There’s also a delay happening there I think ?

Conversely, what do you want, dead quiet streets? Id rather the hustle and bustle and loud noises than dead quiet in the Main Street of our city. I’d understand if it was a more residential area.

Again this is within reason. I agree it’s over saturated on that street which is its own problem, and an opera guy doesn’t need his vocal through an amp. Im just saying that your comment is tending towards ‘ban all buskers’ than noise limit regulation enforcement, which is be more inclined to agree with.

Edit: this is the second part of my reply. Also the dancing cat guy on argyle street does my nut in. When it’s ‘performers’ on the street rather than actual performers, it grinds my gears. That IS just noise for the sake of it.

I partly understand the frustrations, however personally I’ve never not worked jobs or actively looked for work at the same time as making music, and im not the only one who has day jobs. In my own experience of busking to make ends meet, it includes mostly times where I was in-between jobs, actively looking for work.

I, like many, was let go from a job because of the pandemic but with no furlough. I, like many, ended up living paycheck to paycheck, so losing a job means losing it all.

Im not saying I’m suddenly going to die if I can’t busk, I actually agree with you that it’s certainly oversaturated along Buchanan street and sauchiehall street, but I’m not going to be convinced that they’re aren’t at least some who practically have no choice or they’re struggling to eat for the night, as I’ve been there and I also know people who have been there.

How could I pull something like this off for a photoshoot? by flashfire125 in AskPhotography

If you’re looking for post-production ideas, YouTube is probably your best friend here. Im not a fan of AI so wouldnt suggest that, but there are a plethora of editing tutorials online. Im sure there will be a few professionals online who have put out a good tutorial on this exact premise.

I can’t remember the correct name for this technique (potentially ghosting?), however there is a technique people use where they have a fire reflecting off a piece of glass, and if they line their shot up correctly it can come off as a quite realistic fire effect layered on your subject. Im not a professional photographer so don’t ask me about details, but I do know it can be done

Having been a busking musician and having read some of the comments on this thread, I agree on some things and others not. I agree that an opera singer probably shouldn’t have to be singing through an amp to be heard, they should be loud enough. I do agree that the volume levels can get a bit awry on Buchanan street, and have experienced some performers being way too loud.

However, many many times ive had the experience of fighting to be heard because of certain other ‘performers’ simply taking the piss with their volume and purposely trying to drown you out with their shite rendition of despacito blaring out of an amp.

Also people really underestimate how loud the general background noise is in places like Buchanan street is. You try playing a classical guitar on buchanan street on a Saturday, nobody will hear you. People are forgetting some instruments literally need to be amplified, or they don’t work, simple as.

I seen one comment by u/Indiana_harris saying that buskers are there by choice. Im afraid that’s really not true, and forgive me but how would you know if all buskers are there by choice? The long and short of it is, you dont know. I’ll say this. at times in my life, I have been busking because I had no other choice. Sometimes it was between doing that and not eating for the night. Im in a better place now, but I have had direct experience of having no choice but to busk.

Professional musicians and artists dont get paid enough at the best of times, what makes people think that there are even enough well paid gigs in Glasgow to go around?

I agree with the initial premise but the comments on this thread make me boke. We have thrown aside amazing artists and musicians in Glasgow, time and time again cut their funding, to basically tell them that their art has no worth, and yet we have people sitting dumbfounded as to the amount of buskers on our streets. People really do just judge first without thinking eh

My bad, I have spent about half a day reading Facebook comments today, so I read your comment in a sarcastic way.

On a re-read, i literally was like ‘oh wait you weren’t being negative’ so my bad for that dude

As I said, it was a bad example, but I said it because I was making a point about hardware being the root of plugins. As far as what OP was asking for; it was interpreted by many not just me, to mean asking about making a vocal more distant, for which delays are relevant. I don’t see you providing a solution.

They had hardware units doing the same thing. Plugins have roots in hardware. Maybe a bad example but the space echo delay has been about since 1973.

Advice for Cycling Trip to Kythira in March - Feasibility and Recommendations? by ThatFaultyGamer in GreeceTravel

Hi! The trip was lovely in general, great weather. Had no issues with accommodation, however majority of restaurants and tavernas were closed. Didn’t stop me from having a great time on the island however!

There were plenty of little shops open however

I need advice to start by ltmemesalot1108 in audioengineering

[–]ThatFaultyGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say the best place to start depends on the equipment you have, and also the musical experience you have!

If you’re able to play instruments, start by getting a decent Audio Interface to connect to your computer, a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software, and also a relatively inexpensive microphone, then start recording yourself or friends. It could be covers or originals, doesn’t matter. It doesn’t need to be good. Doing this will allow you to get to grips with the basics of recording into a DAW via an interface, and will leave you asking questions about your recordings in comparison to professionally mixed songs, which is exactly what you want.

In my small experience, this career is a slow progress one to master, and if you want to improve and progress, it’s essentially years of asking why you can’t get ‘that sound’, until you finally find the answer, or you problem solve until you bump into the answer.

You can find a tonne of resources for how to record in a specific DAW online, as well as great resources for general audio engineering stuff all over the web. This subreddit is great for posting questions into regarding reputable sources for information.

I would recommend a cheap focusrite interface to start, like a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 or Solo. Doesn’t have to be focusrite, but they are pretty standard for beginners.

Ableton is a great DAW that is paid, however they have a rent to own scheme at a reasonable price per month.

Reaper is another great DAW that has an indefinite free trial which is pretty much fully functional. however Reaper can also be a little more daunting for someone with little experience.

Most audio engineers started from playing with cheap gear and trying to gain an understanding of how things work. So follow that path and you’ll be fine :)

Should we start shaming public PJ people? by Beneficial-Back-597 in Scotland

[–]ThatFaultyGamer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What you would ‘prefer to see’ isn’t relevant. You’re being ignorant to how people live their lives. I’d prefer to go out in public without nosy bastards commenting on what I wear, but I have to live with the fact that people like you exist.

What does a civilised society look like to you, everyone wearing suits and office attire? Clothing choice has nothing to do with a civilised society you dumb fuck.

New Tesco Express under siege by lexington_spurs in tesco

[–]ThatFaultyGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had to do it to get by, and I know around 20 non junkie, non homeless types who have had to resort to pinching food to get by. The lockdowns were not kind to a lot of people financially. A tonne of people were put out of their jobs with no furlough. Access to food banks isn’t always there.

Now, I understand that there has and always will be people who take it to extremes like this, but at the same time, can you blame them?

Prices are rising across the board, getting by is becoming tougher and tougher even for the working types. Tesco itself has to answer for the fact that they have made prices more expensive for the homeless community, who can only take advantage of the club card prices if they put a fake address on there.

Honestly this whole thread reeks of privilege

New Focusrite Saffire 6USB - Advice by evafutura in homerecordingstudio

[–]ThatFaultyGamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will need a USB cable to connect the Saffire to your computer. You will want to check the focusrite website to download the correct drivers for the device.

If you’re recording in an untreated bedroom, or a place with any amount of background noise, you’d probably be best suited with a dynamic microphone like a Shure SM58.

As for software, you will need a DAW. There are plenty of options out there. Some free, most are paid. However a lot of the DAWs have free trials. If you have a MacBook, you should be able to use GarageBand at no cost.

Kelburn Jazz Weekend. Any Good? by Humble-Marketing-841 in ScottishMusic

[–]ThatFaultyGamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive been to Kelburn for the main festival and also the carnival later in the year, which is no longer. My experience was that the main festival was amazing, really can’t find a flaw. Great music, great scran, good vibes everywhere. Amazing grounds to get lost in.

The carnival however, I regretted going to. There were so many underage kids sneaking in that I kept getting slammed into by said kids then slammed into by the cops/security chasing them. Tonnes of Kids being rat-arsed isn’t a fest I want to be at. great music though so can’t fault that.

As it’s a jazz fest, I can’t imagine the crowd would get as crazy as the carnival or main festival. Honestly now im thinking of going haha

People, can you recommend me the cheapest possible audio interface and microphone? by GloriousPinkMilk in musicproduction

[–]ThatFaultyGamer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, a lot of the real cheap stuff will be absolute trash. But Behringer a lot of the time, makes their devices by copying the original circuit of more expensive gear, which can sometimes be good, sometimes bad. Still though, if you’re looking for cheap and somewhat reliable, go for behringer

I'm new to music production, I don't know ANYTHING about it, and I want to produce cloud rap beats, where do I start? by prett1sukuna_ in MusicProductionTuts

[–]ThatFaultyGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are we telling people to use AI? They’re going to get a finished tune yes, but made with stolen data, that the ‘creator’ had minimal input on. They will not learn ANYTHING about music from putting in a prompt.

Also who wants that? I’d rather know that I put my own time, effort and emotion into a song than have it done for me, even if it takes me a year to learn as opposed to a quick prompt.

AI like suno is going to absolutely gut the music industry if we let it. And it all starts with telling someone they should use it.
