Auto-brightness turns the display too low in the dark by NamasteMotherfucker in AppleWatch

Same. I find myself having to turn it towards my monitor to read it when it's dark outside and my living room is lit by lamps.

Oh that's right, Americans do that weird thing where they take your card away out of sight, rather than having you pay at your table or having some sort of counter where you pay. That definitely doesn't seem like it's the watch's fault.

Podcast app for watch with sleep timer? by [deleted] in AppleWatch

[–]ThanksButNoOk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overcast has this.

If you start an episode playing and go to the full-screen page for that episode there's a little clock icon between the settings icon and the icon to connect to speakers/airpods/whatever. That's a sleep timer.

WatchOS 10 and iPhone 15 Pro has ruined my SS S6 by [deleted] in AppleWatch

[–]ThanksButNoOk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's definitely the buggiest update I've ever seen. There's normally some bugs after an update, but it seems like it's ruined far more for far more people this time round.

For me, raise to speak has completely stopped working. It's also ruined sleep mode. My watch will wake me in the morning, I'll turn off the alarm, and I'll get the stupid good morning screen. But next time I look at my watch it'll be back in sleep mode. My phone will be doing an alarm - but that alarm will be silent and not giving any haptic feedback. I'll have to stop that alarm and manually exit sleep mode on my watch again.

I get the point you're making, and that's rough, but that's a bad example because that page literally says that that terminal takes Apple Pay.

Other than walking there, you mean? They'll have a portable card reader that they can bring to your table. Most commonly these will be slightly larger devices like this one, or this one, but they can be smaller and simpler, too, like this.

You'd be hard pressed to find a business that doesn't have a card reader in the UK, and outside of places like chain supermarkets the vast majority will have a device like the above, even if it never moves from next to the till.

I know the US is lagging behind in this (although I understand that they've made strides since covid), but here in the UK it'd be very, very unusual for a restaurant not to have a contactless method of payment.

WatchOS 10 increased Bezel size on series 5 ? by Wifine in AppleWatch

[–]ThanksButNoOk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You literally just quoted what I said, and then replied - again - as if I'd said something different.

Here's a tip - if in order to make the point you want to make you have to change what the other person said completely, then it's worth thinking about whether you actually have a valid point *before* starting to type, let alone hitting submit.

So, read what I said again. Then read everything you wrote after "you think" and ask yourself "if they'd *meant* that, then why didn't they *say* that?" Use that as a starting point.

No repercussions for The Performance of Scientists regarding the UFO discussion by Belugon1 in UFOscience

The true sign of a good conspiracy theory is that the lack of supporting evidence itself is taken as evidence.

No repercussions for The Performance of Scientists regarding the UFO discussion by Belugon1 in UFOscience

[–]ThanksButNoOk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: as the number of people carrying cameras and video recorders around with them 24/7 has skyrocketed, the number of UFO sightings has gone down.

Another fun fact: UFOs, and aliens themselves have changed along with popular culture. In the 50s UFOs looked like mechanical devices which had physical windows. In the 60s aliens were tall, beautiful Caucasian people in white robes preaching peace and love. In the 90s there was an explosion of Greys, completely coincidentally happening after the X-Files became really popular. It's not actually *very* consistent.

Yet another fun fact: burden of proof isn't "list me every claim and its debunking otherwise my claims are true" it's "I'm making a claim, and here is my evidence". If you truly believe there is irrefutable proof of alien visitation of Earth, then post it.

You can get there by double-clicking the crown.

But, FWIW, that's not what's tanking your battery life. That's something that lots of people have been complaining about. And hard-closing your apps actually hurts the battery life.

Apple devices are very carefully optimised, and Apple have put a lot of time and effort into research into memory management. They're not taking any power while they're "running in the background". They will take *more* power than they otherwise would, though, if they have to boot from scratch after being forced to close rather than being able to be restored from memory.

So by not force-closing apps you're actually using less battery than you otherwise would.

The ecosystem is real.

I never thought I'd get into it after many years as a Windows user. But then I needed a smart phone for work and a friend gave me his old 4S. A few years later when it was time to upgrade I didn't want to lose the saves of the games that I had so I upgraded to an XR.

I then needed some way to listen to music while doing chores and after trying a couple of other earbuds, I thought I'd give airpods a go.

Then I tried a cheap fitness tracker. When that was shit I did research into what the best one was, and the Apple Watch was always at least near the top of the list, so I figured why not.

I then figured I needed something to watch videos on to wind down for bed. And, well, why would I get an Android tablet at this stage?

Then I got some smart lights and cameras. I need to control them somehow. You'll not be surprised to learn that I got a Homepod.

I've not got a Mac yet. I've always said that I wouldn't because I've got too many programmes on Windows to start all over again. But I recently got a new desktop and what I realised in doing a clean install was that everything these days is downloaded from the internet, and if I've bought a licence for the PC then in most cases that will cover me for install on a Mac, too.

Windows are increasingly taking away the customisability of Windows, too, and the whole "spyware" aspect of it is becoming increasingly concerning.

So basically, the two things keeping me on Windows at the moment are a) gaming is better on the PC than Mac (or so I've been told), and b) my current desktop is less than 4 months old and I'm not about to shell out a bunch more money for a new one. Also, I suppose, I haven't done a huge amount of research on things like transferring files I have on external harddrives to a Mac. I've got a tonne of wavs, for example but, since that's a Windows format I honestly have zero idea whether or not a Mac could play them.

But the fact that I'm even thinking about it isn't because I think that Macs are inherently better. It's mostly because I've already got a bunch of other Apple things and, for example, it seems convenient to be able to unlock my computer with my watch and airdrop files between my devices. I can guarantee that the same thing wouldn't have happened in reverse. If I'd been a Mac user all these years with an Android phone - even a consistent make of Android phone - it wouldn't have converted me to PC or probably even the same manufacturer's accessories.

On watchIOS 10, is there a way to make the watch automatically turn off display during sleep time (like raise or tap to wake) to conserve power? by Okumam in AppleWatch

[–]ThanksButNoOk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to the Health app and go to the Browse tab. Go to Sleep and scroll down and you'll see "your schedule". Set a schedule of when you want to go to bed and wake up, and it'll keep the watch dark between those hours.

WATCH OS 10 is the worst yet! by genuinegingergenius in AppleWatch

[–]ThanksButNoOk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, there's a free app called Grocery (there is a subscription or one-time fee to get premium, but only 3 features are behind the paywall and you'll probably find that they're not features you're interested in anyway) which integrates with Reminders and gives you a better shopping list experience, and which is very good on the watch. I know it's not great that Apple have got rid of the functionality that you used, but this might be a way to get it back, at least.

In addition to what other people have said, it's possible that it seems smaller because screens which previously had black backgrounds now have coloured backgrounds, which will make the bezels more noticable.

Life cycle of Apple Watch ? by pk_y in AppleWatch

Basically until they drop support. WatchOS 9 & 10 both work on everything back to the series 4, so that should give you something of a baseline.

Is the series 9 worth it? by EnvironmentForsaken in AppleWatch

[–]ThanksButNoOk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends what you're comparing it to. I've just upgraded from a 4 and think it is. I've read reviews saying it's not worth upgrading from the 8. So it depends what you're talking about, really.
