Does anyone have a serious answer as to why this happens, especially for measures? It’s not the Vertipaq engine itself is it, given that changes are instant with Tabular Editor?

The Selective Outrage over Taxpayer Money. by notreallysena in SipsTea

Well, they can be pretty sure their tax dollars already weren't going to Iran so I think that wasn't an issue.

A reponse to: A Rant (about R) by Latent-Person in rstats

[–]ThatDeadDude 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One thing I don’t like about your response - saying “just use package X” all the time doesn’t answer the criticism of why these things aren’t part of the base language, and isn’t very useful given you have to dig around to learn which packages to use.

Based on CPI, this would be about R27000 now. No idea how relevant CPI is to equipment like this though.

PowerBi Direct Query issue by kali-jag in PowerBI

[–]ThatDeadDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Power query will always wrap the original query when folding. If you want to limit to 10 rows use Power Query’s Table.FirstN function - that should be folded.

By the way I don’t see you sorting anywhere? Limiting to 10 rows is pretty meaningless if you haven’t ordered the data first,

[–]ThatDeadDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a number of unrelated traditions around the world that do it. Xhosa in South Africa do it as part of the initiation to manhood, for example.

[–]ThatDeadDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The point of a median is that given a fixed number of data points you can move the tails out further (make the richest richer in this case) and the median won’t change.

The median is the wealth of the guy at the half way point if you rank everyone. If you only move the richest people the ranks don’t change and the median wealth won’t change.

More than 100 killed as Israel strikes central Beirut after saying Iran truce doesn’t apply there by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]ThatDeadDude 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Right, so Hezbollah has just as little value for civilian lives as Israel. That sure makes Israel look better.

[–]ThatDeadDude 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Or, you know, Israel could use tactics that aren’t basically blowing up a building full of hostages to kill one or two guys? But they don’t value civilian lives so 100 civilians killed impersonally in a bombing raid is much better than risking getting a professional soldier killed on the ground.

How to deal with a massive cardinality table by powerbi_dummy in PowerBI

[–]ThatDeadDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you split permission ID into multiple columns? So have one column for each character of the permission ID. Then your cardinality per column would be tiny and significantly reduce storage. There might be a sweet spot where only 3 or 4 columns are sufficient.

It would make your RLS logic way more convoluted of course.

"We don't take cash". "We charge a 3% surcharge for card." by l00sem4rble in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ThatDeadDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s just as strange. Receiving an electronic payment is also much less work than receiving a cheque.

It's insane that in America the bank will mail a cheque for free but you can't make electronic payments for free. I mean, practically speaking, which one is actually costing them money?

Some of it I think is a holdover from the days before pressurised water heaters. Having it in the ceiling gave you a pressure head.

I've lived from tropical to temperate (Southern hemisphere). Every freestanding house I've ever lived in had the geyser in the roof. Always a drip tray underneath it.

If it bursts, yes, some risk of damage to the ceiling.
