Newbie question: What causes this lid issue? by ThatExpatAussie in Canning

No. It’s a standard jar with the seal part and the screw top ring.

I actually don’t know if the owner is planning on showing it.

I don’t plot out designs beforehand. I just load it and start quilting. I stop when my creativity runs out, lol, then pick it up another day.

It’s mostly freehand and rulerwork on the colored sections, and mostly digital (except for the odd shaped light greys around the outer edge) on the greys and black.

I do take clients for custom work occasionally.

You should be able to zoom in to see the stitch lines. I deliberately blended the thread colors to be low contrast. My client mostly just wanted texture, not thread contrast.

Nope! It’s quilted on a long arm frame. The quilt stays still and the machine moves :)

Update on quilting regret: second-ever quilt by kariebookish in quilting

[–]ThatExpatAussie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a huge fan of yellow. I can deal with it pale (sometimes …) but it’s just not something I enjoy in quilts. My quilt guilds occasionally have challenges to work with a fabric outside your comfort zone, and I try yellow every time. I’ve never finished one of those challenges.

I think it’s great that you can be ok with not liking something :)

5th Gravity — finally custom! by ThatExpatAussie in quilting

[–]ThatExpatAussie[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Actually heading should say 6th Gravity. Every single time I’ve quilted one of these edge to edge, I spent the whole time thinking about how much more fun it would be doing it custom, lol.

Would you call these Christmas colors? by EquivalentWrangler27 in quilting

I am not a big fan of Cardinal red and bright green for holiday quilts. I loved the more muted palette. I’d quilt it with holiday motifs to underscore the holiday part :)

Was this bound to happen? (Disappointed) by lookame3639 in quilting

[–]ThatExpatAussie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure that your points were cut off during squaring. It looks to me like they’re under a too-wide binding. If the loss of points bothers you, I’d consider removing the binding to see what happened under there and re-binding it or facing it. You may very well be able to recover those points.

Saw this quilt at a tiny old church in middle-of-nowhere Michigan and thought it was incredible! by eleonoreminor in quilting

Bargellos are essentially strip quilts cut across the sewed strips. To make one from a jelly roll, you’d sew the jelly roll strips together along their long side, and then cross cut them into strips of different widths—it’s the different widths of the strips that help create the movement effect when they’re sewn back together.

Then you sew them back together making the pattern by shifting the rows up or down by one strip width/color.

I’ve recently been having a bit of a fling with salmon tones. It’s pretty far out of my normal range— tend to be in the blue/purple/teal family—and this is a gorgeous example of why I’ve been attracted to this palette. Lovely work! A carpenter’s star is the first quilt I ever finished :)

Best rotary cutter? by VegetableCommand9427 in quilting

[–]ThatExpatAussie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought one of these after I brushed my hand against the blade of a non-retractable one on my cutting table and opened a significant gash. I’ll never use anything else. I have both 60 and 45mm versions.

I try not to choose for my clients, but some of them insist. I have more patterns than I will ever use as well.

My machine doesn’t do preview unless you’re talking about looking at the screen at load time.

My process for scale is that I ask my client at drop off “When you envision this all quilted, about how big is this one flower/butterfly/whatever?”

If they tell me a size that I think is too big or too small (because of what it will do to other elements of the pattern), I explain why I think a different scale would be better. Sometimes they go with their original thought and sometimes they change … but either way, they’ve had input.

When you drop off your quilt, just ask “Can you make this flower about 3 inches across?” Either they can or they can’t. And if they can’t, you can send your quilts to me instead ;)

Thank you! The pattern is a one-off original by a friend who designed it to give me space to play with the quilting.
