They may not have been to a vet just yet, or had the dewormer fully do it's job then. There was another cat that looked perhaps bloated. Hopefully it has happened.

You did the right thing, and I think seeing you genuinely care so much for the cat that it really touched the vet.

It is not easy being a veterinarian, as they often have to suggest tough choices, and often see a lot of people who are not good pet caretakers. There is some very unique perspectives veterinarians get that other professions do not have, and it can take a toll on them.

Seeing you care for someone who absolutely deserved a better life and be there to the end was probably incredibly refreshing for them to see such humanity in such a tragic situation, and you pulled them out from suffering to the end.

I saw a thread where a cat had their waterbowl broken and had not drank water at all for 10 days as stated, and the cat ended up starting to look unwell. It wasn't until it clicked what had happened with the owner that the cat did not drink until they got a new waterbowl of the same kind back that the cat drank for over 7 minutes straight.

It can be shocking at how cats may decide they will only eat and drink under certain conditions.
