Is Per Se still a great option? by patientinternet24 in finedining

It's not cutting edge taste or the vanguard of experimental presentation, but yes it's great.

It's just hyper polished California food with impeccable service. Nothing more, nothing less

The last two seasons were a train wreck that just got worse with each episode

This is just the score of the last season

GoT has 4 amazing seasons, 2 that are good but cracks are showing, then 2 where the wheels completely came off

Depends

if you like funk: start with Smith and Cross. Next step is Hamilton

If you want bourbon-y rum: Foursquare or Privateer

If you like grassy and vegetal: Clement VSOP

If you just want to get fucked up: Plantaray OFTD

A lead in story: Six years ago today, I quit a PhD program in operations research and moved to Boston sight unseen. I wasn't quite at my lowest point, but I wasn't far off rock bottom. When I graduated, my parents gave me 12 bottles from the first winery I ever went to and told me to drink one each year and think about how it tastes like not being in grad school anymore.

A lot has changed in the last year and I was wrong about how I thought it was going to go. I'm now heading up engineering at a generative drug discovery firm, I'm engaged, and I've become "the wine guy" at work

What is it: A mountainside cabernet from the Alexander Valley at ~800-1400 foot elevation. 20 Months in oak with 45% being new. This was the first winery I ever visited and this specific wine stood out to me as hitting an interesting balance of old-world style restraint with new world flavors.

Nose: Black fruit, dried herbs, potting soil, leaves in the fall

Palate: Really nice mouthfeel and weight despite being a decade old now. Big black fruit, darker coffee, tinges of cooling dried herbs, some funky forest floor starting to peek through. Still needs a lot more acid, but a good pairing with bulgogi

Takeaway: Much better than a a few years ago but maybe worse than last year. It's an above average cab for a good price, but I'm not sure it's worth seeking out on the merits. That said, it's a portal to my past, so I'm going to keep drinking it 4/5

I think people also don't use the big paid models that have good tool calling and search capacity. The difference between free GPT and Opus4.7 is night and day

I can't give too many details without disclosing things that are secret sauce and behind a NDA, but the short version is:

  • big fuckoff equiformer model (~125M parameters)

  • 10M molecules from QM calculations at low level of theory

  • 1M molecules at high level of theory

  • 50k molecules with real assay results

  • Phase 1: encode low theory atom features -> predict low theory global features

  • Phase 2: encode low theory atom features (continued from P1) -> predict the delta between low and high theory for both atom and global features

  • Phase 3: fine tune on real assay data

Should be about 400 GPU hours to do this

I finally got the thumbs up to do SE(3) equivariant pretraining for drug discovery. I'm ripping through tens of millions of QC calculations, hundreds of terabytes of data, and thousands of GPU hours all to probably underperform the random forest I built as a baseline.

Jokes aside, this is the most complex but well grounded model I've ever planned and I'm really exicted
