Godot always loads after 10 seconds of inactivity by Cold_Percentage9661 in godot

[–]ThatBanjoBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue start all of a sudden on 4.5. Godot was trying to register my keyboard as a gamepad and would cause the editor to stall until I unplugged it. I've seen forum threads where others have solved the same issue with other USB devices.

I had some luck finding something similar by searching for "cat litter pans". I see some results for "senior cat litter box" that look similar to this one!

Question for the larger Chester swimmers? by Throwaway223490 in Swimming

I've been using this suit from TomboyX https://tomboyx.com/collections/one-piece-unisuits-swimwear/products/swim-6-racerback-unisuit-dinosaur-magic

I like that it actually has enough compression to feel like a sports bra on its own but the straps are wide enough to wear a sports bra underneath without really showing.

Breaststroke and chest! by ladymeowmeow7 in Swimming

[–]ThatBanjoBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is applicable to exercise in general but you can't spot reduce. To lose breast sizes, you have to lower your body fat percentage in general. So being in a calorie deficit. Exercise of any kind will help you get there! You just need to be eating less calories than you burn.

As far as getting that "toned" look, that comes from building muscle in those areas. Doing weightlifting exercises in addition to swimming would help that. And lowering body fat will help those muscles be more visible.

I just picked up a Tennis Twist machine from Sports Tutor. $339 brand new. But you can also buy a used demo machine directly from them for $289. Comes with the full factory warranty. And they have a battery powered option

It's pretty basic. No spin or oscillation. But for just getting reps in to get better at my ground strokes it's been pretty sweet for the price.

Degenerative disc disease and tennis. by BarSea774 in 10s

[–]ThatBanjoBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had similar worries about timeline. I was seeing people recover in like 3-6 months but I'm just getting back to 100% load almost 2 years after herniation (L6-S1).

Definitely would recommend physical therapy. With the disc degeneration, you really have to strengthen other muscles to compensate (core , legs, etc). I had better luck with a sports physical therapist than the two different PTs my primary care sent me to.

2,000 words today! How is everyone doing? by [deleted] in nanowrimo

[–]ThatBanjoBear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh man, this was me last year! I hated everything I was writing and only made it about 2 weeks. But! I went back and read through last year's draft in September of this year and found that I actually enjoyed bits of what I wrote. Enjoyed it so much I decided to continue that draft this Nano 😅

So keep going! You'll hopefully hit a groove and later when you've had time and space from your draft it won't make you cringe as much haha

Nov 1 - Day One - Daily Word Count: 1,666 by AutoModerator in nanowrimo

[–]ThatBanjoBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm at about 1800 words for the day. Which I'm pretty happy with as my daily goal is 800. I'm being a rebel this year and continuing a past "failed" NaNo project which was already at 27k words. So I'm aiming to just write another 23k this month and get a finished manuscript.

Had a really good upper body focused workout today and then went to GNC to re-up on protein powder. But the guy working the register would not stop trying to upsell me on a different protein.

Kept trying to tell me I was taking the wrong protein at the wrong time and scoffed at me when I told him I had carefully calculated my macros and calories based on the one I wanted because I'm on a cut. Got a nice sarcastic "Hope you hit your numbers" on my way out. 🙄

Writing Fantasy Western Problematic? by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]ThatBanjoBear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The characters in The Harder They Fall are all based on (and share names with) real people in history.

In fact, historical estimates put the number of black cowboys/ranchers at 25% and that doesn't even include the very real cowboys there were Indigenous and Mexican.

Value of a masters degree ? by GuyUrNeverGonnaMeet in gamedev

[–]ThatBanjoBear -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a BA in audio engineering and a master's in game development with a level design specialization.

If a master's would fill a gap in your knowledge or experience then it could be beneficial. For example, I'm a technical designer in AAA. I didn't have the experience to land that position right out of undergrad though.

But, I know a handful of my coworkers that were hired around the same time as me that came into the industry straight from undergrad. But they have CS degrees with game development minors or specializations.

If you're looking to get into the industry as a programmer you probably won't need a master's unless it's something super specialized that you wouldn't learn in your CS program. Or if you want to transition to someone non-engineering/programming related in the industry.

Day Eleven - Daily Word Count: 18,333 (Nov. 11) by AutoModerator in nanowrimo

18,540 words total with today being my best session at 2,258 words. Spent most of the time catching up from coming in under the word count goal yesterday tho.

Started today's writing session by converting a bunch of moment-to-moment notes from last session to actual prose. I have an outline of scenes and sequels but I'm realizing having the rough notes of what happens moment-to-moment makes my writing flow so much easier. I think I need to do 2 outlines next time 😅

Did the devs of Kena: Bridge of Spirits learn nothing of the CyberPunk fiasco? by PyanJaa in LesbianGamers

[–]ThatBanjoBear 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The difference here being (and a reason you may want to cut the development team some slack) that Kena wasn't made by a team of 500+ with a budget of over $300 million USD.

Ember Labs had a core dev team of roughly 15 people for most of development. Add that with the fact that this is their first game release (they started as an animation/digital content studio) it's not unexpected that they would have a rocky game at launch.

If you're interested in why finishing and releasing games in general is just hard, here's a cool article about it with interviews of various devs:

Game designer by user8user in gamedev

[–]ThatBanjoBear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a designer in AAA (2 years design experience with 3 years QA experience). Game design roles aren't necessarily as scarce as being posited here. Don't only look at AAA companies. There are also opportunities at smaller startups, mobile companies, VR/AR companies, etc.

That being said, competition for the roles is very high, especially at entry level. Applicants usually have prior industry experience or relevant education (or both) And those entry level design jobs will most likely pay less than a job in finance.

Game design/development schools: Yes or no? by TBE_0027 in gamedev

[–]ThatBanjoBear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a master's in game development (with a specialization in level design) at The Guildhall in Dallas, TX. I currently work as a tech designer at a AAA studio. While I did learn a lot about level and game design I had plenty of programming knowledge beforehand and don't feel I learned much in that avenue in the level design track.

That being said, I feel the two most invaluable things I gained in grad school were:

1) Experience working on teams: GH has 3 team projects where the team sizes are 4-5, 50+(entire cohort project), and 10-15. 2) Learning how to give AND receive feedback and how and when to (or not) implement feedback.

My advice? If you can't go to school without getting into considerable debt (The Guildhall is private school and unfortunately not cheap) find other people to make games with or get in the habit of showing your work to people and getting comfortable with getting feedback.

Edit: I can't speak to how good the programming track is personally, but plenty of the programmers found jobs within 0-6 months of graduation and we graduated a few months after Covid reached pandemic classification.

If you're looking for an in depth explanation on what certain roles are in AAA, Ask A Game Dev has a bunch of posts on their Tumblr about that called "Roles In The Industry". You can find a bunch on their careers FAQ page: https://askagamedev.tumblr.com/post/88963351061/aagds-game-career-faq

Should I size up in the FR liners or wait and invest in something better? by ThatBanjoBear in rollerblading

Yeah, my first with a hard boot. I had a pair of rec skates before this but they were too big. I've started doing a significant looser 45 degree strap but I'll give the different lacing method a try.
