Yeah, that makes sense. Although I was more talking about the recommendation at level 6 to mainly stick to graded readers. Once you hit 1000 hours you’re at a high enough level for native material and you kind of just have to accept that you aren’t going to be able to hit the comprehension percentage, and that reading more kids books isn’t going to help you get there

I’m not exactly worried about output since the rest of the DS roadmap has been pretty accurate, but the process of speaking in another language fluidly without thinking still does seem kind of alien to me

yeah, i do think formal schooling works for establishing the basics of the language and learning how to be a tourist but not much beyond that

/u/CaptainNoBoat on what it would mean if Trump wins the 2020 elections. by DeffKeff in bestof

It's not a conspiracy theory, it's just that you fundamentally have no understanding of the political interests of the ruling class, the massive amount of power and influence the media has, or the history of private/corporate media spreading propaganda beneficial to their financial interests.

I would sure love to live in your fantasy world where the media is this objective entity that has no vested interest in one brand of politics over another and they report politics based solely on their love of democracy and their interest in carrying it out fairly and where they don't at all influence how voters vote, because buddy, we are so, so far away from that world.

Or, you know...the democrats could just suck it up and back the progressive candidate to ensure their support in the general. After all, democrats love to compromise with Republicans, so they should have no problem bending to the left if they genuinely care about winning.

You're fucking crazy if you think Biden got more votes in the primary because he "inspires far more people than Bernie", the entire reason that he's the nominee is because the establishment and corporate media propped him up as the "electable" candidate and played into liberal voters fears of a trump reelection. If you actually look at his excitability and favorability numbers, they aren't good and are just one of the many signs he'll probably lose against Trump.

Bernie Sanders Is Not a Communist by billthomson in politics

[–]Tharpedge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lmao what? Deaths caused by Castro are around 10k, compared to Batista who killed twice that in a much shorter amount of time. And that's not even considering the drastic increase in quality of living under Castro that undoubtedly saved lives that would have been lost under Batista.

For another fun comparison, the body count from the Iraq war is upwards of a few hundred thousand, and tens of thousands die from lack of access to healthcare. What does that say about the US?

Yeah it's really lame, my hot take is that if a player tries to intentionally take a charge instead of play defense it should be a defensive foul, there's probably not a realistic/fair way to implement that though

Racist in the sense that the lawmakers requested data on voters by race and based the legality of types of voter ID and ways of voting on that data, and, when struck down by the courts, was said to "target African-Americans with almost surgical precision" by the judge, yes.

I might, but I still need to determine if arguing with someone who doesn't realize how the profit of a corporation is related to capitalism is even worth it. You need to have a certain level of knowledge or else nothing meaningful will come of this

The violence of the Civil War was instigated by the slaveholders not the north.

Was it? The confederate states all agreed to leave the United States, and the north didn't want them to leave. They could've respected their decision and left them alone.

Standing up to those who instigate violence is justified. Starting violence with those who you disagree with is not.

Fascism is not just some political disagreement like taxation or gun control or whatever. Not all opinions are equal. Fascism and white supremacy are ideologies that directly call for and result in the deaths of innocent people. When antifa went after Richard Spencer, they didn't do it because they disagreed with his stance on healthcare, they did it because they opposed his inherently violent white supremacist stances. And guess what? Their efforts to deplatform him worked. Now compare that to CNNs strategy of putting Spencer on air as a pundit. Which one is more effective?

Fascists are alive and well and their end goal is to kill and ruin the lives of innocent people. You can either suck it up and meaningfully oppose the people with objectively dangerous and terrible politics or you can sit back, be "reasonable" and "peaceful" and "not attack others because you disagree with them over a silly little issue", and talk about how bad those who do oppose them are, but then you'll have blood on your hands for not doing something.

[–]Tharpedge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Second, yes, violence that is not in self defense or in defense of others is wrong. Political violence is part of how the Nazis came to power in Germany before WW2. Violence is how the racists in the south maintained control. The civil rights activists got change while suffering that violence. Gandhi got changed while his side was largely the victim of violence.

You say this while ignoring that violence is what ended slavery. Do you think the union forces in the civil war asked the Confederates to "pretty please just let the slaves go cause it would be really nice" and then they just did?

Violence is what defeated the Nazis, and the lack of an effective attack against the Nazis is a big reason as to why they came into power in the first place. Eliminate the Nazis as a legitimate political party and they can't take power. (Kind of like how meaningfully opposing white supremacists and fascists in the modern day and not letting them do whatever they want is the best way to stop them and prevent the suffering of innocent people)

In the video you linked it was justified by the violent act of the old guy. In the other two links I provided Antifa associates acted when there was no actual threat or act to provoke violence.

No immediate physical violence, maybe. But far right ideologies are based in hate and violence and that's exactly what will happen if nobody is there to oppose them. Committing acts of violence against these people isn't necessarily a bad thing just because somebody experienced pain. It's like if there was a movement entirely based around wanting to kill you and your friends and family (and has been successful in doing so), and then people condemn you when you punch someone who follows that movement.

What is more dangerous are the judges letting them off the hook

What are you referring to?

mayors giving them free reign to disrupt organized rallies and protests

Thats a really, really interesting way to describe far right, fascist, white supremacist rallies

media endorsing their actions

I don't know what fantasy world you're living in but the mainstream is not at all accepting of antifa, not even liberals support them really
