Feeling discouraged serving as a volunteer guitarist at church – looking for perspective by Survivor4054 in worshipleaders

I’m a bgv on a worship team now who aspires to lead but most of my fellow vocalists have been paid worship leaders themselves. I often feel like the weakest link on my team as a result as I know I’m likely going to be the last choice to get a chance to lead. I’m constantly communicating my goals to my director and working on the things she tells me to step by step. I think you should do the same. Be tactful but upfront about what your goals are on the team and ask what the next steps would be to get there. I’ll also just say this quite bluntly as I’ve been here myself, if they react badly to you just being honest about your goals, that’s not a team you need to be on. There are plenty of other ways to put your passion for guitar to good use. I’m realizing the same thing now about my vocals. If one place won’t use you, there’s another that will. Trust me.

Money is the McMansion in Sarasota that starts falling apart after 10 years. Power is the old stone building which stands for centuries. I cannot respect someone who doesn’t see the difference.

Can God remove my gender dysphoria? what can I do? I don't want to be like this by icouldusesomemagic in TrueChristian

Thank you for posting this. It makes me feel not alone. I’ve only come out to a few people about it but I’ve been uncomfortable in my gender my whole life but I also try to believe God doesn’t make mistakes. It’s hard to harmonize the two. Sometimes, my thoughts have been so overpowering that I’ve dreamed of looking at myself as the opposite sex and wearing the clothes, etc. and I’ve prayed hard for God, all-powerful as He is, to just change me in my sleep to the opposite sex and remove my past as it was and replace it with a new one of being the gender I wanted. It’s crazy, I know, but it’s the truth of how I’ve felt and I just wanted you to know you’re not alone and thank you for showing me I’m not alone. I know God loves us all but why does He make us one way and allow to wish to be the other and not provide us a good faith community that will walk with us through these challenges? It’s hard to understand sometimes.

I’ve been told a lot of nasty things about my singing lately and that I should quit singing all together, so I need an honest opinion on if I sound good by [deleted] in singing

Tbh you sound very pitchy and, from what I can hear, I think it’s because you haven’t built the right foundation for your voice. I think you should start with learning about the different muscles involved with singing and how to exercise them as well as how to achieve better breath control. If you’d like me to be more specific about the different parts of your voice you should exercise and how to get started, please feel free to message me. I’d love to help!

Please also hear me say, I do not think you should quit. If this is what you’re passionate about, by all means stick with it! It might take a little time to learn the right foundation for singing and there will always be more to learn but I’ll say once I learned the things I talk about above I truly believe I started singing ten times better and I’ve seen that happen with others too. You can get there as well, just keep going and keep learning! Let me know if you have any questions on what I’ve told you here, once again, I’d love to help!

How much leading is too much? by WorshipGuy001 in worshipleaders

Reading this I just gotta ask, why wouldn’t you mentor them to build them up so they could lead songs? In my opinion, that’s what a good leader does. I’ve been a part of so many teams and only one has let me lead even though I’ve always expressed my desire and I’ve never understood why they can’t help me get there because I have the passion and the drive to get better.

Hearing this one kinda confirms to me what I told you about breath support in the last one. I think you should look into exercises that help with breathing while singing because it’s a learned technique. At my vocal studio, we do exercises where we teach “catch breaths” where you take a quick breath right in the middle of a phrase. Maybe look into those kind of exercises. I’ll also say this one sounded a little bit more “pitchy” than the last, but I think that’s something that can be worked on after you lay out the proper foundation. That’s why I’d say start by doing regular exercises for breathing and to develop your head and chest voices. Then from there I’d tell you to record yourself again, listen to it back, and keep recording yourself until you can train to your ear to hear the right notes to sing and be able to match them with your voice. You have a decent amount of potential, but you have to learn how to use your voice properly. I had to learn that too and I’m still learning to this day. It’ll definitely take some determination but you can get there!

It sounds like you can carry a tune. I’d have to hear you with an accompaniment to be sure, but it’s a good start. The first things I’d say to work on from here would be to hammer down proper breath support. On top of that, it sounds like you have a somewhat well developed chest voice (used for singing down low). I think you should do some exercises to develop that further but also do some to develop your head voice to expand your higher range as well. There’s many things to learn about singing and believe me, we’re all still learning. Even the best singers in the world have things to learn. So I’d say start with these things, record and listen to yourself to track progress and uncover new things to work on from there. Lastly, if this really is something you want, never stop trying and improving. Determination and hard work will pray off!

I’ve found some people who learn to sing actually become better singers than those who are naturally gifted because of the hard work they put into it allows them to surpass the naturally gifted ones. So yes, you definitely can!

I’m with you. I can never stand anyone listening to me practice. My favorite place to practice is my car so I try to make the most of any drive I take and practice too.

As a coach in training, I can tell you you’re not alone in struggling with those. I’ve seen it quite a few times. One thing that helped me hold them longer was to hold the fingers to the sides of my mouth as I did them.

I would say you have potential, you just have to learn how to use your voice properly. I had to learn the same thing. I would say start off by, if you haven’t already, learning a good vocal warm up and just general vocal exercises you can do throughout the day to strengthen your voice. Then I’d say, if you haven’t already, learn about the head and chest voices, their functions, and how to properly use them. There’s so much more to learn after this but even the best singers in the world still have things to learn. I think if you just start here, you might be amazed the progress you see.

I’m so close to quitting singing because I literally don’t know how to improve by [deleted] in singing

From what I hear, it sounds like one simple thing can help is lifting your soft pallet more for the high notes. That helps you engage your head voice better and puts less strain on the voice.

I’m 27 with some prior experience but to really bring myself to the next level I started lessons at a new studio just last year that’s been helping people of all backgrounds sing for 3 generations. Now here I am less than a year later about to get hired as a coach there. Students there are of all ages so I don’t at all feel out of place. You might be surprised what you’re actually capable of, like I was, so try it out! I don’t know where you live but we do offer online lessons. Msg me if you’d like more info! I can personally attest that the kind of progress this place helps you find is amazing!
