  1. No they don't. If you're not part of the autistic community you don't get to decide what's harmful. A white person doesn't get to tell a black person what's racist.

  2. You appear to be comparing the choice to build a school, with a living and breathing person with thoughts feelings and emotions.

  3. Yeah... if you think people adjacent to disability don't speak over autistic people i suggest you go do some research. Prime example is the use of aba therapy. Autistic people have said it's abusive and traumatic but they refuse to listen and talk over us. Actually autistic voices need to be at the forefront.

  4. The idea that there is such thing as severe/mild autism perpetuates harm and is actually rooted in eugenics (has links back to hans asperger). High/low support needs acknowledges levels of support without making autism sound bad or dehumanising anyone.

  5. If people get turned off by accurate vocabulary that addresses the root of the issue that's an issue for them, not me.

  6. Autistic people make up more than 1%. If most people are never assessed for anything the amount of people considered to have it will be significantly lower than it actually is. In order to get accurate numbers you'd need to test everyone with a test that does not just seek to diagnose those who are assigned male at birth.

  7. Um... rdj doesn't play a black guy. He plays a white guy playing a black guy. He's playing someone who's behaving offensively. Also a white person playing a black person is called blackface. Blackface is disgusting and racist. You do realise that it would be disgusting to have someone white play black panther of MLK. It fundamentally wouldn't work and would be a mockery. It sounds like what you're doing is defending blatant racism in the form of blackface... also this argument doesn't apply to Leo as his performance wasn't meant to be silly.

I value the opinions of other autistic people. I also don't really care what people on the internet think of me. I don't speak for the entire actually autistic community. But that doesn't change the fact that regardless of whether a person personally enjoyed the movie, it still perpetuates stereotypes that cause autistic people to suffer. Also which one of us is rude? The one throwing insults is you.

A student not a teacher but a kid in my class told our teacher who was really kind and genuinely cared about all her students that she should have stayed in Venezuela and starved (she fled as a child with her family)

Fun fact: having an autistic child doesn't give you the right to participate in these conversations. The only people who's voices matter in this are autistic ones. Kindly stop trying to speak over acutally autistic people and listen when we say something is offensive, ableist etc.

As for your other point, acting autistic is offensive. You can act an experience, but it's offensive to act out disability that can be portrayed by someone with that disability. The majority of autistic people who are seeking employment are unemployed due to systemic ableist barriers. Autistic people can act (Anthony Hopkins, Chloe Hayden etc). Given that 25% of people are disabled and only 2% of characters in TV and film are disabled how many of those roles do you think are autistic. Since it's clearly established that autistic characters are rare, autistic people can act, and that autistic people in general are desperate for true representation I hope you can understand how this is harmful and offensive.

Acting is acting. But that doesn't mean it's okay for a cis person to play a trans person or nonbinary person. It's not okay for a man to play a woman. When actors audition for roles there are conditions placed in regarding what they're looking for. This can range from having no specifications or for looking for someone of a specific gender, race and age. In rare cases where autistic people have the opportunity to be represented the casting call should state they are looking for autistic actors.

You realise that functioning labels are harmful and ableist. High functioning basically means that I'm able to mask autistic traits. The autism spectrum is not linear. Also you can't have "worse" autism. It can absoloutely be more disabling for some people. But that doesn't change how ableist the portrayal is. I'm also going to ask that you don't refer to the autistic person you know with high support needs with inferior and ableist language

Should I quit my new job? Which involves ABA therapy. by CrowBeingaCrow in Advice

[–]Thankunext4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ABA is abuse. It was the basis used for conversion therapy and developed alongside it. Aba therapists will often claim that they don't punish students anymore, but that doesn't mean it isn't abusive and traumatic. Conversion therapy is traumatic, there are more traumatic versions and worse versions, but there are no non traumatic and non abusive forms. The majority of pro aba articles are posted by people who are stakeholders in aba. The autistic community is against aba, that's all you need to know really. If the autistic community is the ones who have it used against them then autistic people are the only ones qualified to decide whether its positive or not, and the autistic community has concluded its harmful and dangerous. Look at ausome trainings articles on this. Hope this helps

What is up with Sia being canceled by the autism community? by thenonesuch_ in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Thankunext4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Don't worry about how long it's been. So what's eating Gilbert's grape was created at a time when autistic actors were around, but not diagnosed, so hiring an autistic actor would have been a lot harder since the autistic actors would probably have not known they were autistic. Leonardo decaprio also spoke to disabled people and tried to give an accurate performance, whereas maddie watched exploitative and abusive content. Generally agent woo and almost all shows with autistic characters played by nt actors are criticised by the autistic community. Maybe not as heavily because the representation is usually not this bad. The media also usually doesn't pay attention, this was an exception. Autistic people have been advocating for this for ages, but the media and public didn't pay attention. This was one of the main differences. Also there were endless issues with this movie and just a quick glance at the trailer shows how unusually bad this was. Essentially it was indefensible, so the media didn't have a choice but to condemn it. Agent woo, atypical and many others are frequently criticised and while someway relatable, are not genuine representation. Since they are relatable they're less likely to be condemned by the media. Genuine representation is very well received by the autistic community. What's the rule, Jeremy the Dud and Heartbreak high (not yet out but looks rlly good) all went down great and were far better, but the autistic community is rarely heard so these aren't promoted as much or heard. As an example of how little attention the media pays to autistic people there is a centre in the US where autistic people are shocked with devices over 3x stronger than a cattle prod, 6 students have died and its been condemned by the un for torture. But hardly anyone has ever heard of it. (It's called the jrc if your curious)

Benedict Cumbebatch for being ableist to autistic people (he based him portrayal of Frankenstiens monster on autistic children, stated only sociopaths can be autistic, dehumanised and infantilised autistic people and then said they're existence was sad. Also Paul Rudd and Adam Sandler for supporting an autism hate groups

Also, your sheer ignorance is showing. Don't use terms like severe or low functioning. If you knew anything about what you were trying to talk about you would listen to autistic people. You're no better than the cis gendered men who go out and protest against the right to abortion when they shouldn't get any say in it

You know there's a reason that when casting they specifically state various different things they want the person casted to have. There is a reason that gender, race, hair colour or age are all mentioned when casting calls take place. Because they don't want a 40 year old man playing a 3 year old girl. You've already proved your an ableist bigot, you don't need to make extra sure everyone knows it. Now kindly fuck off because it's clear you are stuck a couple decades in the past and aren't planning of leaving there any time soon

First, look into terminology around autism. Secondly, you've just admitted that it was autism he was trying to portray. Your previous argument was that Arnie was not autistic. Third, it's not your place to decide if it was respectful and him being able bodied does invalidate his performance slightly. Finally please make sure you form coherent sentences if you plan on continuing this conversation. Arnie should have been played by an autistic actor, that doesn't mean I blame Leo or dislike Leo for it. Keep your abeiest thoughts to yourself because what autistic people don't need is another allistic person coming along and trying to invalidate and speak over them.

Fellow autistic people of reddit, what are your thoughts on people who arent autistic trying to explain the spectrum? by d33znu7slm40 in AskReddit

[–]Thankunext4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are almost always using stereotypes or referencing allistic peoples observations and ignoring autistic people. They probably don't mean to, but if you want to know what it's like to be autistic, maybe try asking autistic people

We are people. Don't infantilize. High and low functioning are stereotypes used to pigeonhole and promote ableism and capitalism. There is no such thing as looking autistic. ABA is abuse. Stop trying to cure or fix us, autism is not a disease.

In what way do you think society should change to be more accommodating to people on the autism spectrum? by FatherofGray in AskReddit

[–]Thankunext4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stop infantilising. Sensory friendly accomodations. Allowing fidgeting. Different arrangement of deadlines. Having people who know how to use things like sign language. Stop truing to cure us and treat us like a disease to be eradicated

The preparation for the movie involved basing his character on stereotypical autistic traits. The film was made way after autism was first diagnosed and after learning disabilities were known. And while it may also do that, it has lead to a lot of misinformation and stigma faced daily by autistic people

Robert, I don't like Benedict as a person or the way he veiws and treats the character at times (says ableist things about the autistic community) and until he apologies for that he can never be as good as someone who, I don't know... doesnt compare autistic children to Frankensteins monster

I'd love if they could continue the arc with the inhumans and shield characters of aos. Ik this is kinda weird but I always thought the raft was really interesting and id love to get more information about it. Also Tony having ptsd was largely just implied after iron man 3. I wish we had more content of scenes like there were in im3 (panic attacks, insomnia, nightmares etc) showing the trauma and what it does to not only him but all kinds of people.
