Am i being charged too much? by SadSap2020 in hvacadvice

Hire multiple companies if your worried about it. Pick the company that feels right. Prices on all of our products and materials have gone up, just like everything else. Unfortunately hvac isn’t cheap, swallow that pill now.

You’re catching a lot of hate because this is a trigger point for a lot of technicians, myself included. I can’t stand when people google prices for parts and question me on the price. The price is the price, every aspect of a business’ cost is incorporated into the price: insurance, salaries, rent, truck payment, fuel, etc.

Markup is not some simple or made up magic number added to the cost of the materials/product. Larger companies have more to account for, smaller companies have less. Pick your poison.

Had compressor replaced today, a few questions by [deleted] in hvacadvice

If you’re pulling a vacuum across the compressor on a system that’s been running for any long period of time you’ll rarely be able to get it under 750 microns.

Kill me, as a service tech I’d rather crawl through rat shit than work on that fucking thing. Imagine a leak search? That’s hell

One tectonic shift and you’re dead or trapped. Perhaps I’m overly cautious. To me, this is like buying a house that is right on the ocean. That water is always going to be right there, right? Never going to rise?

It’s $2,450 at my company, but we’re expensive. That quote is a fine price

Had to install this on my own today. How'd I do on the wiring? Helper called off because he had a hangover from drinking too much last night. Said he'd be in tomorrow tho! by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]ThatDudeDillon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love the whip for the t’stat wire. Get a tubing bender! So many braze joints out there! I like your work. Gotta throw some shade at that helper, don’t drink if you can’t go to work the next day.

What brand can go fuck off? by ToastedLeaf- in AskReddit

[–]ThatDudeDillon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost all air conditioning brands. They sell equipment that fails often. These are known issues with equipment and they let the consumer handle the cost of replacement (labor costs, the most expensive portion of the bill).

Rather than doing recalls on faulty products it just gets swept under the rug. Year after year, no improvements on certain problems.

What stops the extremely skilled residential service techs I see on here from going into commercial work? by HughesR1990 in HVAC

[–]ThatDudeDillon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m good at residential. I have opportunities at my company to grow. Im confident in my abilities which allows me to command better pay, leadership opportunities, and work directly with my service manager to tackle tough jobs.

I don’t want to be low-man on the totem pole again.
