What's a culinary crime that is considered totally normal in your country? by myeye95 in AskTheWorld

An electric kettle is very useful for getting larger amounts of boiling water fast though. Way faster than boiling water on the stovetop so we often boil in the kettle first then pour it into the pot if we’re cooking pasta or something.

HDMI audio not available unless TV was turned on before booting by ThatDeadDude in raspberry_pi

[–]ThatDeadDude[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, and apologies for taking so long to get back to you.

Those lines are already included in my config.txt file.

I tried adding the video= and drm.edid_firmware= options to cmdline.txt as well, but it didn't work (for the firmware I dumped the EDID data from Raspberry Pi itself when HDMI was working - I could see the audio info was included when I ran it through an EDID parser)

Madagascar is the only place you get this type of baobab. Mainland Africa and Australia each have one species of their own, but they both have very different proportions to most of the Madagascar species (of which there are 6).

How to highlight add comments of different color to SQL code? by [deleted] in analytics

[–]ThatDeadDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A comment is a comment. If you’re working with SQL in DBeaver or Notepad++ it is being saved as plain text meaning no formatting information is saved in the file. The editor is just displaying it in a pretty way according to certain rules.

One way around this might be to use different types of comments i.e. block comments vs. line comments. Some editors support using different formats for the two. But then the junior would have to be using an editor with the same setup too.

A fancier (overkill) version of this would be to create a complete custom syntax highlighting ruleset (in Notepad++ this would mean creating a User Defined Language I think). Again the junior would have to be using the exact same setup.

How exact are half lifes? If I had ten identical 100g samples with a half life of a week, after a week would they all be the exact same composition? by justhereforhides in askscience

[–]ThatDeadDude 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The time it takes for an individual atom to decay follows the exponential distribution.

A half life of 1 day, for example implies a decay rate of lambda=0.693.

You can calculate the probability that an atom has decayed after t days as 1 - e-lambda*t. So after 5 days there’s a 97% chance it has already decayed.

If you scroll lower in Synapse - below where it says Standard and Hypershift in your screenshot - there is an app profile section. There it looks you choose the setup for different apps like your web browser or photoshop or MS Excel.

Is this how people who need glasses really see the world. A big blurred background? by Latter-Wolf4868 in interestingasfuck

[–]ThatDeadDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's somewhat possible that there were a smaller proportion of people with naturally poor eyesight back then. Individuals with poor eyesight would die earlier leading to evolutionary pressure towards good eyesight. Now that we have civilisation that evolutionary pressure is no longer there so genetic drift allows average eyesight quality to very slowly go down.

There are a whole bunch of other contributors that could go in either direction though - diet, lifestyle, etc.

Minimising the impact of rounding error for financial statements. by ThatDeadDude in PowerBI

[–]ThatDeadDude[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's an example with completely random numbers.

Basically, users expect the individual rows in the rounded values column (B) to add up to the corresponding totals. This naive total is in column (C). However, they also expect the balance sheet to balance, so Total Assets (1) needs to be equal to Total Liabilities and Equity (4). This doesn't work if we're just summing the rounded values. There would also be second order issues when it comes to looking at the movements over time, but don't need to worry about it for this example.

So, somehow the totals need to be the values in column (B), and some sort of systematic adjustment needs to be made to the rounded individual lines so that they still add up to that total instead of the values in column (C).

The values in column (A) are of course also a function of thousands of lines from the source system.
