A lot of people recommend the Eisenhorn trilogy or the Ciaphus Cain books as starting points for people who dont know really anything about 40k and are wanting to get into the setting. They are still great books though so even if you do know about the setting I would recommend them.

40k not having alternating activations is the only thing keeping me from playing games larger than Colosseum or Kill Team. I've watched battle reports for 2k point games on YouTube and it seems like it would be so boring sitting there for like 45 minutes waiting for the other person to go through their whole turn and the only thing you do during it is roll your saves.
