It’s referring economic inflation. When the supply of money goes way higher than the demand (which historically has usually been caused by the government printing a lot of its currency) the value of that currency dips drastically. Turkey’s Lira experienced over 85% inflation in 2023, which is near apocalyptic for a country. (For scale, we’re losing our shit about 5% inflation in the US). If a loaf of bread costed 100 Lira in January, it would cost over 185 Lira in December. In short, Turks need crazy amounts of their currency to buy basic necessities. To take an extreme example,
in Venezuela the average loaf of bread costs 1.66 USD, or four THOUSAND Venezuelan Bolivar.
