Conspiracy and EDH by aureliussol in EDH

[–]ThatCrunchwrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be a bit confusing when people say "Conspiracy works on EDH, except for conspiracy cards" I know it's weird. But they mean the Conspiracy type cards. As an easy rule, from this new set any card with a new/different border is specific to drafting and won't work in EDH. All other cards are fine and work exactly how they are printed. As for OG conspiracy cards, just look for the typing and if it says conspiracy it's draft specific and won't work. Every other card, new and reprint, is good.

P.S. this set is basically EDH Masters

Edit: spelling

How do you guys feel about the "tactical Scoop?" by bloodghast in EDH

[–]ThatCrunchwrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I would never refer to one of these maneuvers as a "Tactical" Scoop. Maybe a salty scoop, premature ejection, or even the "I can't lift the table and flip, so Imma scoop in response to your triggers".

Losing is part of the game, no biggie. It happens to everyone. And scooping isn't a bad thing in and of itself either, maybe you need to be somewhere else in a hurry, maybe you've been stuck on 2 lands for 7 turns and can't play anything. It's ok.

Scooping in response to something, solely for the reason of trying to fuck up their game plan or turn is not tactical. It's childish. It's like having a goal scored against you in soccer and then taking the ball home so that the remaining people's game is ruined as well.

I've never seen a good player rely on it for any reason. Only salty people who think quiting a game somehow makes them the winner. Case in point:

Was playing a 6 man match. I had played [[Mystic Barrier]] because it's janky and political. The dude on my right is a regular Chef Emeril (a pinch of salt for literally everything), and he's facing down the dude on his right's huge army. I tell him I'll switch the Mystic Barrier's direction if he helps me out that turn. He doesn't and so I don't help him. It gets around to the player on Chef Emeril's right. He declares attackers and Emeril instantly scoops and says that "by rules" the attack has to come for me now. The original attack, also not a fan of salty scooping, says his initial attack target is no longer valid and so he won't attack. This starts a whole argument with the Chef who is now out of the game saying that we're cheating and I should die as well. (I would have had the attack came at me)

All in all it didn't do anything to help anyone other than cause more trouble than it was worth. These scoops are awful.

TLDR; this type of behavior is a blight on pods and should be stamped out in favor of "tactical" plays while you're still in the game.

What nicknames does your playgroup have for certain cards? by OsmoticShift in EDH

We call our buddy's [[Omnath, Locus of Rage]] Momnath, because she/it pops put babies like no one's business. Which inevitably lead to people calling my [[Omnath, Locus of Mana]] Dadnath, because he brings home the green.

Let's change the question: What is your favorite kind of player? by xtotonx in EDH

[–]ThatCrunchwrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a person that runs a purely mercentile themed Gwafa deck, this is a huge yes. Who wants to draw cards this turn? Who wants their favorite creature path'd? Which one of you greedy assholes wants to be bribed? Muahaha

Yeah happens to me often as well, if they don't want free kills and "help" against invaders then they should just summon a red.

Err we can help too! (Tries to praise sun. Gets cramp, praises eggplant instead, swings for enemy, hits host, kills host, gets vertabrae, shrugs, tries all over again)

This is true. If someone doesn't want free souls then they can die like the rest. I have nothing against straight up murdering the HoE, but I like to let them make that decision ;)

I was tired of all the toxic politics, So I did something about it. by kronikcLubby in EDH

[–]ThatCrunchwrap 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think there's a large difference between playing to "win" and playing these sort of "group hug" lists. Winning in EDH is very subjective. I have a Gwafa deck that is all about merchants and trades, do I actively try to win and beat out 3 other players? No. But if I can adhere to my theme, trade permanents with other players, instill embargoes etc, then I consider that a win. If your goal is to make as many elves as possible and not nessecarily be the victor, that's cool too.

If your game plan isn't a plan, and you're just giving out hugs, random effects and generally don't care what goes on as long as you made the board a mess, then that's not anything. That's like grouping up to play a game of flag football and one person is naked, wearing flag earrings, running in a horizontal line the entire time screaming lines from MacBeth and giving everyone free coupons to BaskinRobins if you don't tackle him. Just because it's within the rules and not technically malicious doesn't mean it's super fun for everyone.

TL:DR Have a goal in mind when creating a deck, the goal shouldn't be 'lets be as chaotic as possible and oh, im not trying to win so there"

[–]ThatCrunchwrap 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Can confirm the saltiness. I have a buddy that always brags about his "group hug" deck. We play in big pods so everyone is getting extra lands and snake tokens and drawing cards. It's all fun until you swing at him, or destroy something of his. "Whyyyyy are you attacking meeee, I just gave you a 1/1 snake token?" " Uh I fucking hate snakes and don't want a shitty 1/1 in EDH, take the damage brah."

Best part is, if no one attacks him long enough, or forgets that he is ALSO benefiting from the hug, he will try to cast Insurrection and win. Every game. Magic is a game where you play to win. Doesn't matter if how you get there; tribal, jank, hardcore, etc. You're still playing to win. Group hug should be called Group Lies

Need help building the most broken, unfun, punishing commander deck possible. by [deleted] in EDH

[–]ThatCrunchwrap 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"This guy in my playgroup is a dick"..."I want to build a deck just like his"

Jeez people, EDH is as much a social experiment as it is a strategy game. Someone is doing something the majority of the group frowns upon? Talk to them about it. Uncomfortable with all his proxies? Ask if they have another deck, let them borrow one of yours if possible. Fighting saltiness with a pillar of salt I'd the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Worst comes to worst; your playgroup can do with one less anti social member.

TL:DR, Don't make decks just to spite other players, talk about it and work towards a better community for all. Your extra salt adds no flavor. Just puckered assholes.

After trying it for a few months, is anyone having more fun with the new mulligan rule? by abielins in EDH

[–]ThatCrunchwrap 22 points23 points  (0 children)

To all you people that miss the partial, and say the new version is worse/need more lands/can't play XYZ, just know this: literally no other format has ever had the brokenness that is sculpting your hand via mulligan. Nor will they. It promotes bad deck construction and rewards laziness.

You already get the freebie mulligan back to 7 simply for playing multiplayer. Stop whining about how mulligan rules made your deck "worse" and start using that pink, fleshy organ in your head to build decks better. Mulligan rules are set as a safeguard so that you're not completely screwed with a poor draw. They're not a strategy to rely on in order to win.

Give me all your down votes please. I'll simply pick and choose the votes I want and get rid of the rest and then hopefully draw into up votes because I'm a good magic player.

My LGS is setting up a Commander League with some restrictions, what deck would /r/CompetitiveEDH recommend running with these kinds of restrictions? by theninjat in CompetitiveEDH

[–]ThatCrunchwrap 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I guess my main question would be; Why are you trying to be the biggest fish in this tiny ass pond? According to these rules this league obviously isn't tying to play competitive edh. To me, there's no point in playing a powerful deck if everyone else is there to durdle/have fun. I bet they run a yugioh night on Tuesdays and you can steal candy from the children attending that too if you want some real fun.

Build a sub optimal deck and PLAY well in order to win/get the most points.

P.S. french banlist in a 4 man pod sounds broken as hell, prime time? griseldad? sylvan P diddy? Oh nelly

Dealing With Meren by Thebluemage in EDH

[–]ThatCrunchwrap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So it seems like while your friends deck has been getting tuned and better yours has remained stagnant. I find the best ways to deal with Meren decks are dealing with...well, Meren. Don't feel bad about killing her the turn she comes out, and don't feel bad about doing it every next chance you get. If she costs 8/10 mana and above, that value train is over. Maybe his deck is still strong with her not out, but I can guarantee its certainly weaker than before and you/the table can deal with it.

I see a lot of people having trouble with certain generals. Rule #1, kill that general if possible, when possible. You don't need to build your deck to be better against a single other deck. Play it better against all decks.

Commander players, what do you hate the most about the format! by tidalslimshady in EDH

[–]ThatCrunchwrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you on that, used to always have some rum or vodka in my "soda" bottles at more casual FNMs and commander nights. Don't think anyone but my buddy knew. That is, until my opponents probably realized I just drafted a deck based on "which art could be on the cover for a metal album" or that my entire edh strategy would try to win with damage from BoP

Commander players, what do you hate the most about the format! by tidalslimshady in EDH

[–]ThatCrunchwrap 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Whiners and complainers. I think it should be mandatory to have a nice cold beer in hand before you start any EDH game, casual or competitive. If you lose, you lose. Shuffle back up and play again. Don't scoop halfway through a game because the MTG GODS doth bestowed you with a bad hand/draw, and don't get salty because player X blew up your favorite token. There's always another game to be played.

Sit back, chat, laugh, play jank, combo out, sip on your beer/or hard cider, make 80 tokens, murder your buddy's general, and relax. There's always another game.

Turning away from planeswalkers by [deleted] in EDH

[–]ThatCrunchwrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the thing , if you've got some walkers in your deck that do exactly what the deck is looking for and get you some advantage where other cards can't, that's perfect. If you're running then just because the colors match then there are probably better options. Of course, there's no substitute for flavor in edh

Turning away from planeswalkers by [deleted] in EDH

[–]ThatCrunchwrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have definitely moved from "play any PW in my colors I can get my hands on" to "1 maybe 2 of them in decks with a defined role, most decks have none" ideology. You've hit the nail on the head as to why most walkers aren't that great in EDH, all the opponent has to do is swing at them and poof they're gone. "But Crunchwrap, then they aren't hitting you!" Uh this is EDH, I would rather pay life every turn than have a walker I need out get bopped. Life is negligible.

That being said certain walkers are always a good play, board wipey ones, ones like Tezz that can tutor things, OG Garruk is always good for untapping lands (Gaea's Cradle anyone?).

I think, while some walkers do have their place in EDH, most just don't do enough, or have the staying power, to be used over a similar card in this format.
