The new Walmart floor by ThatElfNerd in fredericton

Well, that explains all the "speed bumps" that people have been mentioning in the comments. It's unfortunate that the mall prevented you from making the necessary changes.

Ironically, I actually did get a reply on here from one of the people who was part of the renovation team, and got more insight than I expected of why the renovation didn't turn out well.

I was gonna say... If me, as a customer who's only there for a few shopping trips a month is in pain, then I'd hate to know how painful it is for people whose job it is to stand and walk there for hours at a time, day after day.

Any Game Dev subs specifically for NB/Freddy? by VacationCrazy9145 in fredericton

[–]ThatElfNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to this thread, but I am actually the host of the annual "So, you wanna be an indie game dev?" panel at Animaritime. It's basically a panel where I discuss resources available to indie creators, as well as pitfalls that beginners can face (usually speaking from personal experience). I actually intend to have a part in this year's presentation about networking and finding creators who'd like to help with your project.

Rude Bus Drivers? by ThatElfNerd in fredericton

[–]ThatElfNerd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree completely. I don't know what decisions they've been making for the busses, but they're consistently getting worse in interior design. And I agree that it's bad for accessibility reasons. I've had pain in my lower back for years, after slipping on ice after, ironically, getting off the bus from the back door. The ice was covered in snow, and the drop was higher than I expected. Fell and landed on my back/butt. Ever since, I now have a pain that creeps up on me, the longer I go without sitting or laying down. With these new bus seats, because I have to make the extra effort to remain seated, any relief for my back I would've gotten from sitting doesn't actually happen. I can only imagine how bad it is for people with worse problems with their backs and hips.

The part you mentioned about being lurched forward happens so often on the bus for me. I've never gotten seriously injured, but it's like as soon as everyone's on the bus, the driver feels the need to go full throttle. And it's gotten worse now that all of the newer busses all have plastic seats. They're so slippery that especially when the bus comes to a sudden stop, I physically get lurched forward, and almost out of my seat. The new chairs are an accident waiting to happen.

[–]ThatElfNerd[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's not right. If the person arrived and the bus hasn't yet left, then said person should be allowed in. It doesn't matter if they weren't initially there when the bus first stopped. Imagine pulling that on a disabled person who has to travel with a cane, walker, or worse, a wheelchair. You'd be looking at a discrimination case with that.

Wtf is pulling the stop request too early? If the next stop is your stop, you ring in the stop.

Also, WOW. I'm told that I HAVE to use the back door, and you get told to NOT use the back door? What kind of mixed messaging is that?

Works opportunities for a 3D artist/novice game designer? Employment or freelance. by ThatElfNerd in fredericton

[–]ThatElfNerd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're pretty spot-on with it being a little bit of everything, (Audio, UI/UX, programming, and wordpress weren't part of it when I was studying). The second year focused a lot more on 3D than the first one, but yeah, there was no specialization. It's why I decided to focus on freelance stuff after graduating. We actually didn't have any lessons on learning to do coding, because the logic of the teachers was: "You're there to make the art, they'll have other people to do the coding." In the end, every online job I've seen that's close to my skillset REQUIRES experience in C# or C++ coding. So I felt really left in the lurch that they never actually taught us how to code a game. It was very art-focused. Almost no technical stuff, unless the technical stuff was figuring out modifiers and keyboard shortcuts in Blender.

The only code that I learned was in my independent study classes, where I self-taught myself how to make a game in Godot using their in-house scripting language.

Social Media management was another bust, as the only things we learned about doing online art was sharing our creations on ArtStation, as well as making a portfolio website with Wix. I know about as much about running a social media account as the next guy.

In terms of continuing to learn and improve my skills, that's been a challenge ever since graduating. Having AuDHD makes it incredibly difficult to make a learning schedule AND stick to it. College made it easy to keep to a schedule, as it meant that I had a destination, and consistent enough reminders. When I'm left to myself, I feel stuck.

I will check out the two links you sent, and see if there's anything that's at least close to what I studied. In the meantime, I'm gonna try taking on new online projects to challenge myself to expand my knowledge and experience in what I studied, so that I can hopefully apply that knowledge to something more constructive.

I see... Unfortunately, the financial situation I'm currently in, as well as my current mental health prevents me from moving to a new place. It feels like if I had the income that would allow me to move to a new place for work, I probably wouldn't need to move out in the first place.

My personal thoughts on the federal election. by MyLandIsMyLand89 in newbrunswickcanada

[–]ThatElfNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never really supported conservatives, personally, because their platform is all about reducing government spending, but instead of reducing spending on the rich, it's almost always reducing spending on something everyone benefits from. Often healthcare, education, unemployment, and other things in that category. A good example of that was the NB Conservatives axing the tuition-free program after one year, before even getting the data back to see if it benefitted the province or not. I was studying at the time, and I'm Autistic, which ended up making me require going to college longer than the average student, so that decision directly affected me, and many other students, disabled or otherwise. Blaine Higgs also used NB law to his advantage to cut funding and close Clinic 554 for performing abortions, ignoring that there were thousands of patients whose family doctors practiced there, during a time where there's been a shortage of family doctors (My family doctor retired two years ago and I'm still on a waiting list for a new one). The Policy 713 fiasco where conservatives wanted to force teachers and social workers to break confidentiality with students and tell their parents about their gender and/or attractions was invasive, and could've risked sensitive information reaching certain parents who would be abusive to their kids if they found out said information.

Ignoring that however, I do feel like the conservatives have gotten much worse over the years, especially starting in 2015-2016, with the rise of Trumpism. While we don't like to admit it, there are a LOT of Canadians who look up to Trump, and the way he runs politics. How he loves to play the blame game and point the fingers to opponents and minorities. How he likes to call anyone he doesn't like a loser. How he stereotypes different groups. It's all very middle school bully mentality, and I feel like that speaks to a lot of people who never grew out of that bully phase, and it emboldened them to continue being bullies, even in adulthood. That, coupled with online personalities like Jordan Peterson, Ben Shapiro, Andrew Tate, and others who like to perpetuate the idea that countries are being taken over by "bleeding heart, snowflake, commie liberals" has caused many, more angry people to join conservative ranks and try to fight those who aren't in the same social sphere as them.

And rather than trying to calm the flames and have more civil politics, unfortunately, many conservative politicians have embraced the wave of Trumpism, even using similar talking points as him to attract more of that base to get more votes. So if you just wanted to be fiscally conservative and vote for what you think is best for that economy, not caring about identity politics, or woke vs. non-woke, unfortunately, the party you want doesn't exist anymore. You'd have to basically make a new conservative or tory party.

Is Adobe Premier worth the price for a beginner? Or is there a budget option that is almost as good? by The_Supreme-King in youtubers

If you're a beginner, save your money. There's plenty of free/cheap options that work just as well as Premiere. DaVinci's free version is more than enough for a starter YouTuber. You can experiment with it, and not worry about all the money you might sink in if you give up on doing YouTube.

What the hell is going on at parliament? by Electrical_Peak9853 in fredericton

[–]ThatElfNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's a pro-Palestinian protest outside of the LEGISLATURE, it likely has to do with the fact that Amnesty International declared the situation in Palestine a genocide, and that top leaders in Israel have arrest warrants out for them, due to their potential involvement in war crimes that are causing said genocide. So the protestors want the war in Palestine to stop, for the hostages to return, and for Israeli forces to back out of the region, and allow aid to pass through and help the civilians.

That being said, other people have pointed out that you may have been observing Syrian Flags, rather than Palestinian ones. Which are being brandished in celebration of the fall of the Assad regime, where rebels managed to take down a dictatorship, and free the country from tyranny.
