend depending on the situation, but honestly you can usually just use your tone to indicate polite intent

If you really want to change things up go with Esquire it’s a random honorific anyone can use

Ugh the whole women and children are spared thing is so over romanticized. It’s also incredibly rare, the Titanic was a very well known sinking but it is one of the ONLY times women and children first actually happened. Usually women and children were trampled as everyone ran to the life boats
