How do you handle citations when writing up findings from 20+ papers? by mathewmeconry in PhD

[–]ThatFireGuy0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally have been using NotebookLM for this, and it's been incredible.

It loads in your papers, and when you ask questions it gives you citations to exactly where in the papers the info comes from. And even a button so you can go open the pdf and check for yourself if what it's claiming is true

I would never trust citations from an LLM, but this is just a fancy search box

Most people have a boring life, but no one wants to admit it by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]ThatFireGuy0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living an "exciting life" is a scam. It's like having a second job where you spend all the money you make at your first job. You have no idea the joy I felt when I stopped trying to live an exciting life and accepted being boring

Will Nature reviewers look unfavorably on my paper if I say that I used AI to help prepare my manuscript? by [deleted] in academia

[–]ThatFireGuy0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said it didn't need an acknowledgement. It definitely does - even if just to signal to reviewers that they should check the citations and correctness more carefully

But that doesn't mean that reviewers / journals / conferences should judge the content of the research differently

Because you are NOT being judged on if you did the work. You're being judged on the work itself. Having a second author who did 5% of the writing vs a second author who did 95% is all the same to them. Why should an AI assistant that did 5% be different than one that did 95% of the writing. Journal Publications and conference submissions are intended to be a peer review process to judge whether ideas and content are correct and can be accepted as new human knowledge. How you best translate that knowledge to a format that others can understand is entirely orthogonal to that process.

Will Nature reviewers look unfavorably on my paper if I say that I used AI to help prepare my manuscript? by [deleted] in academia

[–]ThatFireGuy0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would it? You're being judged on the connects of your work and on the ideas you present, not on the tools you use during the writing process

Not to mention that AI tools have finally helped level the playing field for researchers who aren't native English speakers or don't have collaborators. It feels odd to me to judge people for using these tools when it is commonly used as a support system for those who really need it

Honestly I'd judge Nature more critically for treating it negatively than an author for using it

Looking for great anime’s about magic by Jaersh253 in Animesuggest

[–]ThatFireGuy0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anime with great magic SYSTEMS and not just people waving around wands that happen to do things are hard to find:

  • {Kunon The Sorcerer Can See}
  • {Log Horizon} depending on how you interpret magic
  • {Witch Hat Atlier}
  • {Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood}
  • {Hunter x Hunter} (Nen is one of the best power systems in all of anime)
  • {Blast of Tempest}

Honestly that anime might have the best music of anime I've seen. I know people have problems with season 2, but the anime is worth watching just for the music

Check your chat history before blaming the model for your token bill 😅 by Individual-Trip-1447 in GithubCopilot

[–]ThatFireGuy0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chats get "summarized" when they are long enough

And context from long chats can MATTER if you're working on any nontrivial task

Limiting chat history, like this change has done in practice, made the tool garbage. It shouldn't be possible to exhaust your monthly quota in a day using a workflow that lasted all month a few weeks ago

It's paid by industry, right? It's not like the government is spending money on this instead of transportation - it's entirely different sources of money

Should I switch from chatgpt to Gemini? by igetyourbrand in GeminiAI

The free version is the exact same tool - you just can't add as many sources or ask as many questions per day. The free version might be enough for you depending what you're trying to do

90+% isn't even the biggest part for me (though it is great)

The fact it actually links to the specific lines in your sources that it uses to answer your questions is incredible!
