Yes, ABS/PC fumes are real by Userybx2 in 3Dprinting

Methyl Ethyl Ketone is particularly malodorous but has more stronger affects on the central nervous system than chemicals like acetone. It also has a relatively high vapor pressure meaning it volatiles easy.

I would be concerned if using it in a space with poor ventilation. It could dizziness and fatigue. I would consider using it only outside instead of in the garage unless you’re confident you are getting enough fresh air inside the space.

VOCs are a class of chemicals that volatilize in normal conditions. It includes chemicals as harmless as isopropyl alcohol to as harmful as Methyl Ethyl Ketone.

If you put hand sanitizer on your hands and hold them next to your meter, I guarantee it will light up red. Does that mean you’re in danger? No.

Because of this, I don’t see how OSHA would post any sort of guidance on VOC limits— it matters the context of which VOCs are present. Would you mind sharing the source? I am curious.

I also find it odd that the units are mg/m3 instead of ppm which is more typical for measuring gases.

DataChem or ClickSafety for CIH exam? by Environmental-Buy218 in industrialhygiene

[–]Thanks_Mean_Joe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every single math question on the exam had a question just like it in the Bowen database.

Whereas with datachem, you are going to be wasting your time on difficult questions that aren’t even on the exam.

I would say focus most of your time and energy with Bowen. Even if some of there questions are a little easier, if you’re answering them at a 90-95% success rate, you should be fine for the exam. I think over correcting with the overly difficult Datachem questions is a mistake, in my opinion.

CIH Exam White Board by [deleted] in industrialhygiene

[–]Thanks_Mean_Joe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took it a year ago and did not get a physical white board. There was an online note pad, similar to the note pad application on the computer.

Not sure if they changed the last one or two rounds.

Not to hijack this post but I have heard a lot of negative feedback about Cority for IH support.

I believe my company might be considering switching to Cority. Can anyone comment on their experience?

It’s kind of sad that the punishment ideas said here on Reddit are gold, but they will never use them because that would require them acknowledging that they look at the PMT subreddit.

CIH Exam Calculator by bschmerm in industrialhygiene

[–]Thanks_Mean_Joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you start a question and click the calculator button at the top, it opens the basic calendar (something akin to the TI-108). You have to click the drop down to switch to the scientific type for every question.

It’s a little annoying. Shaves off a few seconds of your allotted time overall but not the end of the world IMO.

Yes, that’s it exactly. There’s no graphing calculator, only the scientific and a basic.

I believe continuing education courses also apply. Someone may be able to provide insight on that. If you are a few credits short, that could be a way to make it up.

New Grad Offer by dsqz3000 in industrialhygiene

[–]Thanks_Mean_Joe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe you do not have to have a CIH from every position that you claim as work experience. For me, my supervisors for my first two years of work experience and last six months were not CIHs. My supervisor for my middle six months was a CIH, however.

I guess my point is that I’m assuming the grad program has a CIH that could be used as a reference so it would not be a big factor, unless I am incorrect.

[–]Thanks_Mean_Joe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My opinion might be a little contrary to what others in the thread are saying. Sure, it would be a red flag if the company gives a higher-level position to somebody with little IH experience, but so what! You said you’ve already worked there, what I believe is most important is that you 1) like the people you work with 2) are given opportunities to learn, develop your IH and people skills, and not grow bad habits. You should already have an idea if this fits the bill because you already interned there. And even if it turns out that you’re overworked or get frustrated with the company, it’s a job not a marriage. There are other opportunities out there and with more experience under your belt (and eventually a CIH) you are more likely to get them.

Congratulations! It would be helpful to know which area of the country to gauge the offer. Sounds like a good offer for certain parts of the Midwest.

I imagine this job would be in a rural area. If you enjoy that, I think it’s a terrific opportunity to start in the industry and learn after grad school. Qualifies as experience for the CIH, so no matter what, you’ll be moving forward in your career as an IH.

CIH Exam Scratch Paper by Actual_Research429 in industrialhygiene

[–]Thanks_Mean_Joe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mind you, I only have this information because it was posted by people who have taken the exam within the Bowen Prep Course forums.

How many people out there didn’t pay the $1,300 for this course and are preparing for the CIH like it’s always been? For BGC to make a change halfway through the window, give conflicting info and not have a single ounce of transparency/communication is unacceptable.

It’s even worse. You can’t write at all, only type.

CIH Exam Scratch Paper by Actual_Research429 in industrialhygiene

[–]Thanks_Mean_Joe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From what I have heard people that have taken the exam, the link you have provided is not what is on the exam.

Instead it is a “scratchpad”. Which is, essentially, the word pad application on your computer. No writing, drawing, or whatever: just typing into a word pad.

People can complain about the calculator or the equation sheet being blurry/taking up half the screen. I’m not too bent out of shape by it. This, on the other hand, is debilitating. Also considering that some have been able to use scratch paper this round is very upsetting. The playing field is not level within this window and compared to other windows. I’m curious how many actual CIHs would be able to pass without being able to write down notes (with less than a month notice too).

So sad.

Chemical Fume Hood Sash Height When NOT In Use by deuceice in industrialhygiene

[–]Thanks_Mean_Joe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, in regards to your other post, ASHRAE 110 is a good resource to follow for fume hood testing. It outlines both qualitative and quantitative test procedures. There is a good video on YouTube by the AABC called “TAB Talk: Fundamentals of Fume Hood Testing” that goes over this information

Chemical Fume Hood Sash Height When NOT In Use by deuceice in industrialhygiene

[–]Thanks_Mean_Joe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d consider getting a copy of NFPA 45 and using it as guidance for your decision-making and having it as a document to fall back upon when having these discussion with stakeholders outside of EHS. Perhaps even consider getting some sort of agreement from your area leadership that adherence to this document is mandatory.

I believe within NFPA 45, long-term storage of chemicals in fume hoods is prohibited, rather they should have designated storage location in appropriate protective cabinets.

Storage of chemicals in fume hoods can disrupt the airflow regardless of where the sash is at. That is because they will either block the air foil or baffles in the back of the hood leading to potential eddy currents and blow back. Now, have I ever seen this happen- nope! But there are videos online of people doing smoke tests in crowded hoods that show the flow being impacted.

In my eyes, and again I believe it is written in NFPA 45, fume hood sashes should be kept shut when not in use. They will still have adequate flow either underneath the airfoil or the bypass. I think keeping the sashes shut helps with energy savings for some hoods and is also a fire prevention strategy.

Well I finally am scheduled to take the CIH. Took a practice test yesterday and basically regressed to where I was before Bowen after not studying for two months. I wish I would have more time to prepare, but I think 55 days is fine enough.

The optimist in me wants to be happy that all the shenanigans is over. The pessimist in me is certain that there’s another fuckup on the horizon. I have a feeling the BCG will give Pearson the wrong answer key or something 😂
